The victory lifted the Cameron name to five overall individual county triumphs, joining the four straight older sister Alex Cameron claimed from 2010-13. Throw in state crowns from Alex in 2012 and Samantha in 2015 and a region gold medal from Samantha in 2016, and the Dunwoody siblings teamed up for eight overall postseason wins. The Lady Wildcats also captured three state team titles in 2012, 2014 and 2015 during the Cameron family run of excellence. A second consecutive state title in girls tennis served as the major highlight among many, as the Bulldogs ranked among the local elite in almost every category while winning the award for the second time. Chamblee also put together stellar state qualifying team efforts in boys cross country, girls cross country, volleyball, softball, baseball, boys soccer, girls soccer and boys tennis. Add in another county team championships in boys swimming and a school record for single season victories in baseball and the term of allsports was truly put on full display in 2017-18. CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY DeKalb County boasts a long and proud history in the sport of cross country, ranking among the state elite almost from the inception of the sport on the high school level 56 years ago. State competition was initiated on an Open Event level only for the boys starting in the fall of 1953, with North Fulton capturing team honors for the first of two straight years. The Open Event classification continued through 1964, as Druid Hills claimed consecutive team titles in 1957 and 1958 to lead the way among local entrants. A new format was instituted in 1965, featuring two divisions. That field was then expanded to three divisions starting in 1967 and running through the 1969 campaign. DeKalb County realized two more championships in this period, as Tucker topped the Division II field in 1965 and Lakeside began a string of nearly a decade of domination by capturing the Division I top prize in 1969. The Georgia High School Association finally officially sanctioned cross country as a state championship sport in 1970, and DeKalb County immediately flexed its muscles in that first season. Lakeside s boys won the first of four state Class AAA crowns over a six-year period that fall, while Shamrock also outlasted the field to snare top honors on the AA level. Local schools soared to two more state championships two years later in 1972, with Lakeside again sitting at the top of the AAA field and Lithonia grabbing the top prize in a combined A and B classification draw. Walker was runner-up to Lakeside in the AAA battle in 1972, as all-star senior Ricky Watson won the second of his two consecutive individual state trophies. Longtime head coach Eddie Roberts would go on to guide Lakeside to two more AAA titles in 1973 and 1975, with only Dunwoody preventing a four-peat while taking the top AAA finish in 1974. Tony Dipaola and Mark Thompson served as two of many individual driving forces during this period of Viking domination in the early 1970s. Several new faces began popping up on the state championship trophy list starting in 1977, as Avondale, behind two-time winner Chase Van Valkenburg, walked away with its lone top prize as the AA boy s winner that fall. Towers joined Lakeside, Lithonia, Dunwoody and Avondale on the state title list by finishing at the top of the AAA draw for the first and only time in 1980. The most dominating local state run of all, however, began in the fall of 1981, with Gordon snaring the AAA crown for the first of what would eventually prove to be five consecutive years through the 1985 campaign. Chamblee, meanwhile, became DeKalb County s seventh boy s state champion in 1986, walking away with the AAA title while ending Gordon s rule at five years. Gordon s James Flack, Chamblee s Chad Newton and Lakeside s Scott Griffith ranked among many other individual standouts during that period in helping their respective teams push for state honors. Lakeside nearly returned to the top of the state field for the first time in 25 years in 2000, finishing only two points behind Collins Hill in a brilliant runner-up showing in the AAAAA race. All-world junior Joe Thorne, however, did leave little doubt on the individual side, easily storming to the line first in a blistering time of 15:40.35. Thorne repeated as state champion in 2001, winning in an equally sizzling 15:49. Southwest DeKalb senior Phillip Burks captured the 2005 AAAA boy s battle in the splendid time of 16:21, while senior Nabil Hamid of Druid Hills grabbed the AAA title in 2008 in 15:50 and junior Leonel Ayala of Cross Keys snared the AA crown in 2009 in 16:22 and 2010 in 16:18. Clarkston added to the team championship list with three straight victorious efforts in AAAAA in 2014, 2015 and 2016, while Lakeside junior Davis Stockwell captured the boys AAAAAA individual state crown in 16:34 in 2014. The Georgia High School Association first officially sanctioned the girls state meet in 1975, with North Cobb (AAA, AA) and Berry Academy (A, B) snaring the top team prizes in that initial battle. Peachtree gave DeKalb County its first girl s state title in the fall of 1979, outlasting a loaded field to capture top honors on the AAAA level. Chamblee joined the championship parade two years later, racing to the head of the pack in snaring the AAA team prize in 1981. Gordon and Dunwoody produced DeKalb County s fourth and fifth girl s state title with victorious efforts in the AAA race in 1982 and AAAAA battle in 2012 respectively. Dunwoody netted two more crowns in AAAAA in 2014 and 2015. Shamrock s Celeste Baker, Tucker s Tracey Harrell, Chamblee s Stacie Reich, Alison Danford and Emily Reese, Dunwoody s Jeanne Hendrickson and Lakeside s Rebecca Mullen have served as some of the top individual stars. Reese won her fourth straight individual state title in 2007, snaring the AAA prize in 17:56. Lakeside s Meghan Wetterhall won the AAAA race with a super 19:12 clocking in 2008. Dunwoody s Alex Cameron prevailed in 19:50 on the AAAAA level in 2012. Younger sister Samantha Cameron added a second state championship to the family name, taking AAAAA honors for the Lady Wildcats with a 20:26 clocking in 2015. 3

2017 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON IN REVIEW Cross country season in 2017 ended without a state team championship from a DeKalb County entrant for the first time in four years and only the second occasion in the last six campaigns overall. The level of success for local squads, however, continued to run at a strong pace, as two boys teams placed in the top four at state and two girls entrants cracked the top 10. Clarkston led the way once again on the boys front, as coach Wesley Etienne s Angoras walked away with third place in the final AAAAA standings after claiming top honors the three previous seasons. Three runners finished in the top 20 on the individual end, as the Angoras finished with 165 points to trail only champion McIntosh (72) and runner-up Starr s Mill (122). Junior Rukundo Uwimana led the way for Clarkston while taking 13th in 17:32, followed by juniors Ngabo Daniel and Mathurin Allawai in 18th (17:36) and 20th (17:42) respectively. Juniors Firomsa Ibrahim (44th; 18:11) and Abdoul Tolo (73rd; 18:34) completed the top five that help make up the final Angora team tally. Lakeside put the finishes touches to a memorable season by securing fourth place in the final AAAAAAA team results with 205 points, with Milton (40), Lambert (178) and South Forsyth (202) making up the top three. Promising sophomore Mekias Mekonen shined brightest individually for coach Rick Barbe s Vikings, hitting the tape in 25th place with a DeKalb County best state time of 17:23. Senior Myles Boyd (37th; 17:33), junior Jay Clinton (39th; 17:36), senior Jake Tubesing (46th (17:40) and junior William Nelson (69th; 18:11) rounded out the top five in completing the team score for Lakeside. Traditional power Dunwoody, state champions in 2012, 2014 and 2015, turned in the top local finish among girls entrants, ringing up 223 points to walk away with eighth place in the final AAAAAA standings. Senior Samantha Cameron, who claimed state individual honors in 2015, closed out her decorated career by finishing sixth in the blistering time of 20:19 to lead the way for coach Brad Hendrickson s Lady Wildcats. Sophomore Anna Mothner and senior Kelly May Sheehan also turned in strong results, snaring 37th (22:02) and 42nd (22:17) place respectively. Freshman Emma Tessler (67th; 23:13) and senior Nina John (79th; 23:41) rounded out the top five Lady Wildcat entrants, followed by senior Chloe Thomas (85th; 23:59) and freshman Ahna Lorden (93rd; 24:24). Druid Hills, meanwhile, also cracked the top 10 in the final team standings for the girls, registering ninth place in AAAA with 310 points. Coach Sam Brown s Lady Red Devils received a stellar performance from freshman Reese Rathur, who crossed the line in 33rd place in 21:35. Senior Lisa Medford (56th; 22:50), senior Emily Greipsson (58th; 23:05), senior Lydia Medford (60th; 23:09) and junior Ayla Anderson (103rd; 24:48) rounded out the top individual showings for Druid Hills, while sophomore Callie Weidman (105th; 24:51) and junior Abby Thompson (156th; 26:41) also made the trip. The annual DeKalb County Championships, on the other hand, featured familiar faces at the top of the team standings, as Lakeside captured boys county honors for the 31st time in school history and Dunwoody walked away with the girls prize for the seventh time in the last nine years and eighth time overall. Lakeside put together a dominating performance on the boys side, as six runners finished in the top 10 of the final individual results in tallying 22 points to the 77 of runner-up Dunwoody. Tubesing held off Mekonen for first place in the end, clocking in at 17:02 to the 17:04 of his talented underclassman teammate. Boyd also cracked the top five in fourth in 17:19, followed by Clinton (7th; 17:36), Nelson (8th; 17:39) and junior Daniel Martinez (10th; 17:50). Junior Alex Bachman also competed at county for the Vikings, taking home 33rd place in 19:17. Dunwoody narrowly vaulted past powerful Clarkston (79) for second place, as sophomore Max Mowrer finished third in 17:10 to lead the way individually. Junior Walter Henderson (12th; 18:05), junior Cade Lautenbacher (19th; 18:31), junior Abner Boves (21st; 18:40) and junior Alexander Herod (22nd; 18:43) rounded out the top five finishers for the Wildcats. Other top 10 individual placers among the boys included junior Carter Rathur (5th; 17:27) of Druid Hills and Tucker junior Abdilnur Tiroro (6th; 17:28). The Dunwoody girls placed three runners in the top five in registering 36 points to hold off the strong challenge of runnerup Lakeside (44). Cameron sailed to her first individual county crown with a 20:05 clocking, joining older sister Alex Cameron s four victories from 2010-13. Sheehan (3rd; 20:29) and Mothner (5th; 20:59) also cracked the top 10 for the Lady Wildcats, while John (11th; 22:38) and Thomas (16th; 23:09) completed the team scoring. Lakeside s silver place showing was paced by junior Emma Hanson (4th; 20:35), sophomore Sydney DeWoody (7th; 21:55) and junior Abby Hunter (8th; 22:00) in the top 10 on the individual side. 4
