November 2011 Newsletter CASA de AERO R/C Club Prescott Arizona AMA Charter 1723 PRESIDENT Jack Hardy 583-3315 VICE-PRESIDENT Dave Marston 778-4967 SECRETARY Gary Swigart 771-9069 TREASURER Dave Marston 778-4967 SAFETY OFFICER Tom Gatchell 442-1436 BOARD MEMBERS Greg MacCauley 805-341-5887 Bill King 778-4636 CHIEF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR Richard Thomas 443-1757 FIELD MARSHAL Gary Swigart 771-9069 NEWSLETTER EDITOR Gary MacCauley 443-8934 gmaccauley@qwest.net COEDITOR Tom Gatchell 442-1436 steeragemate@cableone.net Welcome to November, what a fantastic month. October turned out to be with warm days, cool nights and no wind. What more could a flyer want? The month started with a work party loading Gary Swigart s truck with 760 pounds of junk and then taking it to the local dump. Thanks Gary and also, a big thanks to Gary MacCauley, Val Goff, and Bill King. We even had three students join the work party Cole, Christian, and Forest, thanks guy s. Rich Thomas, our Chief Flight Instructor, really worked hard on the field this month, dragging and rolling it three times. Only problem now is, it is so smooth that the planes don t want to stop on landing. What a nice problem to have. The maintenance crew from ERAU dug a two foot deep trench the entire length of the field to facilitate water run off. Fantastic job and we sincerely thank you. Speaking of digging, I forgot to tell you that Rich also dug a trench along the west end of the field for water run off. WOW, what a team. Our second Come Fly with Us was held on Oct 8 th and although it was a little cool, we had eleven student, and 21 flights. It was also good to see some students returning for a second try. Our next student day will be on Saturday, November 12, so come on out and help welcome and teach. It s a lot of fun. Thanks to Walter Wilken, for helping me with the ERAU Homecoming celebration on Saturday, where we helped the School R/C club with their table display of R/C planes. What fun, and did I say great lunch? With November just around the corner, don t wait to fly, come on out now. Hope you all had a Happy Halloween. See you at the Field; FROM THE MAIN PROP NUT. BY Jack Hardy, PRESIDENT NEXT MEETING will be Tuesday November 1, 2011 Meetings start at 7:00 PM in room 101, Building 21 (Robertson Aviation Safety Center) On the Embry-Riddle campus, 3700 Willow Creek Road. Visitors are welcome! See you there! Page 1

From the Safety Officers Tom Gatchell and ARF the wonder dog. I received this request from the Safety Officer in place of this month s column. So, here it is. The Editor. Probably no column this month. Post the picture of the red tree instead. Should be home by weekend, hopefully. This "fun" crap is too hard! (and cost a bunch too). Dog is perpetually depressed, no doubt counseling is in order. Other than that, saw a lot of pretty crap and my 99 year old aunt and twin sister of my Mom. Somewhere in the tiny sliver of the Oklahoma panhandle. 1 Garmin Nuvi 250 - CHEAP! (disregard blacktop skid marks, works "perfectly"). Camper Tom No, YOU run and jump off the roof! CASA DE AERO GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING October 4, 2011 Members present: Jerry Alvarez, John Conrad, Walt Findlay, Val Goff, Bill Hurst, Bill King, Glenn Kuhn, Gary MacCauley, Greg MacCauley, Donna Pacini, Tony Pacini, Galen Richmond, Jim Richmond, John Roush, Gary Swigart, Richard Thomas, Joe Tomasic, and Gene Tomek Guests Present: Alberto Nieves, Cole Field, Joshua Cook, Max Bandy and Cinnimon Bandy. Jack Hardy called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. The pledge of allegiance was spoken by the attendees. New club jackets can be ordered from the club Internet site and are selling for $45.00. The Flite Lines will no longer be mailed out but will be available at the regular meeting and at the field. Gary Swigart presented next year s club officer slate: President: Jack Hardy Vice President: Dave Marston Secretary: Gary Swigart Treasurer: Dave Marston Safety Officer: Tom Gatchell Chief Instructor: Richard Thomas Board Members: Bill King and Greg MacCauley Safety Report (Gary Swigart): Some fuel engines can fire right up when the glow plug clip is connected. Secretary s Report (Gene Tomek): Our membership is now 73. The Treasurer s Report (Glenn Kuhn): Our cash balance is $1,734.57. Instructor s Report: A Solo certificate was presented to Jim Richmond by John Conrad. The Club will have two planes out at the Love Field ERAU flight line between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM this Saturday for the ERAU Open House. Last Friday Art Hall stopped by to look at the field. At the same time a sheriff came by and asked that we stop flying since an RC aircraft was interfering with planes landing in the Love Field pattern. This was of course not our Club s flyers. Jack later talked to the Tower Manager and clarified our 400 ft. ceiling rule and flight envelope. Page 2

The Boat Float had 40 people in attendance. Gary Swigart cooked hamburger and hot dogs with Dave Marston supplied. Greg MacCauley flew his helicopter over the lake. Joe Tomasic displayed five of his original aircraft oil paintings and handed out prints of other paintings to members. Joe has been painting aircraft since the mid 70 s and worked for United Airlines for 40 years. Greg MacCauley demonstrated the Casa de Aero web site to the members. The web site s address is casadeaero.com. The following items can be accessed from the main menu: Weather, Flite Lines, Contact Us, Apparel, Picture Gallery, Videos and Links & Manuals. The Club purchased the right to the internet address (casadeaero.com) for $65.00. Next Saturday will be the second Come Fly With Us activity to acquaint ERAU students with RC flying. It will be held from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM at the field with the Club providing buddy boxes, planes and trainers. The event is to be held every second Saturday of each month. Coffee and refreshments were made available throughout the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm. Otto s P-51 making a perfect landing. Tom s 747, aka. Air Force One.
