1 CLARKE COUNTY 4-H JANUARY NEWSLETTER NEWS FROM MALLORY The Extension Office will be closed on Monday, January 1. Make sure to mark your calendar the Fair Board Soup Supper on February 3 rd, 2018. More information is available on page four. Jeff and I are very excited to be adding to our family in March. I will be out on maternity leave from Mid March to Mid May. I will not be checking email during this time. For assistance during this time please call the office at (641) 342-3316. This years County Fair theme is Your Passport to Adventure! The Clarke County Fair will be July 15 23, 2018. The Iowa State Fair dates are August 9 19, 2018. Animal Identification is Now Open in 4-H Online If you plan to show any beef, sheep, goats, dairy, swine, horses, pets, or dogs at the Clarke County Fair you MUST have these animals identified in 4-H online before Tuesday, May 15 at 11:59 p.m. If you are showing market beef, swine (weighed in), sheep or goats, I have/will enter this information for you at weigh-in. All other animals must be completely identified in 4-H online on your own time. PLEASE do not wait until the last minute to complete this process. Rabbits, poultry and bottle calves/lambs/goats have an extended deadline of July 1 to enter their information in 4-H online. Visit https://iowa.4honline.com to identify your animals before May 15. If you have questions, you can set up a time to meet with Mallory at the Extension Office. THANK YOU FOR MAKING CLARKE COUNTY 4-H GREAT! 2 Dog Obedience Class Begins The 4-H Dog Obedience program is offered to Clarke County 4-Hers who are 4-12 graders at no cost. Participants meet each Sunday beginning February 4, 2018 until county fair. 4-Hers and their dogs will learn commands such as; sit, heal, stay, lay down, and much more. They will also work on Rally, and Agility. Please keep in mind, dog obedience classes do NOT count toward your club meetings. 4-Hers need to be active in 4-H online before attending dog obedience classes. Beginners will meet from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Advanced will meet from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Classes will be held at the Osceola Vet Clinic. Please park on the East side of the clinic and walk around to the west side. We need to keep the West drive way clear in case of a livestock emergency. Class will be held in the garage so please dress appropriately. What you will need to bring to the first class: Bring your dog on a 6ft leash Pinch Collar Vaccination Records All dogs will need theses vaccinations: Rabies, DPHLP, and Kennel Cough Dress warm 2
Upcoming Youth Opportunities Livestock Quiz Bowl The livestock quiz bowl tests knowledge of beef, goat, sheep and swine and covers all of the science areas from genetics to nutrition. Iowa 4-H will host its first state livestock quiz bowl contest in March 2018. The contest is open to youth ages 10-19 and will be held at Iowa State University. If you are interested in competing in this contest, please contact Mallory at the Clarke County Extension Office. Equine Extravaganza March 23-25, 2018 at Ellsworth Comm. College, Iowa Falls 4-H Youth Equine Extravaganza will have activities for all youth who are interested in horses from Horse Judging to painting and drawing. Registration will open around Jan. 1 and will be due March 1st. Animal Science Round-Up June 26-28 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa for 4-hers who are grades 8-12. Animal Science Round-Up is full of hands-on animal interaction, ISU Farm Tours, Career Exploration, and much more. Spots are very limited! If you are interested please watch the website around Jan. 1 for the updated application and information. 4-H Animal Science Roundup applications will be due March 1. Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced applications are available for the 4-H scholarship program with over 90 scholarship opportunities to be awarded valued at over $100,000. A complete list of scholarships, eligibility, helpful hints, instructions, and applications are available online. Online deadline is 11:50 PM, February 1, 2018. https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/en/funding_for_4hers/scholarships/ State Recognition Opportunities Exciting opportunities are available for 4-H members (Grades 9-12) through area selection of nominees for: National 4-H Conference a forum to discuss issues of concern to youth and for 4-H'ers from each state to share future 4-H program needs at the national level. National 4-H Congress an educational event for youth to learn about 4-H programs nationwide and be exposed to new cultural experiences. State 4-H Council -- ambassadors for the state 4-H program by providing input on 4-H program issues, planning and executing state events, and practicing leadership, citizenship, and communication skills. State Project Awards -- recognition for youth who have excelled in projects by participating, learning, leading, and evaluating 4-H experiences. This soup supper is a fundraiser to help pay for the Clarke County Fair. The Fair board is asking that all 4-H clubs bring 3 dozen desserts. Clubs/members can drop off the desserts anytime on February 3 rd. Tim M 5 CLARKE COUNTY 4-H CLOVER KIDS SHAPES LEADERS WHO: Osceola Clover Kids & Murray Clover Kids (K-3 rd Grade) WHERE: Clarke County Fairgrounds 2070 West McLane Osceola, IA 50213 Clover Kids is a fun 4-H program specifically designed for children in Kindergarten through third grade. Clover Kids gain positive relationships and build valuable life skills through hands on activities. ENROLLMENT: There is NO cost to participate in the Clarke County Clover Kids program but, 4-H enrollment is required. Guardians must complete their child s enrollment before January 15 th for them to participate. If your child cannot attend each month, please do not let that discourage him/her from participating in 4-H Clover Kids.
