May 2018 Presidents Message As most of us in the club live in SW Florida we can become very spoiled and be Fair Weather athletes. I know I have been called that a time or two from some of my training partners. Anything below 70 and sunny might be considered bad weather. However we had 5 athletes prove that Zoomers members can brave 35 mph winds, pouring rain and a below-freezing wind chill to complete the Boston Marathon. I would like to congratulate Gary Ettinger, Christina Coogan, Betty Staugler, Julie Berling and Sherry LaBree for their outstanding performances, it left many of us wondering how in the heck they finished that race! The multi-sport series kicked off with a bang at Florida Gulf Coast University sprint triathlon & duathlon. It was so nice to see so much purple among the competitors. The competition among the running race series participants continues to be strong with a large showing of runners at Holly Hope 5k/1mile walk. Volunteers were in full force during the month, thank you to those members who continue to step-up to volunteer their time for races and events. Happy Racing, Pat Vasquez, President 3 Zoomersrun.com
High School Student Spotlight: Adriana Otway (AJ) 9th grade student and attends Port Charlotte high school. Her parents are Shelby and Wayne Otway. She has been a Zoomers member for 4 years. Adriana s inspiring mom, Shelby, was the coach for Girls on the Run at Kingsway Elementary school and Adriana joined Girls on the Run in 4th and 5th grade. This program brings a love of running to young girls with Adult Mentors/Coaches while training for a 5K in a non-competitive manner. In middle school, Adriana was mentored by her mom and older brother Shane, a current senior at Port Charlotte high school, to run local races with them. Adriana had the opportunity to condition and train with Port Charlotte high school cross country team, the summer prior to 9th grade. The coach encouraged her to try out for the team. She made the JV cross country team and ran some meets, before sustaining a knee injury. She rested her knee over the winter to avoid any long-term injuries. Adriana, a well-rounded athlete, returned in the spring and tried out for the Port Charlotte high school girls lacrosse team and was a Varsity member as a freshman! Congratulations! Adriana's favorite road race is the trick or trot race, in the fall. This was one of her first timed races she registered in elementary school while enrolled in Girls on the Run. Another favorite race is the Blueberry Horseshoe race in Ocala, run through a horse farm, which she ran in 2017. The longest distance Adriana ever ran was 7 miles, conditioning for Port Charlotte high school cross country team. Her 1 mile PR is 6:50. Adriana states she runs for the adrenaline rush and the competition. She started off running with her mom, then on her own, then with teammates, and now with her two brothers who are zoomer's members and runners. Running is something she feels good about and can do on her own or with others. When her family goes away on trips, they run races in other places too. She competes in a race monthly, if not competing in a high school game meet or event. Look for Adriana at the next local road race or in the fall running Cross Country for Port Charlotte HS! 4 Zoomersrun.com

Zoomers member: Stacey Holmes Stacey Holmes is our member of the month. Stacey has a smile that lights up whenever you see her racing or volunteering. She has been a member of Zoomers for 2 years and she recently became a Nuun ambassador. She loves the interaction of the groups and being around like-minded people. Stacey loves the socialization associated with running and being in Zoomers. How long have you been running? I ve been running for 5 years and biking since Sept. Cycling was not something I was ever interested in. Thanks to my husband Steve who encouraged me through his enjoyment of biking. I purchased a very simple beginner bike not ever thinking it was something I would like, now I absolutely love getting out there with the Bicycles International clan on Saturday mornings, Sunday rides with Zoomers and finishing the 35 mile rides at Tour de Parks & Sharky s Ride the Beaches. Cycling has given me a chance to re-appreciate running & also provide that cross training I need. I m so happy I let Steve talk me into buying a bike, I am now looking at getting a new bike one day. What got you into running? I fell in love with running after starting a boot camp. I would run on the nights I didn t do boot camp with a goal of being able to run the whole distance of the run warm up for class and not stop. Now I ve run a marathon! What is your running or racing goals? My racing goal for 2018 is to PR my marathon time at Chicago Marathon and to finish my first 12 hour Ultra. My first Duathlon will be this month and I m super excited to jump into multi sport racing. What keeps you motivated and moving forward to reaching your goals? Motivation is always a challenge for me but running with a group has helped on Tues and Thurs nights. Steve (my husband) is so supportive and really helps me stay motivated. Being a part of the Zoomers family helps to motivate me as well, witnessing all their accomplishments and having familiar faces on the courses. 13 Zoomersrun.com
