Swimming Pool Basics
Swimming Pool Basics Water Balance 101 H (Measure of Acid vs. Base) Typical Range: 7.2-7.8 Ideal Range: 7.4-7.6 Neutral: 7.0 Acidic: < 7.0 Basic: >7.0 Acid (0) Neutral (7) Base (14) cidic Pools: Prolonged Acidic ph causes pitting in the plaster surface. asic Pools: Prolonged Basic ph causes scaling to build up on the plaster surface.
Swimming Pool Basics Water Balance 101 otal Alkalinity (Measure of Resistance to Change for the ph) Typical Range: Ideal Range: 60 ppm - 180 ppm 80 ppm - 120 ppm igh or Low Total Alkalinity will cause the ph to have drastic swings in readings. ree Chlorine (Measure of the Sanitizer in the Pool) Typical Range: Ideal Range: 1 ppm - 5 ppm 3 ppm - 5 ppm eneral Rules of Thumb: If the pool is clear: add 1 lb per 10,000 gallons each week If the pool is cloudy: add 2 lbs per 10,000 gallons each week If the pool is green: add 3 lbs per 10,000 gallons each week
Swimming Pool Basics Water Balance 101 Total Dissolved Solids (Measure of ALL Items Dissolved in the Water) Typical Range: 1000 ppm or less If the TDS reaches 1,500 ppm or higher, the water should be drained and re-filled. Calcium Hardness (Measure of Calcium Ions in Water) Typical Range: Ideal Range: 150 ppm - 1,000 ppm 200 ppm - 400 ppm At 150 ppm or lower: the water will seek calcium and will pull it from the plaster wall, which causes pitting. At 1,000 ppm or higher: the water will be difficult to balance. The increased calcium in the water will cause the TDS to be too high.
