Who benefits from the Capital Area Polar Plunge? In Special Olympics PA - Area M over 1800 children and adults with intellectual disabilities from Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York Counties are given the opportunity to train and compete in 20 different sports throughout the year. These opportunities are provided free of charge to our athletes and their families. This is made possible in part due to the funds raised through the Capital Area Polar Bear Plunge, which is our largest fundraiser. Special Olympics PA s mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Why Special Olympics is SO important to me! I get more satisfaction from being a volunteer for Special Olympics than anything I have ever done. The athletes are always grateful for just being there for them and caring about their accomplishments. When you are a friend of an athlete you have a friend forever. - Jerry B. I love the sense of sheer joy and pride from the athletes when participating in competition their happiness is contagious! - Susan H. To me Special Olympics PA Area M means the coming together of those with disabilities to play sports in an accepting environment. As a Unified Partner, I play alongside the athletes to cheer them on every step of the way and to show them that they re in a caring, accepting environment where people acknowledge their amazing abilities in their chosen sport. These wonderful athletes are not only my teammates, but they have become a part of my family. - Nick S. I love the comradery the athletes feel for not just one another, but for the families and volunteers. The athletes always want to win, but I have seen athletes make sure another athlete is OK after a fall hug a volunteer for spending the day with them wrap their arms around each other in prayer and just have a smile on their face knowing they are part of Area M.- Sarah G. don t miss this event!
