It marked the second month this season that the Grizzlies have posted double-digits in the win column, finishing November 10-5. Ironically, the Grizzlies still shot over 45.0% in all six of their losses, and shot better from three-point range and from the free throw stripe than in their 10 wins. AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME: The Grizzlies have nine regular season games left during the 2005-06 season, including a split of five games at home and four on the road. Of the Grizzlies eight remaining opponents (play Minnesota twice), only three have a record above.500 this season. Memphis has gone a winless 0-10 in those games. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END; GRIZZ WIN STREAK SNAPPED: The Grizzlies won their season-best seventh consecutive game with a 102-95 victory over Charlotte on Mar. 26, but had their streak halted with a 98-97 loss on Tuesday at FedExForum at the hands of the Seattle SuperSonics. The Grizzlies also won six consecutive games at home at FedExForum, matching their season-best home streak (6, Dec. 21-Jan. 13), also just one win shy of matching the franchise-record of seven consecutive wins at home (Dec. 30/03-Jan. 25/04). *Their home record after Tuesday s loss stands at 25-11, one win shy of matching last season s home win total of 26 the second-most in franchise history. INDIVIDUAL NOTES TRIPLE THREAT; BATTIER, JACKSON POST SEASON-HIGHS, MILLER TOPS 20: Despite Friday s loss to the Hornets, the Grizzlies had three players score 20 points or better for the second time this season. Bobby Jackson scored a season-high 26 points in 29 minutes off the bench, Shane Battier had a season-high 24 points on 10-12 shooting and Mike Miller pitched in with 23 points in 35 minutes off the bench, including a perfect 10-10 performance from the free throw line. The Grizzlies first accomplished the feat earlier this season in a win over New York on Mar. 1. Pau Gasol led the Grizzlies with 23 points, Chucky Atkins tallied 21 points and Eddie Jones contributed with 20 points. Prior to the trio s offensive performance on Mar. 1, it had been over a year since three Grizzlies scored 20 points or better in the same game (Jan. 15/05 vs. Milwaukee J. Williams:25, P. Gasol:22, B. Wells:21). GASOL HAS CAREER NIGHT; CONTINUES OFFENSIVE OUTBURST: Pau Gasol scored a career-high and single-game franchise-record 44 points Tuesday against Seattle, shooting 17-28 from the field and 10-12 from free throw line. Gasol s 44 topped his previous career-high of 39 points and was three points better than the previous franchise record of 41 points (Mike Miller, Bryant Reeves). Gasol has topped the 30-point plateau in three consecutive games from Mar. 24-28, scoring 113 points in that span and setting franchise-record for scoring over three consecutive games. The old record was set by Bryant Reeves, who totaled 101 points in a three-game span from Mar. 23-27/98. GASOL NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: (Mar. 27) Memphis Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol today was selected as the NBA s Western Conference Player of the Week for games played March 20 through March 26. It marks the second time this season he s received the honor. Gasol averaged a double-double of 26.8 points and 10.8 rebounds while shooting.606 from the field, and recording 4.5 assists and 2.75 blocks to lead the Grizzlies to a 4-0 week. Behind Gasol s performance, the Grizzlies extended their current win streak to a season-best seven games, defeating the Indiana Pacers (3/21), Los Angeles Clippers (3/23), New York Knicks (3/24) and the Charlotte Bobcats (3/26). Gasol s eight rebounds on Mar. 24 against the Knicks gave him 3,072 for his career, surpassing Shareef Abdur-Rahim as the Grizzlies all-time franchise leader in rebounds. GASOL LEADING THE WAY: Pau Gasol s 21-point, eight-rebound and four-assist effort at New Jersey Wednesday marked the 10 th time this season he s led the team in all three major statistical categories in the same game (includes ties). Only two other players have accomplished the feat more than Gasol this season, as shown by the breakdown below: MOST TIMES LEADING TEAM IN POINTS, REBOUNDS, ASSISTS GAMES PLAYER 14 James, LeBron 11 Garnett, Kevin 10 GASOL, PAU 9 Pierce, Paul 7 Nowitzki, Dirk FRATELLO TWO WINS SHY OF MATCHING BROWN AS FRANCHISE LEADER IN COACHING VICTORIES: Already the Grizzlies second-winningest coach in franchise history, Feb. 11 s win over the Lakers was Head Coach Mike Fratello s 639 th career coaching victory, surpassing former Pistons coach Chuck Daly for 17 th all-time. Miller is also second on the team in double-doubles, posting his sixth double-dip of the season against the Clippers on Mar. 23, finishing with 21 points, a game-high 14 rebounds and four assists. Miller s six double-doubles also includes his first career triple-double (see Miller in 3-D below). The Grizzlies star reserve has come off the bench in 57 of 65 games played this season and recorded double figures in scoring in 48 games, including 15 games of 20 points and two games of 30 or more (season-high 41 vs. Denver last game). *He ranks first in scoring off the bench in the NBA (13.4 ppg off the bench), and is also one of only three players in the league shooting over 40.0% from three-point range while averaging better than 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists this season (Nowitzki, DAL; Richardson, GSW). PAU-ER IN NUMBERS: Pau Gasol is off to one of the best starts of his career, posting career-highs in almost every major statistical category, and on Feb. 9 was named a Western Conference All-Star reserve. Now in his fifth NBA season, Gasol finds himself ranked among the top 20 in the league in over 15 statistical categories, and among a number of the Western Conference s elite forwards. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES GASOL HAS STELLAR NIGHT IN THE BIG APPLE; BECOMES FRANCHISE REBOUND LEADER: Pau Gasol had another stellar night in a win at New York on Mar. 24, finishing with a game-high 36 points on 14-24 shooting, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks in 41 minutes. His eight rebounds gave him 3,072 for his career at the time, surpassing former Grizzly Shareef Abdur-Rahim (3,070) as the all-time franchise leader in rebounds. The bearded big man also stepped out beyond the arc and knocked down his third three-point field goal of the season and 10 th of his career. MILLER HAS CAREER-NIGHT: Mike Miller scored a career-high 41 points on 15-24 shooting, including a 5-12 performance from three-point range on Mar. 17 vs. Denver, also at the time, tying the franchise mark for points in a single game (Bryant Reeves, @ BOS on Jan. 15/98). Miller s 41 points established a new franchise record for most points scored by a Grizzly off the bench. It also marked the third-highest total by a non-starter over the last 10 years. GASOL POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Pau Gasol had one of the best all-around games of his career at Seattle on Mar. 8, finishing with a game-high 21 points, 12 rebounds and a game and career-high 12 assists recording the first triple-double of his career. Gasol s triple-double was just the fifth in franchise history, and second since the team s relocation to Memphis (see Miller in 3-D below). *Gasol is the only player in the NBA to post a triple-double consisting of at least 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists this season. Gasol also had a career-high four steals and three blocks in 41 minutes. BATTIER NAMED TO MEN S SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM PROGRAM: On Sunday, March 5 USA Basketball revealed the 23 players, including 18 who have played previously for USA Basketball teams, who have been named to the historic 2006-2008 USA Men's Senior National Team program. The selections were announced by USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team program Managing Director Jerry Colangelo. Named to the 2006-08 USA Senior National Team were: Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets); Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards); Shane Battier (Memphis Grizzlies); Chauncey Billups (Detroit Pistons); Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors); Bruce Bowen (San Antonio Spurs); Elton Brand (Los Angeles Clippers); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic); LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers); Antawn Jamison (Washington Wizards); Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks); Shawn Marion (Phoenix Suns); Brad Miller (Sacramento Kings); Adam Morrison (Gonzaga University); Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers); Chris Paul (New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets); Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics); J.J. Redick (Duke University); Michael Redd (Milwaukee Bucks); Luke Ridnour (Seattle SuperSonics); Amaré Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns); and Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat). Battier s previous USA Basketball experience includes taking part in the 2001 Goodwill Games as well as the 1997 Nike Hoop Summit. The 23 selectees are expect to report when the USA opens training in mid-july. The exact training dates and sites will be announced at a later date. GRIZZLIES ALL-STAR ACTION: Pau Gasol appeared in his first All-Star game, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds, including a game-high six on the offensive end (tied with Tim Duncan) in 14 minutes of action. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, prior to this year s game, only one player had even half that many total rebounds in an NBA All-Star Game in which he failed to score (Darrell Imhoff had seven boards in the 1967 All-Star Game; Ben Wallace also had eight rebounds without scoring on Sunday night). His 12 rebounds is also the most in an All-Star game since Tim Duncan pulled down 13 caroms in the 2004 All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Gasol represents the Grizzlies first All-Star in franchise history and the first Spanish player in NBA history to be selected to the All-Star team. Grizzlies rookie Hakim Warrick also participated in this year s All-Star festivities, placing third in the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk competition Saturday night. Warrick becomes the first Memphis Grizzlies player to compete in the contest, and second player in franchise history to participate in the event (Stromile Swift, 2001 Slam Dunk competition). MILLER IN 3-D; GRIZZ STAR RESERVE POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Mike Miller recorded his first career triple-double in a win over Sacramento on Jan. 10, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 41 minutes off the bench. Miller s efforts marked the fourth triple-double in franchise history, and first since the team s relocation to Memphis ending the Grizzlies' streak of 452 games without a player recording a triple-double (since Mike Bibby had one on Apr. 2/00). At the time, it was the second-longest current drought in the league. Utah (at the time) had the longest active streak, but snapped their drought as well at 530 straight games when Andrei Kirilenko recorded his first career triple-double on Jan. 17 (first since Karl Malone posted one on May 4/99). Miller is just the third NBA player in the last 10 years to record a triple-double in a game that he did not start. Shawn Bradley did it for Dallas on Apr. 7/98 as did Magic Johnson for the Lakers on Feb. 14/96. 2005-06 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS: - The Grizzlies win on Nov. 19 @ Utah gave Mike Fratello his 47 th victory with Memphis, surpassing Sidney Lowe as the franchise s second-winningest coach in history. - The Grizzlies opened the season by going 10-5 in November, their best opening month in franchise history. The Grizzlies were one of only seven teams to post 10 or more wins in November in the NBA this season. - Memphis won three-straight games by 20 or more points for the first time with wins over Dallas (Nov. 26), Toronto (Nov. 30) and Orlando (Dec. 2), accomplishing the feat for the first time in franchise history. - The Grizzlies tied the franchise record for the most wins in December, going 9-5 in the month. - By earning their 20 th win with a victory over Golden State on Jan. 3 (only 30 games into the season), the Grizzlies reached the 20-win plateau quicker than they have in any other season. The previous best was through 38 games, accomplished both last season and in the 2003-04 season. For comparison, the Grizzlies didn t crack 20 wins in each of their first four seasons (including the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season). - The Grizzlies record of 25-16 through their first 41 games was their best first-half start to a season in franchise history. GRIZZLIES IN THE COMMUNITY : TICKETS FOR KIDS The Memphis Grizzlies' Tickets for Kids program facilitates the distribution of tickets purchased by Grizzlies season ticket holders, corporate sponsors, players, coaches, and owners to charities and youth organizations throughout the Mid-South. The program aims to provide children who would not otherwise have the resources the opportunity to attend a Grizzlies home basketball game. While doing so, the Grizzlies aim to recognize hard work and achievement in the classroom. This season, 13 Grizzlies players and the coaching staff have donated the resources necessary to provide area children with tickets to Grizzlies home games. GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, MIKE FRATELLO President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced on December 2, 2004 that NBA veteran coach Mike Fratello had been named the Grizzlies seventh head coach in team history. Fratello, 57, joined the Grizzlies as one of the NBA s most successful coaches in history, ranking 19 th on the alltime wins list (572) and 21 st on the all-time games coached list (1,037). A 13-year coaching veteran, he had compiled a 572-465 (.552) overall NBA record, qualifying for the NBA playoffs in nine of his 13 seasons as a head coach (20-34), with an all-time playoff record of 20-34. Fratello inherited a struggling Grizzlies squad that had opened the year 5-11, but quickly started to turn the season around with a victory in his very first game as Memphis head coach with a 94-86 victory over Philadelphia. Under the direction of The Czar, the team went on to post their longest winning streak of the season, winning six consecutive games from December 27 January 7. Memphis carried their momentum throughout January, posting the most wins in the month in franchise history, going 12-3, including an NBA best mark of 6-2 on the road. The Grizzlies efforts during the month earned Fratello Coach of the Month honors for the fourth time in his career, and first with the Grizzlies. The team s 21-9 record in their first 30 games under Fratello, was at the time tied for the seventh best start under a head coach that took over mid or part-way through the season. On March 4, 2005, Fratello reached yet another milestone, becoming just the 19 th coach in NBA history to post 600 wins in his professional coaching career. The Grizzlies finished the year at 45-37, earning a spot in the playoffs for the second consecutive season, and second time in franchise history. Fratello began his NBA coaching career as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks (1978-82), before stepping into his first head coaching role when he and Brendan Suhr were named co-interim head coaches of the Hawks, replacing Hubie Brown 79 games into the 1980-81 season. In 1982, he joined the New York Knicks as an assistant coach for one season (1982-83) before returning to the Hawks as head coach in 1983 to lead Atlanta for seven seasons. During his seven-year stint, he compiled a 324-250 winning record (.564), advancing to the playoffs in five seasons, including leading the Hawks to a Central Division title in 1987. His 324 regular season victories, 18 postseason wins and 577 games coached rank second among Hawks alltime franchise coaching lists. He set a franchise record for winning at least 50 games in four consecutive seasons (1985-89), earning 1986 NBA Coach of the Year honors after leading the Hawks to a 50-32 record. In 1990, he left the sidelines to join the broadcasting booth for the first time in his career when he signed on to cover the NBA on NBC Sports for three seasons (1990-93). In 1993, he returned to the coaching ranks to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers, compiling a 248-212 regular season record and guiding his team to four post-season appearances during his six-year stint (1993-99). His 248 victories rank third on Cleveland s all-time list. After six seasons with Cleveland, Fratello resumed his broadcasting career, joining Turner Sports in 1999 where he has served as a broadcaster for NBA basketball for the past six years. Partnered with Marv Albert and Steve Kerr for TNT s Thursday Night NBA coverage, he also served as an NBA analyst during the playoffs from 1994-1996. In addition, he served as a television analyst for the Miami HEAT broadcast team for three seasons before joining the Grizzlies.
