CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Wilmington, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2010 Message from the President We have a great team of officers for 2011! They are: President, John Travis; Secretary, Diane Fastnacht and Treasurer, Stacy Wells. Thanks to you three for taking a leadership role with the ASGA and we look forward to a great 2011. When John appoints his Golf, Social, Membership and Communication chairs, we will let everyone know. What a gorgeous October day 18 of us enjoyed at Castle Bay recently. The weather started off a little cool, but the Carolina blue sky was cloudless and the temperature warmed up by the end of our round. We had a slim crowd as many of our members enjoyed a trip to Lake Lure. Hope that was loads of fun! Christmas is right around the corner - so let's do something to make someone else's life easier and makes us feel really great as a group and as individuals. For the last few years, we have donated nonperishable food items to the Food Bank of Eastern NC. They have been so very appreciative of our efforts in the past and I hope we will agree to do this again this year. Our Christmas Party has been set for December 3, so I hope everyone will bring food items with them. Last year we collected over 200 lbs. of food. With the current difficult economic, I'm sure they need our assistance now more than ever. Another organization I think our chapter could benefit is the Wilmington Junior Golf Academy. This organization works with area middle and high school students to teach them the game of golf. In talking with Jake Hunt, Executive Director, they are always in need of gently used golf equipment as they have limited resources to play golf. I have asked him to come to our November meeting to tell us exactly what he is up to. In the meantime, look in your garage, attic, and trunk of your car and gather all those clubs that no longer work for you and let's donate them to this worthy cause. I'm feeling better already!! See you soon... ~Ann Howell, President Golf News We are quickly getting close to the end of the year and only have a few outings remaining. In November and December we only have one event per month. Our new golf chair will be working on next year s schedule and may ask you for your suggestions of which golf courses you would like to play. Please give the golf chair all the support that you gave to me. I thank everyone for all the help that I received. Thanks members. On October 16th, we played Castle Bay and the weather was just great for golf. Closest to the pin for the women was Norma Tofaute and for the men it was John Stenerson. At each event, we will be collecting $1 from each player and guest for the bag attendant. Regarding cancellations: Please call or e-mail Mike Petruzzi 3-4 days in advance if you think that you will not be able to attend the event for any reason. Please remember to let Norma Tofaute know if you will be eating with our group after the event. ~Mike Petruzzi, Golf Chair Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) - Battle at the Beach - November 11-14, 2010. In The Spotlight Clare Parsons Clare is the greatgranddaughter of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson. Her aunt, Mrs. John S. Crenshaw, sponsored the destroyer, USS Sampson (DDG 10), in May 1960 in Bath, ME. Her maternal grandfather was Rear Admiral Wat Tyler Cluverius, US Navy, who also fought in the Spanish-American War. Born in San Diego, the daughter of William Deak S. Parsons (USN Officer) and Martha C. Parsons in 1937. As a Navy Junior, she moved quite often but the most memorable of her life were spent in Los Alamos, NM, and later in Washington, DC. Her father, as a Navy Captain, armed the first atomic bomb, Little Boy, in the Enola Gay where he served as the Bomb Commander and from which the first atomic weapon was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Because of the notoriety of her father, she has shared in many ceremonies honoring his legacy. When she was only 16, her father died at the age of 52, by then a USN Rear Admiral. During her high school years, she lived primarily in Washington, DC and later attended the University of New Mexico, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1959. She then entered the Navy as an Ensign and subsequently entered the Naval Reserve and retired as a Commander in 1984. During this time, she also received a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1972 in the field of Education. Following her retirement from the Naval Reserve, she worked for 16 years as a Sales Rep for an insurance company. Clare s favorite avocation is playing golf, and she moved to Wilmington, NC in 2004 to enjoy the beach community and the many golf courses in this area. She has been a member of ASGA for one year and just renewed. Clare said single people need to get out of the house and meet other people with similar interests like golf.
