Sure we have wrestled with uncertain lies and great ruff at times but all in all it s been a great start to 2018. The monsoons have begun and have brought welcome relief to our golfing landscape. Word has it that we re about to embark on another punching escapade. A little lift, clean and place appears to be on the horizon again. (Check out GOOD TO KNOW) Remember the rules help to keep your score card clean. There s much to do on the schedule. The Pick Your Partner field is near complete and the MGA continues to look at new and exciting events both golf and social. Volunteers are an important part of a successful association. If you are one of the many, great; if asked please consider; and if just thinking about it come and be part of our growing organization. New members and those not so new are all needed. UPCOMING SBRMGA EVENTS August events include a Chapman Flighted, an Individual Stableford Flighted, the two day Pick Your Partner Open, a 2 Man Chapman Flighted and a 2 Man Best Ball event. That s a full month of golf. Something for everyone. So sign up, tee it up and swing away.
Page 2 BY POPULAR DEMAND The Rule of 90 Revisited In non-flighted events all golfers play the blended pine/rust tee boxes with the exception of those golfers whose age plus qualifying handicap equals 90 or greater aka the Rule of 90. The qualifying handicap to be considered is the golfer s blended pine/rust handicap. At the golfer s option they may play the rust tees provided they notify the Events Chairman. The golfer will continue to play the Rust Tees until their age plus blended pine/rust handicap falls below 90 at which time the golfer reverts to playing the blended pine/rust tees. The rule of 90 may make your golfing experience more enjoyable. The golfer s course handicap will be adjusted in accordance with the USGA guidelines. The course handicap will be the golfer s rust tee handicap minus 2 strokes. In flighted events the Rule of 90 does not apply. Tee box assignments are as follows: A flight pine; B/C flight blended pine/ rust; and D flight rust. USGA RULES CHANGES 2019 The Rules Changes effective 2019 are numerous. We ll address these individually as we approach the new year. Those most likely to impact us include 1) A ball moved during search; 2) A ball in motion accidentally deflected; 3) Procedures for taking relief; 4) Hitting an unattended flagstick; 5) Areas of the course defined and actions permitted; 6) Golfer conduct; and 7) General Area vs Through the Green and local definitions clarifying/limiting. Though numerous the rules changes are designed to improve play for all golfers with an edge to overall fairness. It ll be great fun.
Page 3 GOOD TO KNOW Temporary local rule for SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club: Period of time: From present until over seeding is complete. We are in the period of summer transitioning to the base Bermuda turf grass. During this time the condition of the fairways can suffer. When your golf ball lies in the fairway you may encounter some challenging lies due to wet conditions (muddy golf ball), aerifying holes, plugged lies, or brown thatch. In this case you may: Mark your golf ball Clean your golf ball Place the golf ball within one club length of your marker, no closer to the hole Further modifications for CLUB EVENTS when in the fairway: 1. When your ball comes to rest in a damaged area (the absence of turf or turf that is brown and looks dormant), you may take relief to the nearest patch of growing turf. We will consider these areas as Ground Under Repair and you may clean and drop your ball. 2. When your ball comes to rest in an area that is outside of these damaged areas, you mark the spot where your ball is lying then you may Lift, Clean and Place your ball within 1 club length, no closer to the hole, from the spot where your ball was marked. Questions please email to handicap@sbrmga.org These temporary local rules modifications apply only to golf balls in the fairway The SBRMGA Events, Special Events and Handicap and Rules Chairmen and their committees continue to give time to making everyone's golfing experience the best possible. Their coordination with the Golf professionals and staff is an integral part of achieving better golf for all. Thanks to Ed, Harley and Rob.

Page 5 THE SHAG BAG Occasionally the past gurgles to the top. Some fifty years ago many of us contemplated axioms How about a few Ranch Axioms known to the Shagmeister. There is no shot so simple that it can t be messed up. Go ahead and talk to your ball but once struck it has a mind of its own. Better that you speak to the green or the cup or the tee markers at least they remain committed. For the Range Golfer that which is easy in practice is impossible on the course. Some rounds were deductible but now some may be taxing. Best shots seem to come after conceding the game. Brands of Golf Balls no matter the brand they all travel the same distance, short of the intended. The corollary - or well past the target. Lastly, ok just for today,. We have the Duck Hook aka the Snap Hook how about the Lew Alcindor (Kareem sounds too harsh). Definition, for those wondering, it s the dreaded Sky Hook. A line from another era is clearly pointed to our brother golfers. It don t mean a thing if it ain t got swing Sign up, tee it up and swing away. Contributions always appreciated at communications@sbrmga.org
