HAPPY NEW YEAR! ISSUE 01 JANUARY 2017 WELCOME TO YOUR BIBC! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all BIBC members to the club s first newsletter. Jemma has kindly offered to spend some of her time editing this intended biennial contact sheet for us, who knows, we could all be setting the stage for the next Ian Hislop or even our own JK Rowling on these pages! Newsletters and club magazines can only succeed if the editor receives sufficient copy to fill the pages so let s try to keep Jemma well informed of any interesting events or club news that may be a good read for other members. I really enjoy my Tuesday evenings, good exercise, excellent company, I will try to keep it that way for you all. Any suggestions to improve the club will be welcome and be given due consideration before being dispatched to the bin. (only joking). I get numerous requests from the web site to join the club, up till now some have been filtered down to BETHS to boost their numbers but I am now informing new enquirers that both venues are full until further notice. For those of you who don t know, Jem is sufficiently deranged to spend some of her weekends jumping out of aeroplanes from a great height and leaving it to the last feasible moment to deploy her please let me down slowly device, let s all agree not to give her any hassle that may take her It was an action packed BIBC tournament in 2016! mind off pulling that vital cord in good time. Chairman Rod Smith NEW BIBC MEMBERS The BIBC would like to extend a warm welcome to its newest members: BIBC TOWNLEY Graham Broughton joined us in August Le Tieu Ha joined in September Geoff Thorpe has re-joined Alison and Paul Carlton BIBC BETHS Sophia Essien 11/2016 Beths players pay a visit to Townley Upbeat Townley players after competing in the 2015 Team tournament. COACHES CORNER RACKET GRIP! Dear Club Members Wish you all a very Happy New Year 2017. May year 2017 bring more badminton laurels for you; remember the next BIBC tournament is to be held on 13th May 2017. On reflection I can state confidently that general level of games has improved at both of our venues. However as our club ethos is continuous improvement ( I in our club s name stands for Improvers ) I would encourage our members to take advantage of the presence of three Level 2 and two Level 1 coaches during the Tuesday evenings. Even world number ones require and have coaches! Tip: Holding the racket with the correct grip is very important; this will enable you to play shots from any position in the court. The four main grips to use are 1) Basic Grip used for most forehand shots 2) Thumb grip for shots in front of the body on the back hand. 3) Panhandle grip mainly for net kills and 4) Bevel grip for backhand clears. Coaches will be happy to help you with above grips! So improve/learn at your own pace and keep enjoying the game!! Vinay Head Coach BIBC PROGRESSION AT BETHS It has been a real pleasure for me being at Beths with a terrific bunch of folks who have made good and discernible progress over the past 12 months. The 2 main things which stand out most for me over this period have been the way the players approach to the start each session and how they now carry themselves during their game. One thing which many players are prone to do upon arrival at a venue is to jump straight onto the court and start hitting a shuttle without warming up properly. This generally increases the risk of sustaining injuries. Earlier this season, we spent a week or two introducing a few warmup movements and stretching exercises and it is heartening to see majority of the Beth players now doing warmup and stretching routines (without prompting) before they pick up their rackets! ATTENDANCE! The BIBC would like to extend a very warm welcome 75% to all its new members who have joined us recently! We hope that you re enjoying your tuesday evenings with us. As you will have noticed, our sessions at both Townley and Beths are very well attended. As we are currently at maximum player There has also been an overall improvement to the quality of play at the venue due the players willingness to take on board and try out ideas like grip changing, footwork and taking the shuttle early. I have seen players now returning shots that they wouldn t have been anywhere near the shuttle previously, let alone hit it. This has resulted improved player self- confidence, more closely contested games and enjoying themselves on court even more! Very well done to everyone at Beths! With invaluable help & support from Daniel, I am sure we can, and will, continue to make further progress! Kim capacity, we consequently have to keep a waiting list which is full of names of people who d like to join as BIBC members. We must therefore insist that all new players achieve at least a 75% attendance for the year. Thanks. Dave DROP SHOTS & EQUIPMENT A bad forehand grip! Terry will show you how to master devilish drop shots! Be sure to ask him for advice when you next see him. Also if you ever require new badminton equipment, here are 3 sites that Terry recommends: http://www.isportstore.com http://www.directbadminton.co.uk https://www.centralsports.co.uk Terry A good forehand grip. Thanks Dave! POSITIVITY! "Originally joining Beths as a playing member, I attained my coaching award 2 years ago and now coach fellow members at that venue. I have been impressed with the enthusiasm and progress shown by all the players who attend the sessions there. Common questions I have been asked are how to get more power in shots or how to get shots to just go over the net. In the coming year we will be reviewing each of the shots, covering the basic techniques for each one. To improve these techniques is all about practise and not being worried about trying these new skills in games and making mistakes! It might be frustrating at first but remaining positive and keeping at it will improve your game in the long run!" Daniel GENERAL During your tuesday sessions, coaches do their best to make the games as competitive as possible by mixing up the players and balancing teams. Occasionally players can get caught up playing the same members several times during one evening. If this happens, do let your coaches know. Please don t wait until the end of the evening to make him aware.
