````````````````````````` Page 1 of 100 September, 2017 A I S C FROM THE HELM Commodore Charlie Hayes 2017 January- Swim with the Manatees at Crystal River. We drove over to Crystal River, stayed at The Plantation Hotel.an old Southern classical resort (built 1962). We found our very own group of Manatees that stayed with us for over an hour while we played, took pictures and had a perfect warm day. We have gone the last two (2) years.could we make this a yearly item??? 1
February- We had an interesting ride around the port of Jacksonville and learned about the huge tonnage coming thru providing jobs for our Northern Florida community. We are trying to find some new things to do. March- Little Talbot Fried Chicken Picnic South-end get together. The club provided the chicken, and we had a chance to get together, visit out by the beach. Lots of attendance good feedback. End March- Attended Maritime Museum in their new location. Great evening get-together and a visit to the distillery next door. July- Traveled to Palatka, played on the St. Johns We saw how old Florida waterway commerce moved river. July- Traveled to Salt Springs in the Ocala National Forest, swam at Salt Springs and then ventured out on Lake George and back into Silver Glen Springs. We stayed 2
overnight in Palatka, Sunday found us traveling the St Johns River back into swamp country. July 28- birthday for both the Commodore & Vice Commodore found us tubing down the Ichetucknee Springs. OLD KIDS RULE. We had enough people (16)..maybe we should do this again next summer! Plan to go to the Sound End- Little Talbot Island again September 30 th. Start with afternoon drinks-bring own (byob). September cool weather should have hit a few days earlier and the weather should be great. More to come in next few days!!! Gotta check with the ladies to figure out what we need and how to organize. DARLENE.JANET.help!!!! What we identified but have not done or done enough of..yet: Visit Cumberland Island we haven t been able to sail and get to the docks because of the damage from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Don t know we will be able to get boats to the dock, probably not until 2018. Visit Fort Clinch, sit down on the beach by the inlet water and relax..you can do this with a loved one any afternoon. ANYTHING to do around water. More Parties..We have several upcoming visits to homes of our members, but we are ALWAYS looking for another outing. Please invite us. My wife is having a Halloween Party in Macon, GA on Oct 21, 2017.. Everyone is invited. Hotel rooms abound and she/we would love to have you come. It s only a short 4 hour drive. Vice Commodore Tom Maguire Dog Days of Scuttlebutt OK, so the dog days of summer are really related to when the dog star, Sirius, rises with the sun in the morning. But it sure seems like the right phrase to describe the light winds and high temperatures we ve had making for less than ideal sailing conditions. Well, except for those few days when the conditions were just right now if only they weren t usually when those persnickety thunderstorms popped up! According to the National Geographic website, it turns out that due to the earth s wobble the dog days will eventually be in the middle of the winter. Of course, that s due to occur in about 13,000 years. 3
However, just the term dog days seems like a great thing to blame for not having anything new to say when John said its Scuttlebutt time again! So, let me state the obvious. We re looking forward to the return of some steady winds and even a few dock parties. And, even though the clouds blocked the sky for a good portion of our recent eclipse viewing during these dog days, we did get a clear look at the start of the eclipse with my homemade pinhole projector. Amazing what you can do with a cardboard box, some aluminum foil (didn t we used to call that tin foil?) and a pin: What a show! Have to go now and start working on my excuse for next month s Scuttlebutt. Rear Commodore Ed Spang The web site continues to evolve as more pages and detail are added and we as a club become more familiar in the use and operation of the Wild Apricot software. Recently the home page has been updated. Pages have been added to the site for: Landside, membership and racing. In addition events have been posted for the rest of 2017 in site events calendar page. You will also find a photos page with a slideshow or two. The web site will continue to evolve with added features. I encourage you to look at the web site periodically as planning and informational source. Your feedback is greatly appreciated on what is there, what might be different and suggestions for future enhancements. Thanks for reading and your support. This month, desserts are taken care of so Ballard through Mooney please bring a salad that is more of a main dish. Murphy through Zachary please bring a salad that is more of a side dish. Race Committee Bob Canon Race Report This years' struggle with the Gods of advance weather forecasting continued Saturday, 8/26. As of Friday night, it appeared we could get the race in before afternoon thunder storms popped up from the East, but Saturday morning the forecast had them coming in at noon with 80% chance of showers around 1100. Based on that, I reluctantly cancelled the event. Seeing no storms in sight at 0930, I motored out to the start line. No rain but also only 5 kts of wind, contrary to the 15-25 Kts predicted. A short but intense shower came thru at 1115 followed by clearing skies and 15-20 Kts. Tricked again! BUT, we will be back in September with multiple races and good times. It s good I'm not working for the weather channel. I d be fired! Schedule for remainder of season: September 16 & 23 October 28 November 4 and 18 All subject to discussion and weather. Be safe and have fun If you wish to volunteer for crew duty, give me a call at 904-556-3988, and I will try to get you aboard a boat. Past Commodore Steve Ritter 7
