Grand Lagoon Yacht February 2016 10653 Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL 32507 850-607-7569 office@grandlagoonyachtclub.com Like us on Facebook at Grand Lagoon Yacht (group) Commodores Corner Hello, Everybody. Your is off to a busy and exciting year! We held our first Board meeting for the 2016 and it was most eventful. Our Treasurer, Steve Jones, has accepted a position in Afghanistan and will be leaving his position as of 1-31-2016. Steve will be out of the country for 18 months. We will miss his financial expertise and look forward to his return. Joey O'Neill was approved by the Board to fill Steve s post for 2016. Joey has held the position previously. Steve Payne, a 2016 Board candidate, was approved to fill the vacant Board seat. We have the Redneck Regatta coming up on the 31st. Fleet Captain Mike Odom reports that 30 boat kits have been purchased, but several are still available. Mike will have classes for kids, women and an overall winner. Decorate your kits and race for the finish line. My goals for the year is to keep the members happy, increase membership, have fun events and stay financially sound. Ute Knowlton has agreed to bring back Oktoberfest this year. I understand it is a good time for all. Thank Ute and offer to assist. Let me know if you have other events you like to see at the. I have heard rumors of a reunion bond fire. Ronnie Day, Commodore P.S. Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo is June 17-19 The Vice s Voice HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! The New Year s Eve party went well, and a great time was had by all. Thank you for your donations to the Employees Christmas Fund. Our new chef, Jacob, and new line cook, Jeramii, have been doing good jobs settling into their new positions at GLYC. I have received many positive comments about the food and its presentation. REMINDERS: Mardi Gras party is February 5, so get you bangles and beads together. Super Bowl and Chili Cook-off is on the 7th, and Valentine Sunday Brunch is February 14. We are considering ways to develop a new Member Program as well as setting up an Events Committee to handle decorating the for member events. Will keep you informed. I am looking forward to a great year for the and appreciate the opportunity to serve as Vice. Rick Wade, Vice-Commodore Remember to sign all of your guests in! Florida liquor laws require members of private clubs to sign in and remain with guests at all times. Failure to do this can result in the loss of our license. Also, we have changed our sign-in book. We ask that you list your name, GLYC number, your guests names and their email addresses. Maybe we can pick up a new member or two! 1

CRAPPY CRAFTERS CORNER Another successful Biloxi trip thanks to Georgia, for her hard work in handling the sign-in sheet, collecting the funds and making the mimosas, although THEY made for a sticky situation. Thanks to Red and Emma for the Bloody Mary s, to Dean, of course, for her Rum Punch, and to those who brought snacks. The $15 Bingo winners going over were Jim Ward, Lynda Day. Susan and I shared the last game. The 50/50 winner was Veronica Pack with $67.00. Coming back we played Bingo again with the winners being Richard Main, Kathryn Terry, and Norma Jolly each winning $14.00. Again, thanks to everybody for making this another fun trip. Our next trip, tentatively, will be the THIRD Tuesday in May. Our January Birthday girls are Becky and Kim. Happy Birthday you two!! February s fun day will be the THIRD Tuesday, the 16th, Art with Dodge. It was so much fun last time, he s agreed to come back again. Please mark your calendars. He s supplying everything, so there will be a nominal fee. Cheri will put out an email closer to the date with more details. On a sad note, Diane's husband, Steve Sayler, lost his battle with cancer on the 26th of December. We who know him fell a great loss. Prayers and hugs go out to Diane. See ya round the, Kathy BILL HARGREAVES FISHING RODEO As most of you know, the 45th annual Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo in 2015 was a BIG success for the. We had countless juniors with big smiles on their faces when they weighed in their catch at the scales during the weekend. One of the key reasons that led to this success was the great Executive Committee who worked hard to put together the resources and planning to make the tournament work. And certainly, we cannot forget those great volunteers who come out and work the weekend for us during the event. As we begin the New Year it is time to organize the committee for the 2016 tournament to be held June 17-19. This will be the 46th Anniversary year for us and we need to make the event the best we have ever had. We need members to volunteer for the committee to help get the advertisers and sponsors on board to support us again in 2016. If you wish to place an ad or sponsor a fish, contact me or Mary Ann Hunt. If you can serve on the committee and/or help with getting advertisers/sponsors please provide me with your email address and phone number prior to the next meeting date. You may reach me at chuck.pi@cox.net or phone number 850-572-4533. I ll be sending out an email after the meeting date is set. CHUCK HASKELL, Chairman 3

Winter is here, and that means a few rough days. Please take a few minutes to check your lines and hardware, as there have already been a few rough days. We will have another work day coming up this spring to get the ready for boating season. Be on the lookout for the sign-up sheet. Speaking of boating season, it s right around the corner, and now is the time to get that yearly maintenance done. If you have a boat in either a dry or wet slip, you will need to update your information (slip agreement, proof of insurance, signed copy of dock rules) with Mary Ann. Speaking of slips, we are full on the east side wet slips, and full on dry slips. There are still a few wet slips on the west side. If you would like a slip, please sign the waiting list on the bulletin board in the hall way. Available slips will be first come, first served from the list. Ramsey Green, Rear Commodore 2016 GLYC Board Commodore: Ronnie Day Vice Commodore: Rick Wade Rear Commodore: Ramsey Greene Fleet Captain: Mike Odom Secretary: Countess Guiles Treasurer: Joey O Neill Past Commodore: Joe Cook Board Members: Chuck Haskell, Kathy McCaffrey, Tracy Devack, Steve Payne and Ken Vierling. Commodore s Clean-up Comment: If you have been catching instead of fishing please place the fish and bait remains over the side at the T Pier. Keeps the crabs and sharks away from the beach. Also, please carry your trash to the DUMPSTER. The unlined trash cans under the club are for special events. Thanks to all for picking up after yourselves and helping to keep the club looking good. Joe C. 4

2/2016 Communication from the Fleet Captain : Hello sail, motor, rowing, and land locked sailors, I have been promoted to Fleet Captain for 2016. As we start into the new year there are a few programs being formulated. I am doing my part to bring a compelling and fun program to the table and as such I expect you to attend and participate in planned activities. If you have a suggestion for future topics or have skills that can be shared with the community please let me know.!***lecture series*** February: Suddenly in Charge. It is important to understand your role on a vessel should you become the person dealing with an unplanned promotion to captain due to unforeseen circumstances. How do you manage first aid? How do you call for help? How do you get the boat ashore? How do you decide the priorities of action? This lecture on Thursday will include some practical experience. March: Fishing tips and techniques or Spring Maintenance Review. ***GLYC Sailing Team*** The 2016 sailing team is forming. We have some interested sailors who want to learn how to sail and are taking this opportunity to be on the ground floor as we build a new sailing team. We are in need of some Junior Sailors (ages 8-21) to form the junior sailing side of the team and some experienced sailors to help teach. Please contact Fleet Captain Mike Odom at 512-565-2748 for more information. * * * Red, Red, Red, Red, Redneck Regatta! * * * The Redneck Regatta boat kits are now here! If you ordered one, you may pick it up in the office. If you can t remember if you paid or not, then you didn t! We have a few extras, so it s not too late to get one and enter the race. Only $10 will get you a boat and all the fun you can stand. NOTE: The number you need to put on your boat s sail is the order in which you registered. The list is on the bulletin board next to the s back doors. The race course will be set up in the clubhouse and available for shake-down cruises, Saturday, January 30, from 3:00 p.m. to closing. Come out and join the fun as the entrants test out the sea-worthiness of their crafts. The official races start at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31. If you decide you want to get in on the fun but don t have a boat, you can still enter, or sponsor an entry, for only $10 if you can sweet talk one of the boat captains into the loan of his or her vessel. Good luck, and happy sailing! May the biggest Blow-Hard win! 5
