BACKLASH Commentary from the Board of Directors -By John Wetlaufer, Sr. NOVEMBER PROGRAM BUILDING AN AMAZING CENTER CONSOLE VAC Member and North Carolina Resident Brendan Strum had total access to the Regulator Marine manufacturing plant in Edenton, NC and has documented the step-by-step construction of a Regulator 31 with twin 300hp Yamaha 4 strokes hung on a bracket at the stern. This is a rare chance to see how one of the sturdy, sleek and popular center console boats are manufactured from a drum of resin to the finished product moored at the dock. Where s the dock? Actually, the 31 is moored at the bulkhead behind Brendan s home in Pirates Cove in Nags Head, NC. FORMER VAC MEMBER ROSS HOLSCLAW PULLS LINES Former Virginia Anglers Club Member Ross Richmond Holsclaw, 86, passed away on Sunday October 7, 2016. Ross joined the VAC in 1984. Ross did not let living in Machipungo, VA on the Eastern Shore of Virginia slow him down. The majority of Ross angling was done at/off Hatteras, NC. He holds the historic record for an 8 lb. Spanish mackerel on 30# General. Those who knew Ross found him a very friendly guy. Health issues prevented Ross from making the long drive to Richmond from Machipungo. The Regulator 31

Page2 SEPTEMBER PROGRAM STURGEON RESEARCH UPDATE MATT BALAZIK COME UPON A DEAD OR INJURED STURGEON? WHAT SHOULD YOU DO Matt Balazik Speaking at the September VAC Membership Meeting Former VAC member Dr. Matt Balazik brought us up to date on the research of the Atlantic Sturgeon he did while at VCU. The presentation ranged from the life cycle of an Atlantic Sturgeon to statics on how well the specie is recovering. Matt is the man to contact and to contact promptly. Contact Matt at 804-484-5300 (C) or balazikmt@vcu.edu Matt can now give permission for people to work on his behalf. As long as the person is in contact with Matt, he/she can possess a dead sturgeon but not a dying or injured sturgeon. If a sturgeon is injured but not dead, it cannot be in the possession of anyone. Leave the injured fish alone and send the location, condition of the fish, and picture if possible to Matt. If the fish is dead, it may be dragged to shore so Matt or his associates can later retrieve the carcass. A simple picture, time and location really help Matt and his associate researchers out. Location information can be geographic or a set of GPS coordinates. Be sure to drag the carcass so it will rest above any tide line. Life History of the Atlantic Sturgeon His presentation was very well illustrated. Matt reported that, unfortunately, the batteries that power the transponders on specific sturgeon that Matt has tagged for VAC Members are now dead and no travel data is being generated. Sturgeon Scales Are Impressive in Size When a Tagged Sturgeon Passes this Array, Data on the Fish is Taken and Stored

Page3 OCTOBER CONSERVATION AND LEGISLATION REPORT [by Suzanne Lucas] SNAKEHEAD FISH SHOW UP IN PENNSYLVANIA TRIB TO SUSQUEHANNA RIVER A recent article in the Chesapeake Bay Media (an electronic newsletter from the publishers of The Chesapeake Bay Magazine) reported an angler in Pennsylvania recently caught a snakehead fish in a tributary to the Susquehanna River located in Lancaster County. The catch was made in the middle area of the run of the Susquehanna, the major source of freshwater flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. Thinking this forward, the reader easily sees this is another thread to the waters of the Bay. Here is the link to the article: https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/baybulletin/2018/9/19/first-snakeheads-caught-in-pa-creek-off-susquehanna-river?utm_source=all+mail&utm_campaign=a7728e2b04-email_campaign_2018_04_25_copy_01&utm_ medium=email&utm_term=0_39a7fb996d-a7728e2b04-178286733) ARE LED LIGHTS MESSING UP YOUR VHF RADIO S OPERATION? Again, from the Chesapeake Bay Media, comes another alert from the United States Coast Guard that LED lights on a boat (LED cockpit lights, spot lights, navigation lights, etc.) can interfere with the proper operation of your VHF radio. The article contains a simple test that any boat owner can do to verify if his communications are safe from LED light interference. The link is: https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/baybulletin/2018/8/31/led-lights-a-hidden-hazard-on-boats TWO SOURCES OF EXCELLENT FRESHWATER FISHING INFORMATION FOR THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA The following link will take you to all you need to know about angling legally in the Commonwealth of Virginia and also on-line services offered by the VDGIF. https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/ Also of interest in this webpage is a link to an interactive guide on finding the best places for the species of fish you want to catch. At the webpage, the angler can select species sought. She/he can then go to a map that shows suggested places to fish for the species you selected. http://vafwis.dgif.virginia.gov/findwildlifeva/#/findfish (1) Members may directly email the Conservation & Legislation Chairperson, Suzanne Lucas, at conservation@virginiaanglersclub.org
