Heather Linstad, Head Coach At the helm of the University of Connecticut women s ice hockey program since its inception, head coach Heather Linstad is set to guide the Huskies in her 12th season behind the bench. Linstad has led the Huskies to seven Hockey East tournament appearances over the past nine seasons, including WHEA Championship appearances during 2009-10 and 2004-05. Linstad has been a head coach for 19 seasons, spending the last 11 at UConn, collecting 154 of her 315 career victories with the Huskies. On February 13, 2010, with a 4-1 victory over Providence, Linstad captured her 300th career victory to become one of just six Division I women s ice hockey coaches to achieve 300 or more wins in their career. This past June Linstad was selected as the head coach of the U.S. Women s National Under-18 team and has been working with the squad during the USA Hockey Women s National Festival. A native of Chlemsford, Mass., Linstad came to Connecticut after eight seasons at the helm of the Northeastern University women s ice hockey team. Linstad, a 1989 graduate of Providence College, earned a degree in business administration while representing the Friars in three varsity sports. She was team captain for three of the four seasons she played on the women s ice hockey team, scoring 76 goals and adding 72 assists. She was awarded the 1989 ECAC Player of the Year Award and continues to hold the distinction of being the only individual to earn the ECAC Player of the Year Award and the ECAC Coach of the Year Award. In addition to her outstanding ice hockey career at Providence, Linstad played three seasons of soccer and spent a year on the softball squad. Last Time vs. Minnesota-Duluth... Last October, the Huskies were swept in a weekend series, hosted by the Bulldogs. It was the first time that the two teams took the ice to face one another. UConn was shutout in game one, 8-0, and game two, 4-0, by then No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth. Alexandra Garcia provided 35 saves in the 4-0 loss for the Huskies. Jessica Wong tallied a hat trick in the opener and collected two assists in game two. Audrey Cournoyer and Haley Irwin each totaled three scores and had two assists for the weekend. Kim Martin made 21 saves to earn a shutout in game two. Against the WCHA... Connecticut holds an all-time record of 7-14-5 when facing opponents out of the WCHA. At home the Huskies are 4-6-1, in cluding a three-game win streak over then No. 10 Ohio State and Minnesota State, who UConn defeated on backto-back nights, in October of 2007. Prior to last year s match-up with UMD, the Huskies split a weekend series at Minnesota State in October of 2008. Up Next... UConn remains at home for its first two Hockey East contests of the season as Maine visits the Freitas Ice Forum next weekend. The Huskies take on the Black Bears at 7:00 pm on October 21 and again at 2:00 pm on October 22. Freshmen Firsts... Seven different players have scored for Connecticut through four games, none of whom have scored more than once, and three of them have been freshmen. Caitlin Hewes, Sarah MacDonnell, and Emily Snodgrass have each recorded the first goal of their collegiate careers through the first two weekends of the season. Hewes and Snodgrass each have two points, including one assist each, while classmate Rachel Farrel recorded her first career point with an assist against St. Lawrence last weekend. Red-shirt sophomore Maggie Walsh has also made her presence in the lineup known as she is tied for second on the team with two assists, her firsts in a UConn uniform. Battle Between the Pipes... Garcia and Nicole Paniccia have each started two games so far this season. Garcia has earned two ties, while Paniccia has taken both losses for the Huskies. Despite coming away on the short end twice, Paniccia has put together better numbers as she has given up four goals and made 46 saves for a.920 save percentage. Garcia, who has logged more minutes thanks to two overtime games, has allowed six goals and provided 59 saves for a.980 save percentage. Special Teams... Connecticut has limited its penalties thus far this season, averaging just 5.5 minutes spent in the box per game. However, the Huskies have given up three power play goals in 11 opprtunites.
