The team will play at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Friday and Saturday with both games starting at 7:05 p.m. WEEKS JOINS ELITE CLUB 4 Senior Jason Weeks joined an exclusive club this past weekend, becoming just the fifth player since Canisius moved to Division I to record his 100th career point. 4 Weeks is the second Griff to reach the 100-point plateau this season, joining Josh Heidinger. 4 The two joined former Griffs David Deeves, Chris Duggan and Michael Cohen in the club. 100-Point Scorers 4 Weeks also moved to within two goals of the program s record. He has now netted 47 career goals, just shy of Deeves mark of 49. HUDSON AND CONACHER LISTED ON HOBEY BAKER BALLOT 4 Senior defender Carl Hudson and junior forward Cory Conacher are both listed on the initial Hobey Baker ballot, awarded to the top collegiate player in the country. 4 Hudson has recorded 20 points, six goals and 14 assists as a senior. He currently ranks sixth nationally among defenders with 0.95 points per game. 4 Conacher has amassed 31 points, 15 goals and 16 assists this season. He ranks in the top 20 nationally in five categories, highlighted by placing second with 1.55 points per game. 4 Fans can vote who they think deserve the award by visiting HobeyBaker.com. CONACHER RANKS AMONG THE NATION S BEST 4 Junior Cory Conacher s Hobey Baker nomination is well deserved, as he ranks among the best in the nation in a number of categories this season. 4 Conacher has amassed 31 points, 15 goals and 16 assists during his junior campaign. 4 He currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in three categories. Conacher places first with four gamewinning goals, second with 1.55 points per game and third with 0.75 goals per game. 4 The junior also ranks 15th in assists per game (0.72) and 17th in power play tallies (five). 4 In addition, Conacher leads all Atlantic Hockey players in points, goals and game-winning goals. His streak is the longest by a Griff since Chris Duggan finished the 2001-02 season by tallying a point in 15-straight games. 4 The junior has recorded a point in every game since Nov. 20, posting 20 points during the 10-game run. 4 Overall, Conacher has recorded at least one point in 16-of-20 games this season and has not been shut out in consecutive games all year.

The Black Knights won games of 4-1 and 7-2. 4The teams split in their last meeting in Buffalo, with Canisius winning the opener, 2-0, and the Black Knights rallying for the 4-3 victory in the finale. 4Overall, Army is unbeaten in its last five games against the Griffs, going 4-0-1 during that span. ABOUT THE BLACK KNIGHTS 4Army is currently sixth in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 14 points, going 6-6-2 in league play. The Black Knights are 7-10-3 overall this season. 4Army is 0-2-1 in its last three games after winning its previous four contests. 4The Black Knights have struggled on the road this season, going just 2-8-2 away from West Point this year. 4The team has been led offensively by junior Cody Omilusik this season. Omilusik has recorded 22 points on a team-best 13 goals and nine assists. He ranks second in Atlantic Hockey with his 13 goals plus third with five power-play scores. 4Senior Eric Sefchik ranks second on the team with 17 points, scoring four goals and adding a team-high 13 helpers. 4Junior Jay Clark has anchored the defense between the pipes. He ranks second in Atlantic Hockey with a save percentage of.915 and fifth with a goals against average of 2.85. DOWN TO THE WIRE 4A common theme to recent Canisius games is how the game isn t determined until the end. 4In five of the Griffs last six games, the game-winning goal has been scored with 5:11 left in regulation or later. 4In fact, a lead with just over five minutes remaining in regulation isn t safe. During the six-game run the team leading with 5:30 left in the game is just 1-2-1 with the other two contests being tied with 5:30 left. 4Despite games being decided so late, comebacks after two periods are not common. Canisius is 5-0-1 when leading after two this season and 0-9-0 when trailing heading into the final period. HUDSON GETS OFFENSIVE 4Since first arriving on campus, senior Carl Hudson has shown that offense is his specialty. 4This season, Hudson ranks sixth nationally among defensemen with 0.95 points per game, recording 20 points on six goals and a career-best 14 assists. 4Hudson also leads all Atlantic Hockey defenders this season with his 20 points. 4During his career, Hudson has set or tied five of the program s Division I career records. 4The senior ranks first in a number of career offensive categories by a Griff defender. He owns the school marks for most points by a blueliner (76), most goals (36) and most assists (40). 4Hudson has nearly three times as many goals as the next highest Griff blueliner (36 to 14) and nearly double the points (76 to 42). 4The defender is also first among all players in power-play goals (23) and game-winning goals (9). 4Hudson also owns the school s marks for season goals by a defender (14) and season game-winning goals (5), set during the 2008-09 campaign. 4Last season, Hudson became the first Canisius defender to earn all-conference accolades in 10 years, earning third-team honors. MOSER ANCHORS PENALTY KILL UNIT 4 In the third period of a 2-2 deadlock against Bentley in the Griffs last game, sophomore Scott Moser stepped up and anchored an impressive penalty kill unit for Canisius. 4 Moser led a unit that successfully killed all five power plays it faced during the third stanza, including four-straight minutes of a Bentley power play and two minutes of 5-on-3 action. 4 During its five extra-man opportunities, Canisius allowed only two shots on goal. 4 Moser, alone, blocked seven shots during the contest to help the Griffs earn the victory. 4 The third period was a much needed boost to the Griffs penalty kill unit. Prior to that final frame, Canisius opponents had converted 42.3 percent (11-26) of their extra-man chances in the last three-plus games. 4 Moser has also contributed on the offensive side this season, posting career highs with nine points and seven assists. ROOKIE REWARD 4 Freshman Preston Shupe has stepped up as of late and has contributed to the Griffs success as a rookie in 2009-10. 4 Shupe, who has posted a point in a season-best five-straight games, recorded four points last weekend against Bentley. He netted his first career multi-goal game in the opener and then tallied the primary assist on two scores, including the game-winning goal with 2:40 left, in the finale. 4 Shupe has also contributed in other ways this season. He teamed with sophomore Scott Moser to anchor the Griffs penalty kill unit in the finale against Bentley. He also won three faceoffs with under 20 seconds left to help preserve the victory. 4 For the season, Shupe has recorded 17 points on four goals and 13 assists. He currently leads all Atlantic Hockey freshmen with his 17 points. CON-VINCING COMBINATION 4 Juniors Cory Conacher and Vincent Scarsella have been on the same page this season and have provided much-needed offense for the Griffs. 4 Conacher leads the team with 31 points and 15 goals this season to go along with 16 assists. Scarsella has registered 25 points on eight goals and a team-best 17 helpers. 4 The linemates are the only pair of teammates to both rank in the Atlantic Hockey top five for scoring. Conacher currently ranks first with 31 points, while Scarsella is fourth with 25. 4 They have each other to thank for their success this season. Of their 23 goals, the other has assisted on 17 of the scores. FIRST-PERIOD IMPORTANCE 4 Canisius has found out how important it is to get off to a quick start this season. 4 Canisius is 8-0-1 when leading at the end of one period this season. On the reverse side, Canisius is 0-8-1 when trailing heading into the first intermission. 4 The Griffs have allowed at least two goals in the first period in nine of their 10 losses this season. 4 Canisius is outscoring teams 16-3 during the opening frame in games it wins. In losses, the Griffs are being outscored 19-4. Hudson in the Division I Record Book Career Points By a Defender G A Pts 1. Carl Hudson (2006- ) 36 40 76 2. The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called The Hounds of Zeus in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. WEEKS HEATS UP AS HE REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE 4 Jason Weeks is not content to rank among the best in school history in just one category. Weeks aims to put his name in the record book in a number of different categories. 4 Last weekend, Weeks became the fifth player in the program s Division I history to record his 100th career point. Career Goals 4 The senior now turns his attention toward the program s career goals standard. Weeks has totaled 47 career scores, just two shy of the mark set by David Deeves during the 1998-99 season. Career Assists 4 Weeks currently ranks in the top 10 of five different categories in the school s Division I record book. 4 He also places seventh in career assists (53), fourth in career power play goals (16) and first in career Career Power Play Goals short-handed goals (six). 4 This season, Weeks has totaled 15 points on six goals and nine assists in 20 games. 4 The good news for the Griffs is that Weeks is just Career Short Handed Goals starting to heat up. The senior has recorded nine points (2g, 7a) in the last five games after recording just six points (4g, 2a) in his first 15 contests. HEIDINGER REWRITES CANISIUS RECORD BOOK 4With two assists against AIC, senior Josh Heidinger joined an elite class in the program s history. 4Heidinger became the fourth player in Canisius Division I history to record his 100th career point. He now stands third in the school s record book with 107 career points. 4The senior is just 12 points shy of the program s career record. David Deeves holds the mark with 119 points from 1998 to 2002. 4Heidinger also moved to the top of the career assists ledger. He has now accumulated 74 career helpers, four more than Deeves recorded (1998-2002). 4Through 24 games this season, Heidinger has posted 14 points, seven goals and seven assists. MORRISON AND LOEWEN RECORD SHUTOUTS 4 Sophomore Dan Morrison and senior Andrew Loewen have each taken their turn anchoring the Canisius defense during the 2009-10 season. 4 Morrison has recorded three shutouts during his sophomore campaign, the second-most in the country this season. Only Denver s Marc Cheverie has blanked a team more with five. 4 Morrison s three shutouts are also tied for the most in the program s Division I history, while his four career clean slates are tied for third. 4 Morrison recorded 48 saves in a 1-0 victory over CCHA foe Ferris State on Oct. 10. 4 The 48 saves are the most by a Griff in a shutout, topping the previous mark of 46, set by Sean Weaver on Feb. 4, 2000. 4 Loewen registered his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 blanking of AIC. 4 The shutout marked the sixth for the senior during his career, tying the program s all-time Division I record. Canisius is now 2-5-1 all-time against the conference, including a 2-0-1 mark during the last two seasons. 4 Canisius also defeated Ferris State earlier in the season for their second all-time victory against a CCHA team. 4 The Griffs and Bentley are the only two Atlantic Hockey schools to defeat a team in two other conferences this season. CONACHER NAMED ATLANTIC HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE MONTH 4 Junior Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month in November after leading the Canisius offense. 4 Conacher recorded a team-best 13 points, eight goals and four power-play tallies during the month, helping the Griffs to a 5-3-1 record. 4 His highlights during the month included scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty shot versus Mercyhurst with just 5:36 remaining. He also posted his best collegiate weekend against AIC, registering six points, four goals and two assists in a sweep. 4 Conacher finished the month by scoring a goal in four-straight games, the longest streak in his career. CONACHER MATCHES A PAIR OF SCHOOL RECORDS 4 Cory Conacher picked up in December right where he left off in November, matching a pair of school records. 4 In the Griffs 9-3 victory versus Bentley, Conacher set career highs with five points, netting the game-winning goal and adding four assists. 4 Conacher became the third player in the school s Division I history to record five points in a single game. Chris Duggan (March 13, 1999) and Mike Ruberto (Oct. 9, 2005) also accomplished the feat. 4 Conacher also tied the program s record with four assists in a game, matching the standard set by four players -- Duggan (March 13, 1999), Joel Tarvudd (Jan. 8, 2000), David Deeves (Nov. 2, 2001) and current teammate Jason Weeks (Nov. 1, 2008). 4 Earlier in the season, Conacher also matched a school record by recording the ninth hat trick in the program s Division I history. CONACHER NETS PROGRAM S NINTH HAT TRICK 4 Junior Cory Conacher wasted no time making an impact in the 2009-10 season. GRIFFS EARN FIRST SWEEP VERSUS MERCYHURST 4 The Griffs two wins against Mercyhurst was a historic first for the Canisius College hockey program, marking the first time that the Griffs swept a weekend series from their rivals. 4 Canisius has played Mercyhurst more than any other school in program s history. The sweep was the first for the Griffs in the 60-game, 21-year series. 4 The Griffs also won consecutive games for the first time against the Lakers since Dec. 2, 1996 and Jan. 19, 1996. Canisius needed to play Mercyhurst 39 times at the Division I level before winning consecutive games in the rivalry. OFFENSIVE OUTBURST 4Canisius got out a lot of frustration in a 9-3 victory over Bentley on Dec. 5. 4The Griffs dominating victory not only ended the team s three-game losing streak but also ended Bentley s hold over Canisius. The Falcons had won 7-of-8 meetings in the last two seasons. 4The nine goals for Canisius are tied for the second most in the program s Division I history and the most since a 9-2 win over Bentley on Nov. 2, 2001. 4Junior Cory Conacher tied school records with five points and four assists in the victory to lead the Canisius offense. 4In total, seven Griffs scored a goal in the win, while 13 players registered a point.

GRIFFS RECEIVE FIRST NATIONAL VOTE 4 Following Canisius split against CCHA foe Ferris State, Canisius earned a vote in the USCHO.com/ CBS College Sports Division I poll. 4 The vote was the first for the Griffs in the program s history. MOSER DOUBLES UP 4Freshman Scott Moser will not only be competing for the Canisius hockey team this season, but the sophomore will also be a member of the golf team while hockey is in the offseason. 4Last season, Moser recorded eight points on three goals and five assists in 23 games. He has played in all 22 games for the Griffs this season, scoring two goals and adding seven assists. RETURNING OFFENSIVE FORCE 4 The Griffs return four players in Jason Weeks, Cory Conacher, Josh Heidinger and Dave Kostuch that all posted at least 30 points during the 2008-09 season. 4 It marks the first time since moving to Division I that Canisius returns four players that had posted at least 30 points the previous season. 4 Canisius is also one of just four schools in the country this season to return four 30-point scorers. The three other schools are preseason top-ranked Denver, No. 8 Yale and RIT. 4 In total, Canisius returns 87 percent of its scoring from last season and all three goaltenders. CANISIUS RETURNS EXPERIENCED CLUB 4The Griffs welcome back one of the most experienced teams in the country this season. 4Canisius returns 22 letterwinners from the 2008-09 season, 18 of which are upperclassmen. 4The 18 returning upperclassmen this season are the most of any team in the country. Massachusetts-Lowell, Princeton and Vermont all rank second with 17 returning upperclassmen. 4Of the 18 returning upperclassmen, eight are seniors and 10 are juniors this season. MACDOUGALL RETURNS AS TEAM CAPTAIN 4For the second-straight season, senior Peter MacDougall will serve as the team s captain. 4MacDougall is the fifth Griff to wear the C in two different seasons since the program moved to the Division I level. 4During the 2008-09 campaign, MacDougall appeared in all 37 games and recorded a career-high 11 points (2g, 9a). 4Seniors Dave Cianfrini and Josh Heidinger will serve as the team s assistant captains. Heidinger will wear the A for the second-consecutive season. GRIFFS SLATED TO FINISH FIFTH 4Canisius was picked to finish fifth in the annual Atlantic Hockey preseason poll. 4The Griffs picked up 53 points in the poll, just one point behind fourth-place Holy Cross. 4Two-time defending league champion Air Force was picked to win the league, earning 8-of-10 first-place votes. Mercyhurst, the 2008 and 2009 runner-up, was picked second and received the other two first-place votes. 4The Griffs finished the 2008-09 season in fifth place. Most Returning Upperclassmen 1. Adams and Scott Gray join the Canisius coaching staff in 2009. 4Adams joins the Griffs after spending the last three seasons as a player/coach with the Port Huron Icehawks. Adams will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will work closely with the Griffs defensemen. 4Gray is a recent graduate of New England College and his main focus will be with the goaltenders. 4Sean Schmidt also joins the Griffs from Ferris State as the team s equipment manager. NIAGARA AND ROBERT MORRIS TO JOIN ATLANTIC HOCKEY 4 The Atlantic Hockey Association will have a new look next season. Niagara and Robert Morris are both set to join the league beginning next season. 4 The two teams are current member of the CHA. 4 Canisius and Niagara are local rivals and compete annually in the Battle of the Bridge series. Niagara holds an 8-5-1 edge in the series since the two teams moved to Division I. 4 The Griffs and Colonials have split four all-time meetings with each team winning twice. 4 Beginning in the 2010-11, Atlantic Hockey will have 12 competing teams. The league will remain one league but will be spit into geographical divisions for schedule purposes only. Canisius will play each team in its own division three times and teams from the other division twice.

Dave Smith Head Coach Fifth Season The Ohio State University 92 Dave Smith is in his fifth season as head coach of the Canisius College hockey program and 12th season as a coach at the Division I level. During the 2008-09 season, Smith led the Griffs to a number of firsts, which garnered national attention. Canisius swept a pair of games against eventual NCAA quarterfinalist and 15th-ranked Air Force, marking the first victories for the Griffs against a nationally-ranked opponent. Canisius also earned its first wins against a CCHA and ECAC school during the season. On an individual level, Dave Kostuch led all freshmen nationally in goals per game, earning Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year accolades. Kostuch was also recognized as the National Rookie of the Month in October. In addition, Carl Hudson and Jason Weeks were honored with All-Atlantic Hockey accolades, becoming the first Canisius skaters to earn all-conference honors in 10 seasons. The achievements under Smith is not limited to just the 2008-09 campaign. In his first four seasons leading the Golden Griffin program, he has guided numerous student-athletes to success both on and off the ice. The Griffs have collected athletic honors and academic honors as well as enjoying successful careers after graduation. The highlights include: Seven Griffs have signed professional contracts after playing under Smith at Canisius. Smith has mentored a total of seven student-athletes that have been honored at the Atlantic Hockey postseason banquet. David Kasch was named the league s Best Defensive Forward following the 2007-08 season to go along with Kostuch s Rookie of the Year award. Smith has also excelled on the recruiting front during his tenure at Canisius, capped by Kostuch s performance last season. His first full recruiting class earned 12 league honors during the 2006-07 season, including 10 Rookie of the Week honors, which were the most of any Division I school in the country, while Smith s second recruiting class included the top two scoring freshmen in Atlantic Hockey. At least one player in each of Smith s four years has been named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team. The Griffs have set or tied 17 school records under Smith s leadership, including seven during the 2008-09 season. During the 2007-08 campaign, Andrew Loewen recorded a 201-minute shutout streak, the 10th-longest run in NCAA history. In his four seasons, 57 Griffs have earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic accolades, including a school-record 18 following the 2008-09 campaign. In addition, Max Buetow was named the Atlantic Hockey Top Scholar Athlete in 2005-06 for owning the top GPA in the league and Loewen has twice been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team. Smith became the program s third head coach on April 15, 2005 after serving the previous three seasons as the associate coach and recruiting coordinator at fellow Atlantic Hockey member Mercyhurst College. Smith also spent time as an assistant coach with Bowling Green and Miami. The Arthur, Ontario, native was also instrumental in guiding Mercyhurst to two league championships and two NCAA Division I Tournament appearances in his three seasons with the Lakers. Smith graduated from The Ohio State University in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in journalism/ public relations and was a four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes. Smith finished his career at Ohio State with 140 points, ranking 14th all-time. He was selected as team captain as a junior and chosen as the team s MVP as a senior, while leading the Buckeyes with 41 assists and 63 points. After graduating from Ohio State, Smith spent six seasons in professional hockey, including five full seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) and the International Hockey League (IHL) and a brief period in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He was under contract with the New York Rangers in 1994-95. Smith has spent his summers coaching young players and adults as a director and head instructor at numerous camps across the United States and Canada.
