BOSTON RED SOX (27-32) at DETROIT TIGERS (31-25) Friday, June 6, 2014 7:08 p.m. ET Comerica Park, Detroit, MI RHP Rubby De La Rosa (1-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Drew Smyly (2-4, 4.10) Game #60 Road Game #28 TV: NESN/MLBN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) STATE OF THE SOX: The Red Sox were off yesterday after dropping a 7-4 decision in Cleveland on Wednesday night, a walk-off loss in 12 innings that followed a 2 hour and 28 minute rain delay at the start of the game...it was the Sox 6th walk-off loss of the year, 1 shy of their 2013 total (7)...Boston was swept in the 3 game series after winning 7 straight from 5/26-6/1. At 27-32, Boston is 5 games under.500, in 4th place in the AL East, a season-high 9.0 games back in the division, and 4.0 games back in the race for the AL s 2nd Wild Card playoff berth. Boston is 7-3 in its last 10 games...in the majors only Toronto has a better mark in its last 10 (8-2). The Sox lead the AL with 20 games decided by 1 run (7-13)...They also top the AL with 13, 1-run losses. The club has won more series than it has lost, going 10-9-1 in series play. YESTERDAY OFF: Yesterday marked the club s only offday in a 37-day stretch from 5/20-6/25...Boston is 16 days and 16 games into that 36-game stretch (7-9 thus far)...the Sox won t be off again until 6/26, 3 weeks from yesterday, on the road between stops in Seattle and New York. ALL SWEEPS: Each of the Red Sox last 7 series played from 5/9 have ended in sweeps, with Boston being swept 4 times and sweeping the opponent 3 times...this stretch began when the Tigers won all 3 at Fenway Park from 5/9-11. STREAKY SOX: Boston has lost 3 straight games since a season-long 7-game winning streak, which was the club s 1st win streak longer than 2 games in 2014...The win streak followed a 10-game drought from 5/15-25, which was the club s longest skid since dropping 11 in a row, 6/8-19/94. SINCE THE SLIDE: Boston has gone 7-3 in its last 10 games since ending a 10-game losing streak...in these last 10 games, the Sox have outscored opponents 45-30...4 of the 7 wins have been comeback victories, with 2 walkoffs. Boston pitchers have a 2.96 ERA (30 ER/91.1 IP) during the streak, with 83 strikeouts compared to just 28 walks allowed. Relievers have a 1.53 ERA (5 ER/29.1 IP), allowing just 22 hits (.212 AVG)...Sox starters have no more than 3 runs in 8 of the 10 games. The Sox have hit.261 (91-for-348) with 19 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 38 BB, and a.347 OBP in this 10-game span. ROSTER MACHINATIONS: Tuesday marked the 1st time the Sox did not make a roster move since last Thursday...In all, the Sox made 11 roster moves in 13 days from 5/21-6/2. The team had only 10 roster moves in the first 51 days of the season prior to that stretch. ON THE OFFENSE: The Red Sox offense has drawn 228 walks this season, 2nd most in the AL behind OAK (259)... The club has the 4th-best OBP in the AL (.328). Red Sox batters have reached base an ML-high 334 times on 2-strike counts, including an AL-best 210 hits with 2 strikes (COL, 212). The Sox are averaging 4.03 pitches/pa, 2nd most in the majors to MIN (4.08). SOUTHPAW SPECIAL: Boston, facing LHP Drew Smyly tonight, is 13-8 (.619) when facing a lefty starter and 14-24 (.368) when opposing a righty. Overall in 2014, Boston has drawn 85 walks against left-handers, 13 more than the 2nd team on that list (OAK, 72)...Jonny Gomes leads MLB with 15 walks against left-handed pitching, while Mike Napoli and Dustin Pedroia are tied for 2nd in the AL with 13 walks against lefties. Dustin Pedroia tops the AL (T-1st in MLB) with 9 doubles off southpaws. TIGERS TALK: Tonight the Red Sox and Tigers open a 3-game series in Detroit, their only 3 games here in 2014... This series closes out the teams 6-game season set, which opened with a 3-game sweep by the Tigers at Fenway Park 3 weeks ago, from 5/16-18. Despite going 8-12 against the Tigers beginning in 2012, Boston owns the AL s best regular season record against the Tigers since 2008 at 27-19 (.587), with the Angels next at 30-24 (.556). The Red Sox have dropped 7 of their last 8 regular season games here beginning with the 2nd game of a doubleheader on 5/29/11, but are 11-10 in Detroit since the start of the 2008 season. DAVID DIGS DETROIT: David Ortiz has hit 18 home runs at Comerica Park, tied with Paul Konerko for the most ever as a visitor at this ballpark, with Ortiz s coming in only 49 games, less than half of Konkero s 115 games here. Ortiz s.667 SLG, 1.080 OPS, and 10.0 AB/HR ratio at Comerica Park are all the best marks in Comerica Park history (min. 150 PA). GREG COLBRUNN: Red Sox Hitting Coach Greg Colbrunn was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic Wednesday night after experiencing dizziness prior to the Red Sox game against the Indians...After evaluation, it was determined that Greg had suffered subarachnoid hemorrhage...red Sox medical director Dr. Larry Ronan and physicians from the Cleveland Clinic expect Greg to make a good recovery...for the next few days, he will remain in Cleveland for further evaluation. Red Sox Minor League Hitting Coordinator Tim Hyers is expected to fill in with the Red Sox major league staff for the time being. DRAFT IS ON: Last night the Red Sox selected SS Michael Chavis out of Sprayberry (GA) High School with their 1stround pick (26th overall) in the 2014 June Draft...The righthanded hitter batted.580 (47-for-81) with 9 2B, 3B, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 21 SB in 28 games this year and was named 2014 Georgia Gatorade High School Player of the Year. The club also took RHP Michael Kopech from Mt. Pleasant (TX) High School in the 1st round (33rd overall, compensation for Jacoby Ellsbury), and 1B Sam Travis from Indiana University with their 2ndround selection (67th overall). The 2014 June Draft continues today beginning at 1:00 p.m...boston is expected to make 8 more picks in rounds 3-10. REMEMBERING ZIM: The Red Sox mourn the loss of former skipper Don Zimmer, who passed away at age 83 on Wednesday after 66 years in professional baseball...zimmer was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2010. Zimmer compiled a 411-304 (.575) record over parts of 5 seasons at the helm of the Red Sox from 1976-80, the 2nd-best mark in franchise history among those who managed the club longer than 2 years (Joe McCarthy,.606). In 1977, his 1st full season piloting the Red Sox, the club lost 9 in a row from 6/24-7/3 but went on to win 97 games. INK IN THE PEN: Red Sox relievers rank 2nd in the AL with a 2.81 ERA (59 ER/188.1 IP) this season (OAK, 2.67)...The Sox have dropped just 9 games this season after taking a lead, tied with the Giants and Padres for the fewest in MLB. Burke Badenhop has gone 25.0 consecutive IP without allowing an earned run (1 run allowed in that stretch, which began with his 2nd inning of work on 4/18)... He leads MLB relievers with 9 opponent GIDP, already the most by a Red Sox relief pitcher since 2008, when Javier Lopez and Justin Masterson each totaled 11. Koji Uehara has converted his last 27 save chances in the regular season beginning on 7/9/13, the longest active streak in MLB.
