What's Up September 2015? In a world where we see a three-year old child die in the water and be washed up on shore, our hearts pour out to the tens of thousands of children (and adults) risking their lives by escaping from oppression. As teachers, recreation leaders, and health providers it is hard to understand what we can do. One thing we can do is to promoting fun, active participation for all children that we are responsible for. When we add meaningful joy to the lives of children, provide physically active movement, help children learn about physical literacy, and be a place where every child and adult feels secure, we do a lot. Blessings on the year ahead as you strive to do that in the intramural, physical education, recreation, and other programs you lead. John Byl Manipulative (TGFU) skills in Peel Dodgeball in Peel--fun, active, all... With thanks to our Partner and Champion of Healthy Active Play. 1

Most recently we added: CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP Equipment: screaming rubber chickens, pool noodles, gator skin balls, bean bags, inner tubes or hula hoops Objective: Create a pot of chicken noodle soup How to play: Create 4 teams and assign each team a tube/hula hoop (boiling pot of water) Teams stand a challenging distance from the boiling pot of water so that throwing any of the listed items will be fun and require accuracy Students take turns throwing the items or ingredients into the pot to create chicken noodle soup: o Rubber chicken- students squeeze the chicken! 2

o o Gator balls and Bean bags- spices Pool noodles- noodles Any items that don t land in the pot must be picked up and returned to the next person in line http://www.ciraontario.com/chickennoodlesoup TOP IT UP Equipment: Empty tennis cans, a load of bean bags, and gator skin balls Objective: Knock down the other team s can s while protecting your own Setting up: How to Play: Create a boundary line to ensure that no tennis cans are set up close to a wall or corner Players are divided into teams of 2 and each places a can down that they must protect Players throw gator skin balls to knock down the other team s tennis can s A player/team may only throw a ball to knock down the can of another player/team when their own can is standing When a can is knocked down a player must go and get a bean bag to stack on top of their tennis can The game is over when there s no more bean bags Variation: After a while, stop the game and teams can relocate to a new spot http://www.ciraontario.com/topitup 3

GATOR SOCCER Equipment: A large marked circle using cones, homemade bugs, gator balls Objective: Try and get the bug through the opponent s goal by throwing gator balls at it Creating the bug : How to play: Bugs can be made from the stuff found in your storage room, or with a little effort, some of the discarded pieces of equipment nobody wants Here is an example: cut a basketball in half, fill the inside with a scrap gator ball and screw this top to a scooter board or a homemade base and there you have a bug! Divide the class into four teams around the outside circle Each team should have ¼ of the circle divided by cones Each team has a goal on the outside of the circle on their area All players throw gator balls at the bug to try and get it through their opponents goal 4

BUG BALL Equipment: A large marked circle using cones, homemade bugs, gator balls Objective: Try and get the bug through the opponent s goal by throwing gator balls at it Creating the bug : How to play: Bugs can be made from the stuff found in your storage room, or with a little effort, some of the discarded pieces of equipment nobody wants Here is an example: cut a basketball in half, fill the inside with a scrap gator ball and screw this top to a scooter board or a homemade base and there you have a bug! RPS TAG Equipment: A pool noodle for every pair Objective: Win RPS with your partner and then try and catch them and whack them with the pool noodle before they make it to the safety line How to play: Everyone picks a partner and places a pool noodle on the ground between them There is a safety line approximately 5 metres away (with sufficient distance from the wall so players do not run into the wall) The two players play RPS and the loser runs to the safety line The winner only scores a point if he/she picks up the noodle and wacks the loser before he/she crosses the safety line Repeat until a pre-determined time Determine who has scored the most points http://www.ciraontario.com/rpstag 6

EVEN MORE GAMES :) BEAN BAG GAMES: AIR HOCKEY KNOCKDOWN (10 PIN BOWLING) Players slide a bean bag down a table (or a longer tile/wood floor-- hallway) at ten partially filled water bottles lined up as bowling pins-- each pin knocked down is worth one point. Players get three tries to knock down as many as possible. Adapted from Lindsay Canales and Rebecca Lytle. Physical Activities for Young People with Severe Disabilities. Follow this link: http://www.ciraontario.com/beanbaggames DODGEBALL GAMES: BOUNCEBALL (PLAYWORKS) Before You Start: Demonstrate what a one bounce throw is. It is a throw that hits the ground one time and then strikes another player. Set Up: Game can be played outside or in a gym. Designate a safe area with enough room for kids to move. How to Play: Students are free to run around the area (gym, outside within boundaries, etc) as they please. When a student picks up a ball they must stop moving and their feet become frozen. Students throw the balls at other players using the one bounce throw. If a student gets hit by a ball that has been one bounced they must sit down where they got hit. Students that are sitting are not out of the game, they attempt to get balls as they roll past them. If they get a ball, they may throw it, while still sitting down, at a player that is standing. If they hit the standing player, the sitter gets to stand up and the player that got hit will sit down. 8

Play continues this way for the rest of the game. Make sure to emphasize that you may not move if you have a ball and that you should not move while sitting down to get a ball. Variations: For younger students, if a player gets hit, they can simply do 5 jumping jacks and then return to the game. Dodgeball Games - Over 25 Dodgeball games to choose from Follow this link: http://www.ciraontario.com/dodgeball HIDE AND SEEK GAMES: INDOOR MARCO POLO (PLAYWORKS) Before you start: Choose one player to be it and another player to be his/her guide. Have the rest of players spread out in the space and review that they are walking, not running. Review the boundaries with the players. Set Up: Small area or classroom How to Play: The player that is it closes his/her eyes and calls out Marco and all the other students respond Polo. The player that is it moves toward the rest of the students, trying to tag them, with help from the guide, who places his/her hands on the shoulders of the student that s it and directs him/her away from objects throughout the room. When someone is tagged, the player who was it becomes the new guide. Variations: To increase difficulty, the guide can talk the person around obstacles instead of using his/her hands on shoulders. Hide and Seek Games - Check out this link for a bunch of fun hide and seek games on our website. http://www.ciraontario.com/hideandseek 9

HULA HOOP GAMES: BIRD S NEST (PLAYWORKS) Before You Start: Make sure everyone understand the importance of safety, control and awareness Review the rules of the game and have the group explain the game to you Set Up: Arrange five hula hoops (birds' nests) about 25 feet apart in a square with one hoop in the center. Place the beanbags (the eggs) in the center hoop. Divide players into four teams and each team line up behind their assigned a hoop/birds' nest. How to Play: Each team s goal is to get six bean bags in their hoops. When told to start, the first person on each team runs to the center to grab a bean bag (one per turn). Player returns to his or her line and places it in their hula hoop; then the next player goes. Players keep taking bean bags from the center hoop until empty, at which point players can take bean bags from each other s hula hoops. Players cannot defend their own hula hoop. Game ends when one team has six bean bags. Variations: Rename the eggs and bird's nest, such as trees and acorns or cookies and cookie jars. Allow players to defend their hula hoop by tagging opponents. Once tagged, the player must return to his or her line and the next player may go. There are over 10 fun Hula Hoop Games to try out at this link: http://www.ciraontario.com/hulahoops 10

30 MASS ACTIVITIES GAMES: CAPTURE THE FLAG (PLAYWORKS) Before You Start: Divide into two teams. Make sure everyone understand all rules and know where the boundaries are located. Demonstrate safe tagging: light touch, like a butterfly wings, on the back or shoulder. Unsafe tags: hard contact that might cause the person being tagged to fall. Set Up: Divide the playing field in half and designate two small zones on both sides to hold people who are tagged. There can also be a designated circle on each side where the flag is placed. How to Play: Each team tries to take the other team s flag and return across the center line without being tagged. When guarding the flag zone or the holding zone, a defender must be at least 2 away from the zone boundaries. If a player is tagged while on their opponent s side they are must go to the holding zone on their opponent s side. If a player who has stolen the flag is tagged, the flag is returned to the flag zone, and the player goes to the zone. A player can be freed from the holding zone when a teammate crosses the center line and tags the player; both players then receive a free walk back to their side. A player can only free one teammate at a time. If an opposing player can get both feet into the flag zone without being tagged, they can remain there without safely (without getting tagged) before attempting to cross the center line. Variations: Limit the number of players allowed in the circle at one time. Allow a player in the circle to throw the flag to a teammate. The flag must still be carried over the center line however. The players in the tagged zone can join hands and reach out of the zone to make it easier to be freed. Similarly, all players in the holding zone are freed when a player makes it across to rescue them. For extended games, allow players to hide their flags in plain sight in a designated area. NOODLE GAMES: ANCIENT SPEER THROWER http://www.ciraontario.com/spears Game Objective: To out-duel your opponents with accurate throws Skills and Concepts: Overhand throw Strategies and Tactics: Equipment: When throwing overhand, stand with feet apart, facing sideways with weight on the back foot. Foot opposite to the throwing arm is forward. Rotate to face the target, transferring weight onto the front foot while throwing. O A half length of pool noodle. Set Up: Instructions: Divide the group into two equal teams with the players lining up facing each other about ten to twenty metres apart. Provide each player with a pool noodle. The groups start by giving each other the stare down and then start slowly walking towards each other like in the Showdown at the OK Corral (a demonstration may be necessary). On a signal (you can say draw ), all the players throw their noodles at the same time When players are hit, they can die dramatic and noisy deaths. After the round is over, all players that were hit join the other team. Question for Understanding: How was it easiest to throw the noodle accurately?
