Arden Club Calendar www.ardenclub.org 302 475-3126 2126 The Highway, Arden, DE 19810 Dec/Jan 2015 Printed on 100% post-consumer fiber paper. SHAKESPEARE GILD Young Actors Workshop It s time for another round of budding Bard lovers to practice the craft with our adult actors. Registration will be Saturday, December 5 at 1PM in the Upper Gild Hall. Children between the ages of 6 and 18 are welcome to register at this time. Brief auditions will be held. Workshop rehearsal dates are January 9, 16, 23, 30 and February 6, between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Showcase Performance will be Sunday, February 14 at 2 PM. Cost is $30 per child; $50 maximum per family. For more information about registration, see the Shakespeare Gild page on the Ardenclub.org website or contact Mary Catherine Kelley at mckelley@comcast.net. Exciting News! Auditions for Troilus and Cressida Auditions for Shakespeare s Troilus and Cressida will be held on Monday, January 25 and Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Callbacks will be held on Thursday, January 28. Optional prepared monologues of 1-2 minutes will be heard beginning at 7 PM. Monologues do not have to be from Troilus and Cressida or even from Shakespeare. Any piece that demonstrates your acting skills is fine. And, again, monologues are entirely optional. Auditions by cold readings from the play, including monologues, will begin at 7:30; sides will be available for perusal at 7 PM. Rehearsals will begin in April, and run on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Performance dates are June 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, and 25. The show is directed by Jim Ewald. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity behind the scenes, please contact Laura Wallace or Mary Catherine Kelley.

ARDENSINGERS GILD H.M.S. Pinafore Kickoff Rehearsals for our Spring 2016 show, Gilbert and Sullivan s H.M.S. Pinafore, begin with our kickoff rehearsal and party on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at 2 PM. Current, former, and prospective Ardensingers are welcome to join us. Rehearsals will be held on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:30 and Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00. Performances will be April 22, 23, 29, & 30, 2016 at 8 PM and April 24 & 30 at 2 PM. Captain Corcoran has prospered as captain of the H.M.S. Pinafore, and hopes to further improve the family's societal standing by making a marriage match for his daughter Josephine with Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Josephine is conflicted, because she's fallen in love with a "common" sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, while Sir Joseph's attentions "nauseate" her. She finally sets her mind on eloping with Ralph, after hearing Sir Joseph lecture the captain and crew that "a British sailor is any man's equal" (excepting his). Everything is sorted out in typical topsy-turvy G&S fashion, with the captain, Josephine, and Sir Joseph ending up with appropriate marriage partners. Issues of social class are the target of Gilbert's wit in this production, accompanied by some of Sullivan's most memorable music. Stage direction will be by Sam Griffin, with music direction by Helene Furlong. This show benefits from a large chorus of sailors and sisters, cousins, and aunts. To express interest in joining the chorus, please contact John Trexler at Ardensingers@gmail.com or 484-319-2350. We d also welcome help on our production and business committees. Drummer s Circle The Arden Drummer s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month at 1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often take the place of the monthly event. This December is one of those special events. We will be hosting "An evening event for Drummers, Twirlers, and Dancers, at 8 PM Saturday, December 19 in the Main Hall of the Gild Hall. BYOB. Donations are accepted and encouraged to help the Club's building renovations fund. To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to Allan Kleban, amkleban@yahoo.com. People on this list will be notified by e-mail if times or dates change, or if another performance in the Upper Gild Hall prevents us from playing. Also see our Facebook site, Arden Drum Circle, for more information. 2 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR DEC/JAN 2015

In the middle of winter, we will spend some time reviewing our past gardening successes and challenges, and we will share our ideas and gardening plans for the New Year. Please bring your favorite seed catalogs, your extra special seeds, your favorite and most indispensable gardening tool, your special preserved garden produce, or other inspiring gardening-related item. We will take turns sharing experiences and ideas so that we may learn more about gardening and about our community. CONCERT GILD The Spring Standards Boxing Day! (Sure to sell out!) December 26, 2015, 8:00 PM. James, Heather and James first discovered their shared love of music as teenagers, singing '70s rock in the car driving around on back roads along the Delaware/ Pennsylvania border. That connection has carried them through ups and downs, in and out of one another's lives over the years and miles, to their current home of Brooklyn, NY. Opening will be The McTell Brothers AND The Tall Pines. WXPN Welcomes Robyn Hitchcock (Sure to sell out!) January 23, 2016, 8:00 PM. Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist, and musician's musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock's father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration). Opening will be Emma Swift (who will also sing with Robyn during his set). LIBRARY GILD Meet the Authors Please join us in the Library after dinner on Saturday, December 12 to meet local authors Marisa de los Santos and David Teague when they discuss their newest book Connect the Stars. Starting in January, on Saturdays after dinner, guest readers will share their favorite stories with the children. It s a cozy time with a book in front of the fire. New Books for New Hours Just a reminder that we have new library hours on Thursdays: We are now open in the afternoon from 3:30 to 5 PM, so stop in and enjoy one of our new books. SCHOLARS GILD Tuesday, December 15, 7:30 PM Lower Gild Hall Forecasts for This Decade and the Next In the past few years, we've seen rising distrust in public institutions, unpopular wars, and lackluster economic growth. Why does it feel like we are repeating the 1970s? We may be experiencing a 40- year cultural cycle that goes back (at least) to the 1850s and offers some useful insights into what to expect for the 2020s and beyond. Please join the Scholars Gild at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, December 15, when our discussion, led by Mr. James (Jim) H. Lee, will look backwards to see what is coming in the future. This should be a very interesting and lively presentation and discussion. Mr. Lee is the founder of Strategic Foresight Investments (StratFI). He is a Delaware-based investment advisor distinguished by his expertise in emerging technologies and social trends. In addition, he is a member of the Association of Professional Futurists; www.stratfi.com. The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) in the Lower Gild Hall. If you would like to receive email notifications and reminders, contact the Scholars Gild via ArdenScholarsGild@gmail.com. Title your email Scholars Gild Request and include your name, comments, and request in the body of the email. POETRY GILD The Poetry Gild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the Library at Gild Hall. The business meeting is at 7:30 PM, followed by poetry readings and discussion.
