Coastal Country Park Walks Sandilands to Huttoft Bank A CIRCULAR WALK OF 11KM (7 MILES)

INTRODUCTION The Lincolnshire Coastal Country Park lies between Sandilands, Chapel St Leonards and Huttoft on the quiet Lincolnshire coast. With five miles of beautiful sandy beaches, amazing big skies and some wonderful wildlife sites, the Coastal Country Park is a great place to explore and enjoy. It aims to create a sustainable, diverse network of wildlife habitats; support the local economy; raise awareness of its natural and cultural heritage and provide recreational opportunities. One of the best ways to discover the area is on foot and this walk will take you through a variety of landscapes including a tree-lined disused railway line, now a nature reserve, across fertile arable farmland and along the coast.

WALK - SANDILANDS The directions start from the Roman Bank car park in Sandilands. If you are starting the walk from Huttoft Car Terrace follow the directions starting from point 14 1 2 Leave the car park and turn left along Roman Bank. Turn right onto a public footpath at the entrance to Masons Close. Follow the path to the right of the bungalow ahead and turn right around the edge of the yard and then behind a barn. Follow the path straight across a small field to a bridge. 3 4 5 Cross the bridge, turn left and follow the path beside the drainage channel to a road. Turn right and walk along the verge and then the roadside path. Turn left onto Crabtree Lane and follow it for approximately 250m. Turn left to walk along the footpath that follows the former railway line known as the Sutton Branch Line Walkway. The Louth and East Coast Railway opened the line in 1877, linking Louth to Mablethorpe. This section of the line is managed as a nature reserve by Mablethorpe and Sutton Town Council. A variety of native trees and shrubs have been planted to encourage wildlife, including hawthorn, hazel, spindle, dogwood, ash, oak and cherry. It is a great place to do a bit of bird watching, look out for barn owls, jays, blue tits, great tits, goldfinch and sparrowhawk to name but a few. 8 7 Cross a large drainage channel and continue along the old railway line for approximately 900m (just over 0.5 mile) to a road.

Turn left onto a track, just before the road crosses a large drainage channel, and walk beside the drainage channel for approximately 800m (0.5 mile). Where the track ends and a farm bridge crosses the drainage channel, turn left and follow a track, which becomes a tarmac lane, to a T-junction, approximately 1.2 km (0.75 mile). Turn left and walk along the verge of this busier road (A52). Turn right onto Sea Lane, taking care crossing the road. Walk along Sea Lane past Ryluc Farm. The road will then bend to the right, left and then to the left again. 10 At this last bend leave the road and walk straight ahead along a track with a drainage channel on the right.

The verges of this track are designated a Roadside Nature Reserve (RNR) by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and Lincolnshire County Council. There are over 60 RNRs across Lincolnshire covering over 50 miles. They are havens for invertebrates, small mammals and wildflowers. Plants found on these verges include dyer s greenweed, a small shrub with yellow flowers that gets its name from the yellow dye obtained from its stems and common restharrow, a trailing plant with pink flowers that got its name from its ability to slow down horse drawn harrows in the days before tractors. With the wide variety of plants and the nearby drainage channel the area is good for dragonflies and butterflies. Also keep your eyes open for heron, marsh harrier, barn owl and kestrel. 11 Follow the track for approximately 1 km (0.6 mile) to its end and the edge of a field. Walk straight ahead across the field to the hedge on the other side. Turn left and walk around the cottage to a road. 12 13 14 Cross the road with care, turn left, and walk along the road for approximately 100m. Walk up onto the roadside bank and continue along the bank in the same direction The bank will meet the lane into Huttoft Car Terrace. Turn right and walk into the car park and onto the sea wall. Turn left. Walk along the concrete sea wall for approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles) towards Sandilands (sand may cover the walkway at certain times of year) or alternatively walk along the beach. On a clear day you will be able to see the high ground of the Lincolnshire Wolds on your left. The area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on account of its high scenic beauty. As you approach Sandilands walk past the first row of beach huts to a gap. Turn left and leave the sea wall to return to the car park The sea bank beside the coast road is called Roman Bank but is medieval not Roman in origin. There would have been saltmarshes on the seaward side of the bank where large numbers of sheep would have grazed during the medieval period. On the right is Huttoft Marsh Nature Reserve, the newest nature reserve in the area. Much of this land is being returned to cattle grazed traditional wet grassland. There are a number of nature reserves in the area, most managed by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. For more information about the reserves and the wildlife found on them go to www.lincstrust.org.uk
