After Saturday s visit to Grand Valley State, the Bulldogs will return home for three more GLIAC games next week inside Wink Arena against Northwood (Jan. 14), Gannon (Jan. 17) and Mercyhurst (Jan. 19). Ferris played three home games in November before having none in December. The Bulldogs have four January home contests and will have four more regularseason home tilts in February. DAWGS GETTING VOTES: FSU was listed among other schools receiving votes in this week s (Jan. 8) USA Today/ESPN/Women s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs earned three points. No GLIAC schools were listed in the top 25 poll. FSU WINS LAST OUTING: Ferris State opened up an 11-point halftime edge and held on to post an 83-73 non-conference victory over Azusa Pacific (Calif.) in the final outing of a three-game trip to California in its most recent action last Monday (Dec. 31) afternoon in Azusa, Calif. Ferris, which had lost each of its three previous games by two points or less on the road, improved to 8-4 overall this season with the win over the nationally top 10-ranked NAIA school in the first-ever series' meeting. Senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) had another outstanding game for the Bulldogs with a contest-high 34 points, 15 rebounds and six assists inside Azusa's Felix Event Center. Folcik was joined by junior forward Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview), who finished with 11 points. Junior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) reached double-figure scoring as well with 10 points in the outing. Ferris led 40-29 at halftime and increased the margin to as many as 16 points at 49-33 with 16:50 remaining. The Cougars rallied to take a one-point lead, 59-58, with 7:52 left before the Bulldogs quickly regained the advantage and came out with the victory. TRIP TO CALIFORNIA: The Bulldogs dropped their initial two games on their trip to California. Ferris suffered a 63-60 loss at Cal-State Dominguez Hills (Dec. 28) and lost on a buzzer-beater at Cal-State San Bernardino (Dec. 29) in the second leg of the three-game trip. Prior to the trip to California, the Bulldogs had never played a team from the West Coast state in game action. LAST CAMPAIGN: The FSU women's squad returns three starters and eight letterwinners from one of the most successful seasons in school history. Ferris State, which advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championship Game for the first time ever last season, was ranked 25th nationally in the final 2006-07 USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll. The Bulldogs, who prior to last year had never won a NCAA Tournament game, recorded back-to-back wins in their first two national tournament contests en route to the regional runner-up finish. Ferris also compiled a second-place tying 13-5 GLIAC regular-season finish and earned the program's eighth consecutive GLIAC Tournament bid. THIS SEASON: The FSU women's squad returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last season s spectacular NCAA Tourney run. FSU s roster this season also includes seven freshmen, six of whom are new to the program as true freshmen. HEAD COACH TRACEY DOROW: Tenth-year FSU head coach Tracey Dorow (formerly Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk) presently ranks as Ferris alltime winningest coach with a current 166-101 (.622) career record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, she guided FSU to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tourney appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. She spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at Indianapolis (1997-98). She also directed FSU to an NCAA Tourney berth in 2003-04 before last season s run to the Sweet Sixteen. MORE BULLDOG NOTES Women s Basketball Release Page 2 Jan. 8, 2008 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ferris Rachel Folcik received the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week honor just prior to the holiday break on Dec. 17, which represented the second time this year and eighth time in her career she's claimed the league weekly distinction. Folcik, who previously earned the award this campaign on Nov. 26, led the Bulldogs to their sixth consecutive victory of the season at Lake Superior State (Dec. 15) to claim the award. Folcik attained the league weekly honor six of the final nine times it was awarded in 2006-07. NOTHING NEW FOR FSU: A Bulldog player has earned the conference weekly honor three times to date this season as junior forward Jenna Guay claimed this season's first divisional weekly honor following her performance in the season-opening Quincy (Ill.) Subway Tipoff Tourney (Nov. 16-17) prior to Folcik receiving the same award twice this year. THE COACHING STAFF: The Bulldogs have a new full-time assistant coach this season in Crystal Harris, who played collegiate basketball at the University of California-Riverside. She also has professional playing experience and replaced former assistant coach Justin Rees, who landed a NCAA Division I assistant coaching position at Maine in August. Coach Dorow s father, Rick Bloodworth, returns for his second season as a volunteer assistant coach following a lengthy tenure as a junior college coach at Lake Michigan College from 1987 to 2006. BULLDOG BITES: FSU was the only GLIAC-member women s basketball team to defeat a NCAA Division I foe in exhibition play this preseason as the Bulldogs toppled Central Michigan 83-61 in Mount Pleasant (Nov. 1)... The Bulldogs wrapped up a seven-game road swing with last week s win over Azusa Pacific... Ferris has currently won 16 of its last 22 games dating back to last season... Rachel Folcik has notched a double-double (points and rebounds) in eight games this year, including five of her last six outings. She needs 69 points to notch her 1,500th career point... All four of FSU s losses this year have came against teams with two or fewer losses, including two nationally top-five ranked squads in Delta State (Miss.) and Drury (Mo.)... The Bulldogs are 67-25 (.728) all-time inside Jim Wink Arena. THE BULLDOG ROSTER: Ferris 2007-08 roster includes three seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and seven freshmen. Seven of the 15 players are guards while the remaining eight are frontcourt players. Fourteen of the 15 players on the roster hail from Michigan. Rachel Folcik and Teghan Thelen are the Bulldogs team captains this season. FERRIS PICKED SECOND: Ferris State was picked to finish second in the 2007-08 GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Preseason Poll, which was announced during the league's media day teleconference (Oct. 24). The poll was chosen for the first time in league history by selected members of the media and the GLIAC's Sports Information Directors. The 30-member group tabbed Grand Valley State and Gannon to win the conference's North and South Division titles, respectively. In addition to the poll, the league also released a Preseason All-GLIAC Team, which was chosen by the conference's head coaches. FSU s Rachel Folcik was among five individuals named to the North Division team and also chosen as the GLIAC's Preseason Player of the Year. CLIMBING THE LIST: FSU s Rachel Folcik currently ranks fifth in school history with 1,431 career points and is only 290 shy of tying Lucy DeMartin's school-record total of 1,721 points at FSU. This season, Folcik currently ranks as the squad's leading scorer (21.0 ppg) and rebounder (10.7 rpg). She's reached double-figure scoring in 11 of 12 contests while posting eight double-double (points & rebounds) efforts this campaign. The 2006-07 NCAA Division II Kodak/Women s Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American was named to both the All- GLIAC North Division and All-Great Lakes Region First Teams last year in addition to the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. Folcik s 241 made field goals and 602 total points last season were both school single-season marks while her 261 rebounds was the second-highest seasonal figure in FSU history. The 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Women s Basketball College Division Second Team pick scored in double-figures 27 times last year and notched 13 double-double performances while averaging 18.8 points per game. THE BULLDOG TRADITION: The Ferris State women s basketball program, which is midst its 34th season of varsity competition, has compiled a 419-426 (.496) all-time mark. The Bulldogs won their only GLIAC crown, advanced to their first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which claimed GLIAC Tourney runner-up honors in 1999-00, has posted 10 or more victories 11 consecutive seasons. FERRIS STATE VS. THE OPPONENT THE RECORDS: Ferris currently owns an 8-4 overall record this season and is 3-0 in GLIAC action to date this year. The Bulldogs have dropped three of their last four games overall, but all three setbacks came on the road by three points or less. WSU presently is 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league action to date this campaign. SERIES INFORMATION: The Bulldogs maintain a 29-24 series advantage entering Wednesday s 54th meeting and defeated WSU 93-85 in the last meeting (2/15/07) at Detroit, Mich. FSU head coach Tracey Dorow presently has a 9-1 career coaching record against the Warriors. Ferris has won nine of the last 10 series encounters to date. SCOUTING WSU: WSU is presently 5-6 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC action after last Thursday s (Jan. 3) 93-83 league road setback at Findlay. Wayne State, which is led in scoring by junior guard Jasmine McCall (13.1 ppg), was 10-18 overall in 2006-07 and placed third (8-9) in the GLIAC s South Division. The Warriors, who are coached by eighth-year head coach Gloria Bradley, were picked to finish fourth in the 2007-08 GLIAC South Division Preseason Media Poll. WSU is led by eighth-year head coach Gloria Bradley, who holds a 91-111 (.450) overall record with the Warriors to date. 2007-08 SEASON TRENDS SITUATION......................FSU RECORD At home..................................3-0 On the road...............................5-3 At neutral sites............................0-1 Shoot over 50% from floor...................2-1 Shoot less than 50% from floor...............6-3 Opponent shoots over 50% from floor........0-0 Opponent shoots less than 50%.............8-4 Has higher shooting percentage.............8-3 Shoot over 70% from free throw line..........7-3 Shoot less than 70% from line...............1-1 Opponent shoots over 70% from line.........4-2 Opponent less than 70% from line...........4-2 Has higher free throw percentage............7-3 Shoot over 30% from three-point line.........4-1 Shoot less than 30% from 3-pt. line...........4-3 Opponent over 30% from 3-pt. line...........4-4 Opponent less than 30% from 3-pt. line.......4-0 Has higher 3-pt. percentage.................5-1 Has more assists..........................6-1 Opponent has more assists.................0-1 Assists are equal..........................2-2 Has more turnovers........................7-3 Opponent has more turnovers...............1-0 Turnovers are equal........................0-1 Has more steals...........................2-0 Opponent has more steals..................6-4 Steals are equal...........................0-0 Has more blocks..........................3-3 Opponent has more blocks.................4-1 Blocks are equal...........................1-0 In November..............................4-1 In December..............................4-3 In January................................0-0 In February...............................0-0 In March..................................0-0 On Monday...............................1-0 On Tuesday...............................0-0 On Wednesday............................0-0 On Thursday..............................1-1 On Friday................................2-1 On Saturday..............................4-2 On Sunday...............................0-0 In afternoon games........................2-0 In evening games..........................6-4 Against ranked teams......................1-2 In non-conference games...................5-4 In conference games.......................3-0 In non-conf. games vs. conf. teams...........0-0 Attendance under 500......................7-3 Attendance over 500.......................1-1 Has over 25 personal fouls..................1-1 Opponent has over 25 personal fouls.........0-0 In tournament games......................1-1 Against in-state foes.......................3-0 Against out of state teams..................5-4 Against teams with winning records..........4-4 Against teams with losing records............2-0 Against teams with even records.............2-0 When leading at halftime...................5-1 When trailing at halftime...................3-3 Three or more reach double-figures..........5-2 In overtime game..........................0-0 Game margin is 1-5 points..................4-3 Game margin 5-10 points...................3-0 Game margin over 10 points.................1-1
