1. Introduction This document has been prepared to inform and instruct employees, pupils, parents/carers and other who enter the school site, including visitors, both pedestrian and those using vehicles, about the site rules concerning pedestrian and vehicle separation. Risedale Sports & Community College takes safeguarding and the Health & Safety of all site users very seriously. It is therefore imperative that individuals take great care and exercise caution when on the school grounds or within the vicinity of the school grounds and follow instructions put in place to minimise and wherever possible avoid risk of injury. If there are any concerns about traffic safety, they should be reported to the Facilities Director in the first instance. These instructions constitute site rules so we urge all site users to read this document carefully and act in accordance with its content. Pupils in breach of the site rules may be subject to disciplinary action. Copies of this document will be placed on the school website and can be collected from the school reception. www.risedalecollege.co.uk This document will be reviewed annually and awareness raised through our various communication routes. For further information please contact; Gill Morrissey, Facilities Director on 01748 833501 or Morrissey.g@risedale.org.uk 3 P a g e

2. School Layout / Access 3. Pedestrians There is a pavement to the front and side of the school and pedestrians should make sure that they use this safely and cross at the two designated pedestrian crossing entry points. Pupils walking in groups should take into account that they need to allow for other users to pass safely. Pedestrians should recognise that the pedestrian crossing points are adjacent to vehicular access points also and that during peak times they should exercise caution when using the crossings. Designated Entry Points Pedestrians should follow the local footpaths, deemed as the snicket, to enter the school grounds. There are two entry points, one accessible from the Hipswell Road with a crossing point directly outside the entrance to the Hipswell Primary School and the main school car park and the other, approximately 100 yards further on directly leading into the school grounds and the walkway to the main school reception doors. 4. Pupils/students It is very important that pupils set a good example to others, particularly in the spirit of being a safe school. There are a number of site related areas pupils should be aware of; Pupils should be particularly aware that entry into the school grounds via vehicular access points (school car parks, bus parking and service areas) is strictly out of bounds. Whilst this may sometimes appear to be a quick way into the school it is a breach of the site rules and compromises safety and the safety of others. 4 P a g e

Pupils found to be climbing over railings, not following instructions in relation to the site, rules may be subject to disciplinary action. Pupils must not walk on the bus lane or cross the car park at any time, unless disembarking the buses or a vehicle. Pupils must follow instructions of staff and be aware of the following; The bus must be at a complete stop before disembarking. Only use the paths identified around the bus lane. No one should cross the bus lane or main car park as a pedestrian to access the pavements on the perimeter of the school. Allow the staff/driver to carry out their duties without distraction and behave well whilst on board the buses. This ensures that vehicles can move off on time and the journey is comfortable for all. When using the footpaths WALK! This will avoid accidents and will make you more aware of what is happening around you. Pupils cycling to school must enter the grounds via the pavement and not via the vehicular access road. On entry to the grounds pupils must stop riding and walk their bikes to the cycle storage area. They should exit the school grounds in the same way and via the same route. If pupils are accessing the school before the school day begins, entry into the building is only permitted via the student entrance gate and doors. Entry using any other doors is not permitted. Drop Off There is a delivery/drop off area at the front of the main reception doors of the school. Pick-ups and drop offs are not permitted in the bus lane at any time. 5. Staff There is a main car park at the front of the school and on the school grounds accessible from Hipswell Road. This car park is the only car park and therefore is used by visitors also. Drivers should adhere to the 5mph speed limit at all times. Please bear in mind that some young people will additional support needs may have little or no awareness of road safety and you should take account of this. Staff are expected to act responsibly on the site when parking and accessing the school building. It is a requirement for staff to supply the administration staff with their registration number so that it can be added to the management information system. The school cannot be held responsible for any accidents or damage to vehicles whilst parked on the school site. Vehicles are parked at the owner s risk. Staff, Visitors, Disabled and Deliveries The main school car park is used by a number of vehicles staff, visitors and deliveries. Staff should enter the building via the main entrance or student entrance. Visitors/deliveries should make their way to the main entrance/reception and access the building using the entrance buzzer. 6. Visitors Visitors are welcome to park in the main car park. The car park is often busy however but only designated car parking bays should be used and no parking on the double yellow lines or in the bus lane is permitted at any time. 5 P a g e

The school cannot be held responsible for any accidents or damage to vehicles whilst parked on the school site. Vehicles are parked at the owner s risk. Access into school is only permitted via the main reception entrance doors. Visitors need to press the security buzzer located in the entrance lobby and wait for the doors to open. All visitors must report to reception and sign in on the electronic signing in system. This system will take a photograph which will be displayed on the visitor badge which must be worn at all times. This system also required you to log your registration number and who you are visiting. You will be asked to sign out prior to leaving the premises. 7. Servicing / Deliveries Drivers of service vehicles on site to carry out school works should report to the reception and completed the mandatory paperwork and await the arrival of a member of the site team. If necessary drivers will be issued with a gate key if their vehicle is required at another area of the school site. It is the responsibility of the driver to open and close the security gate and return the key to the main reception. The school actively discourages deliveries to the rear of the school before school commences, during break and lunchtimes (8.15 8.35am, 10.30 10.50 and 12.30-13.10). Service Area PE / Kitchens The area that provides access to the main kitchen and refuse collection points is located behind security gates. Therefore the above procedure is to be followed if being carried out within the school opening hours. 8. School Buses Buses that enter the site to collect mainstream pupils should do so using the one way system accessible from Hipswell Road. The Senior Leadership Team has designated the bus lane for sole use of the busses between 8.00am 8.30am and 2.45 3.10pm. The school has only one bus at this time dropping off and collecting students. The bus enters from the Hipswell Road and utilising the bus lane for parking and then leaving the car park using the one way system. The area does become very congested with vehicles at the end of the school day which requires drivers to exercise extreme caution and to be vigilant when carrying out vehicle manoeuvres in any part of the school grounds. Taxis for mainstream pupils These vehicles are to use the delivery bay whilst dropping off and picking up pupils. 9. Disabled Access Pedestrian access is by the main front entrance. We do not have automatic door facilities and a member of the reception team will assist with opening doors where required once the buzzer has been sounded. Disabled Parking There are two disabled bays located close the main school entrance. These bays are clearly marked and accessible via Hipswell Road and the one way system into the main school car park as indicated in the diagram in Section 2 of this document. If the car park is full, staff may use these bays but must report this to reception in case the space is required for a driver who holds a disabled badge. 6 P a g e

10. Additional Parking At the end of the school day, (14.55) access is given to the school senior yard to assist with parking for those parents collecting children from the Hipswell Primary school. There should be no parking in front of the Sports Hall and Sports Hall Gates and the bin area at any time as this causes obstruction. Dogs that are brought onto the school site in a vehicle must remain the vehicles as the site operates a no dogs on site ruling. 11. Outside the School Grounds The school accepts that parking near the school is not easy. The main Hipswell village green in a main thoroughfare and in constant use with no off-road parking areas. Parents/Carers are encouraged not to park and obstruct access areas around the green and allow their children to walk the remaining distance if they drop them off further away. However, pupils should be reminded to walk the perimeter of the site and only enter by the dedicated pedestrian access points as previously detailed in section 3. Parking indiscriminately, such as mounting pavements, double parking, parking in the bus lane, stopping on double yellow lines, obstructing access points in streets driveways and on the school grounds causes danger to pupils and other road users. Accidents can arise if views are obstructed or pedestrians have to negotiate between parked vehicles. In addition, the roads can become very congested which results in frustration and delay to services and ongoing journeys. Please act responsibly by parking as far away from the school as possible to keep the pupils at Risedale Sports & Community College, local residents and other road users safe. 12. Management Practices Key to the ongoing monitoring of the plan is the role of the school Senior Leadership Team and other key staff. All staff has a responsibility to make sure that they are acting in such a way as to not compromise the health and safety of themselves or others. Supervision The Senior Leadership Team will arrange for daily supervision around the bus lane and the pedestrian areas at the end of each school day. Non Compliance If there are concerns or incidents that constitute non-compliance these will be recorded by those monitoring the site and appropriate action will be taken. This includes possible disciplinary action and reports going to contractors or service management which may result in negative action. Day to day monitoring of the site will be undertaken by the Senior Management Team on duty and any issues/instances reported, recorded, discussed and where necessary actioned. 7 P a g e
