IN MEMORY OF OUR GOOD FRIEND, RON PURDY The Nebraska Senior Golf Association lost a stalwart on February 26, 2014 when Ron Purdy succumbed to a battle with cancer. Ron was a true Nebraskan, born in Grand Island in 1930. Along with his involvement in a most impressive list of civil organizations, he was on the NSGA board for nearly 20 years. Most of that time was served as Secretary/Treasurer, culminating with his final year on the board as our President in 2012. Ron spent countless hours ensuring attention to every detail and keeping board members pointed in the proper direction. Probably the thing most remember is him taking over every golf event as emcee. He would not only ensure every winner/team was recognized, but also entertained everyone with his great jokes that he loved to tell. Ron traveled to every single NSGA event, making sure they were properly staged. He recruited more members than any other participant. I really doubt there is anyone who has been a member for more than four years who doesn t have a memory or two of Ron. Despite declining health, he teamed with his son at his home course (Riverside) two years ago and not only won prize money, but received a standing ovation when introduced to the crowd. That ovation was fitting for an outstanding individual like Ron and I hope each of you thinks of him when you tee off at your first NSGA event this year. It s doubtful anyone in the history of the organization contributed more to its success. For his untiring dedication we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. Thanks for the memories, Ron, and may you Rest in Peace. 1

To my fellow senior golfers March 2014 Hi Men: As we approach spring, and winter is behind us now, the thought of golfing again on a regular schedule is becoming more and more possible. The excitement starts to build and we don t have to just watch golf on TV. I hope the 2014 schedule appeals to you and you re all able to play a lot of senior events this year. Line up your partners and let s get to playing. The first event is May 5 th in Beatrice and now is the time to get geared up, choose your partner for that event and consider as many others as you can! I look forward to seeing large turnouts each week we play. I hope this letter finds you in good health and ready to get started. Thanks for being a member of the NSGA. All the best and great golfing this year! John Fecht, President Nebraska Senior Golf Association 2

SANDBAGGING CONCERNS? The handicap system is one of the great things about the game, because it enables players of all abilities to compete against one another on a level playing field. At least it s supposed to. But if you sit down in any grillroom, you ll hear complaints about players whose handicaps are, shall we say, a bit suspect. The NSGA is doing its part to combat this problem by taking steps to strengthen its own Handicap Committee. The Handicap Committee, with your help, will act as a watchdog and have the power to step in, if necessary, and adjust a player s handicap index. The most important safeguard against sandbagging is what the USGA calls peer review. Peer review is the process of providing a reasonable and regular opportunity for members of a golf club to play golf with each other, and of providing access to scoring records and USGA Handicap Indexes for inspection by others. It s basically your obligation to note concerns and report them before they result in a net 59 or 60. The NSGA recognizes that any player can have a great round. But when there s a pattern of low scores in tournaments, it raises a red flag. The nature of the handicap system, which is based on the best 10 of the previous 20 scores instead of a player s average score, militates against low net numbers. This means that even rounds in which the player merely shoots to his Course Handicap (i.e., his net score matches the Course Rating) is actually a strong showing, because that should happen in roughly only one of every four rounds. A net score of three strokes below the Course Rating is a once-a-year occurrence for most players with honest handicaps, while a net score in the low 60s is a once-in-alifetime thing, if you re lucky. 12

Without peer review and the power of the Handicap Committee, the system alone can t stop a determined sandbagger. The human element is important. Virtually all sandbagging falls into one of three categories. The simplest way to sandbag is by forgetting to post all your scores. A more nefarious method is for a player to post a score higher than he actually shot. A third way can be much more subtle, under the heading of manipulating the round. Ignorance of the system is unacceptable. The sad fact about sandbagging is that its existence spoils some of the fun of competition for the vast majority of golfers with honest handicaps, whether they win or lose. That s why the NSGA wants your help to really do something about sandbagging. Begin by posting all your scores using Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) which sets a maximum score you can take on any hole, based on your course handicap. A chart is provided below for those unfamiliar with ESC. Next, practice peer review. If you want to review a player s scoring record you can do so on the web in the comfort of your home at www.ghin.com. Finally, we encourage you to contact an NSGA Board member if you think there might be a problem. Equitable Stroke Control Chart Course Handicap Maximum Score to Post 0-9 Double Bogey 10-19 7 20-29 8 30-39 9 40 or higher 10 Let s work together under the guidelines of the USGA Handicap System to make NSGA competitions as fair and equitable as possible. 13

GOT TIME ON YOUR HANDS AND LOVE GOLF? BECOME A NEBRASKA GOLF ASSOCIATION VOLUNTEER! Because it administers nearly 60 days of competition and conducts over 25 Course Ratings each year, the NGA is always looking for good volunteers. Whether it's the starter on the first tee, an official in the scoring tent or a course rating team leader - every organized event and rating needs great volunteers. Currently we have three categories of NGA volunteers: rules officials, tournament volunteers and course rating volunteers. Rules Officials provide on-course assistance to tournament players regarding the Rules of Golf and pace of play. Rules officials are given assignments by the NGA based on their knowledge of the Rules of Golf and their experience in officiating. To assist officials the NGA offers numerous educational opportunities and necessary training. Tournament Volunteers assist in activities that don t require extensive training. Examples are on-course scoring, registration, pace of play check-point monitors, scoring assistants, starters, spotters and standard bearers. Course Rating Volunteers assist the NGA in rating over 25 golf courses per year. This program is vitally important to the integrity of the USGA Handicap System since the entire system revolves around accurate USGA Course and Slope Ratings. Individuals who would like to serve as a course rater receive training before becoming part of a rating team. Successful course raters are analytical by nature and enjoy working with numbers. For information on becoming an NGA volunteer please call the NGA office at (402) 505-4653 or email Gary Austin at austin1090@cox.net. 15

NSGA IMPORTANT NOTICE As in the past, the NSGA has limited the number of players to 128 for all events. However, player numbers for three events have been restricted to fewer than 128 by the courses. These numbers will help complete play in a reasonable time IF everyone keeps up with the group ahead. With this many people there will be occasional hold-ups, but try to keep up! Slow play is the biggest complaint we get from participants! A ten-day sign-up period, commencing the day booklets are mailed or made available on the website, will allow members to get their entries submitted. A drawing will take place on Thursday, April 10, 2014. All entries received within those ten days will be separated by event. A lottery-type drawing will be conducted for events with more than the maximum allowed entries to determine the field. Up to ten more teams will be drawn for a standby list. When the teams are finalized, they will be posted on the NSGA website, along with the list of standby teams. This is the only random drawing that will be held. All other events will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Entries for events not full after the initial ten-day period will also be posted on the website and will be updated as other entries are received. A standby list will be posted when these events are full. Those entries not drawn will be returned to one of the team members, along with the submitted check or a refund check from the NSGA. Please be patient. This may take a while, particularly if you re on the standby list. You may make it in later due to cancellations. We strongly recommend players check the events on the website to ensure your team is listed if you think you are signed up for a certain event. With the number of members we have, we obviously can t guarantee every team will get into every event they want to play, unless the team buys the All Events Coupon. We feel these procedures provide the fairest way to get maximum participation and be fair to all members. 16

LATE PARTNER CHANGES Players making partner changes have until 24 hours before the scheduled start time of an event to notify the Director of Tournaments. After that time, teams that change players can still play in the tournament and eat at the dinner, but will NOT be part of the competition. In other words, they will be playing for fun and will be ineligible for prize payouts. CANCELLATION POLICY The more lenient cancellation policy used last year, changed from previous years, will remain in effect this year. To better accommodate members signing up for events in advance, there will be NO cancellation fee if the Director of Tournaments is notified of a change at least one week in advance. If notice is given one week before the event, there will be a $25 per player cancellation fee. If notice is given three days or less before the event, there will be a 50% per player cancellation fee. As in the past, there will be exceptions to these cancellation policies (death, accidents, etc.) and these will be decided on a case-by-case basis. DRESS CODE Players must wear appropriate golf attire. No tank top shirts, cut-off shorts, or jeans will be allowed. Metal spiked golf shoes are prohibited in all NSGA events. 17

PLEASE NOTE (Guaranteed Event Entry) This year we are again pairing several events together: Beatrice CC/Firethorn GC ($258 entry fee) Shadow Ridge CC/Platteview CC ($268) If you sign up for Beatrice CC AND Firethorn GC, you are guaranteed a spot at Firethorn. If you sign up for Shadow Ridge CC AND Platteview CC, you are guaranteed a spot in Shadow Ridge. We are trying to promote participation at places where numbers have declined in recent years or have never been full. This does not mean you cannot sign up for these individually, just that if you really want to play Firethorn and are also willing to play Beatrice, for example, you know you will be in the Firethorn event. The last two coupons are designed to sign up for these combinations. Entry fees due with these coupons are $258 for Beatrice/Firethorn and $268 for Shadow Ridge/Platteview. These fees are less than the normal $280 because reduced fees were negotiated at Beatrice and Platteview. Please use the Combination Coupons if you want to take advantage of this opportunity. 18

PLEASE READ AND COMPLY ENTRY FORM INFORMATION In filling out your entry forms, please comply with the following instructions: 1. Show your name EXACTLY as it is on your GHIN Handicap card. 2. All events are 2-man best ball using 90% of handicap. You must enter as a team. We award prizes for low gross and low net. If you are having trouble finding a partner, please contact Mick Shonsey, Tournament Director, at 402-659-2078 (cell), 402-330-4192 (home) or 402-334-6282 (office). He will try to find you a partner. We are trying to make it possible for all our members to play in our events, so please work with us! 3. Enter your GHIN number as shown on your GHIN card. We are asking for your preference of tees because some members, regardless of age, prefer to play from the back tees. Members 70 years and older may play from the senior tee boxes, as well as anyone else who requests them because of physical limitations. We now have your age in the database, so if the age and tee boxes are blank on your application, you will be assigned a tee according to your age. Players under 70 will play from the regular tees. 4. We will get your current handicap for each event from the USGA reports as supplied by the GHIN system. All members must have an active GHIN number and current handicap to enter NSGA events. 5. For further information, call Mick Shonsey, Tournament Director, whose phone numbers are listed in paragraph 2 above. 6. Individual GPS units are allowed in our events. 7. One single coupon (All Events Coupon) can be used to sign up with the same partner for all events. NSGA MEMBERSHIP FEES NSGA by-laws indirectly state that its members must belong to the Nebraska Golf Association (NGA), which maintains their USGA handicaps. Nearly all of our members belong to the NGA through NGAmember clubs throughout the state. A few have elected to have their USGA handicaps maintained solely through the Nebraska Senior Golf Association (NSGA). This is fine in practicality and we don t discourage it, but under the single-fee system, a financial shortfall results for the NSGA. Therefore, we have established two membership fees: $25 Member who has his NGA membership through a member club in his area $43 Member who wants his NGA membership through the NSGA (chooses NOT join another NGA-member club) The following discussion will help explain the reasoning for two different fees. A service was set up by the NGA for individuals who wanted a USGA handicap, but don t live close to an NGA-member golf facility. This service has evolved to include a few members who simply choose not to join a local golf club. Their handicaps are maintained through the NSGA by the NGA, that is, the NSGA serves as their NGAmember club. By paying only a $25 membership fee, two outcomes become evident. Either they re getting a free USGA handicap or the NSGA is getting less than its $25 from their membership fees. Therefore, we need $43 from those members to keep the organization financially healthy and to maintain fairness among members. Your membership dues are used to help provide competitive events to our members and to keep the organization solvent. Part of your annual dues also goes to the NGA each year to help promote junior golf throughout the state. Your understanding of this two-tier membership fee issue is appreciated as we look forward to another great year of NSGA events. 57

The $43 fee applies ONLY to those few members who want their USGA handicap solely through the NSGA, that is, they DO NOT plan to join an NGA-member club, but want to play in NSGA events. Membership is limited to men 50 years old and older with a valid USGA handicap. I understand that membership in this organization must be approved by the Association. Applicant s Signature Date of Birth Mailing Address City State Zip Code Phone Number GHIN Number Home Golf Course Email Address Recommended by NSGA Member (For new members only) PLEASE NOTE: In an effort to increase membership and especially to increase event signup, the Board decided to once again this year send Schedule of Events and Membership booklets to all members active as of March 15, 2014. The Board also voted to return to the previous practice of including the names, addresses and phone numbers of all active members in the booklet. The newest version of the NSGA s booklet will be still available on the NGA/NSGA website, www.nebgolf.org/nsga. ATTENTION SENIOR GOLFERS: THE NEBRASKA GOLF ASSOCIATION HAS TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR GOLFERS FIFTY & OLDER 16th Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship The 2014 Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship will be held at the Elks Country Club in Columbus June 2-3 and offers 36-holes of stroke-play competition with gross and net prizes in three age divisions (50-57, 58-64 and 65+). Each age division is assigned to a separate set of tees. Those golfers 58 and older that want to compete for the overall Senior Amateur title may do so by playing from the championship tees. These golfers remain eligible for both gross and net prizes within their respective age divisions. In addition, golfers 50-64 have the option of competing for net prizes only. They will be moved up to the forward tees and are ineligible for any gross prizes. 4th Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship The 2014 Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship will be contested at the Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island. This event is scheduled August 4-6 and offers multiple flights for all skill levels. During the entry process golfers are required to select one of two divisions gross or net. The gross division will compete in a stroke-play qualifier to determine flights and seeds for match play which begins on day two. The net division will be pre-flighted based on USGA Handicap Index and play net matches within their flights. The net flights only will offer consolation brackets, guaranteeing all entrants two rounds of competitive golf in addition to the other perks (meals & awards) golfers receive with their entry fee. For entry information or complete details on either of these championships please visit the competitions section of the NGA web site at www.nebgolf.org or contact the NGA office at (402) 505-4653.
