Bicycle City Today History / People Inspirations / Models Community Benefits Location & Maps Local Attractions / Links Drawings Lifestyle / Amenities Education / Jobs / Transport Animals / Natural Setting Other Car-Free Places Dec. 11, 2010 Event Day These slides contain plans, information and images of other communities to convey a vision of what we think BC could look like as it grows.

Construction of Bicycle City South Carolina has only recently begun starting with the building of hiking and biking trails. Where we go from here is up to You!

The Congaree and other Native Americans were a big part of our region s history. Nearby our first 9 home sites is Ahawi Lake, we named it based on the Indian word for deer.

A brief history of Bicycle City Mid 1990 s: a dream Mid 90 s 2005: R & D 2006: Funding 2010: The first Bicycle City near Columbia SC is approved. Building of trails begins. An early vision of BC by Mary Anne Lederer

4,200 Miles for Kids In 1986, BC co-founders Joe Mellett (middle) and Ward Allebach (right) rode their bikes 4,200 miles across the US raising money for Big Brothers & Sisters and United Cerebral Palsy. They learned how healthy and fun a cycling lifestyle can be. Other inspirations included: a visit to Arcosanti AZ; bike-car accidents; and a love of animals and nature.

The Bicycle City team includes top advisors and consultants including: Ozzie Nagler Internationally recognized Land planner. Harvard graduate in architecture & urban design. Highlights: Harbison SC, Seoul Olympic Village and the 3 Rivers Greenway. Anne Lusk Research Fellow: Harvard School of Public Health. Ph.D. in architecture. 25-year history working on bicycle environments. NIH Grant Recipient. Mike Lydon Principal of the Street Plans Collaborative. Worked for DPZ. Projects featured in CNN Headline News, Planetizen and Planning Magazine. Avid bicyclist.

Community Friendships Improve Public Health Lower CO2 Emissions < Storm Water Runoff Reduce Traffic Economic Development Create Key Model of Low-Impact Development

How would you describe a great community?

Drive Less, Live More Save Time & Money

Less pollution and healthier lifestyles Alternative Energy is more sustainable Improve air quality one bike at a time

Fewer impermeable surfaces Less infrastructure for storm water mitigation: taxpayers save money. Soil nutrients intact, improving crop yields. Reduces risk of flooding.

Green/Clean Business: construction, technology, agriculture Eco-Tourism Education & Health Services Home/Internet based business etc.

Chicago NYC Other Major Cities Boston Miami Via Amtrak The Ultimate Car-Free Vacation: Amtrak to the 3 Rivers Greenway Bicycle City Via Bicycle on the 3 Rivers Greenway Columbia Lake Murray Colleges Universities Schools State Farmers Market 10,000 Year History Park

The South Carolina Midlands Region has the right foundation to be a must-visit international cycling destination: 3 Rivers Greenway Tour de Midlands Bicycle City Etc.

Bicycle City chose our location in part because of the 3 Rivers Greenway one of America s most beautiful and well designed car-free greenway systems.

Bicycle City is connected to local population and job centers; recreation; education; health services; attractions; farmers markets and rail/bus transportation via greenways and low traffic routes. More community connections are on the way. South Carolina State Farmers Market University of South Carolina Amtrak Station Columbia, SC

A sample of potential home style examples we envision for phase 1.

Exclusively green homes and other structures Convenience market / community center on-site Miles of shaded bike/hike trails Alternative energy (solar, geo-thermal, etc) Community events & arts Organic gardening/farming Nature preserves, lakes, significantly more trees Animal protection and consideration Green shuttle service

Eco-Homes Shaded Bike Trails Alternative Energy Bicycle City is committed to leading edge sustainable housing, outdoor recreation amenities and use of alternative energy.

Bike Races Specialized Surfaces Cycletecture

We have an active respect and consideration for animals in all we do.

Organic Gardening Nature Car-Free Living

Promoting Remote Job & Business Opportunities Being at the forefront of clean technologies, Bicycle City could be a hotspot for remote businesses and employees.

Enjoy miles and miles of walking and biking trails

Bike Repair for Children Organic Gardening Workshops Bicycle Mechanics Institute

Ozzie Nagler designed Harbison in 1974 with bike/walking trails connecting all homes and businesses. The community serves as a local model (20 miles from BC) for how great a bike-friendly place can be to live and work.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Arcosanti, Arizona

Copenhagen Denmark, Car-Free District

Zermatt, Switzerland

Vauban is a great example of a place that puts it all together: car-free spaces with sustainable building, energy and living.

Why this Location? Lexington County support for sustainable development; proximity to: downtown Columbia with 8 colleges & universities, the car-free 3 Rivers Greenway and the SC State Farmers Market; year-round cycling climate; Lexington schools; and our beautiful site with multiple lakes, gentle terrain and significant tree preservation; etc. If I own a car, where do I park it? Convenient community parking is available near your home - only 400 feet in the case of the first 9 home-sites. Want more closeness to your car? - live nearer to the perimeter. If you don t own a car or just want a more natural, quiet setting - live closer to the center.

Why the name Bicycle City? Bicycle: conveys a healthy, active lifestyle w/clean technology City: conveys diversity of ideas and people; culture, arts We also wanted an approachable name for children. The bike is an equalizer allowing them to explore their community. Many people fondly remember the first time they learned to ride a bike. Let s create a great community that captures that same excitement and wonder ever day.

Your ideas can help make Bicycle City a great place to live, work and visit What is important to you? What are your suggestions? Please send your ideas, questions And suggestions to Joe Mellett: joe@bicyclecity.com

Much of the information and images displayed in this presentation are meant to simply convey design and planning concepts we envision for Bicycle City rather than representations of current BC images and detail.

Join us at Bicycle City South Carolina on Dec 11 th, 2010 for our ceremonial ground breaking events day. Highlights include: biking, hiking, kayaking, lunch, presentations, volunteer trail building and organic gardening and a chance to meet other BC people.
