FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Singapore Dance Theatre presents Celebration in Dance 2018 29 July 2018 Esplanade Theatre 12 June 2018 Performances by Eight Royal Academy of Dance Schools Double Contrasts by Choo-San Goh Napoli Tarantella by August Bournonville Double Contrasts by Choo-San Goh Photo: Bernie Ng For the third time running, Celebration in Dance is a collaboration between Singapore Dance Theatre and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) for a one-night-only performance. This production presents a rare and brilliant opportunity for RAD students in Singapore to perform on the prestigious stage at the Esplanade Theatre. SDT will be presenting Double Contrasts by Choo-San Goh and The Tarantella from the ballet Napoli by August Bournonville as well. Celebration in Dance is a unique, one of a kind collaboration developed by the Royal Academy of Dance and Singapore Dance Theatre. It is our hope to bring student dancers closer to professional dance performance through this experience with SDT in a performance celebrating everything that is magical and special in the art of dance and performance. Students devote themselves to the study of ballet to experience the both the process of learning and the rewards of dancing in front of an audience. It is my desire to create memories for young dancers that will last beyond the moments of preparation and performance and carry over into their future lives. These kinds of things are priceless and have an incomparable value connected to them. Moments like these are what we wish for our children and I welcome you to join us for the experience. says Artistic Director Janek Schergen.

Performances by Royal Academy of Dance Schools The RAD is one of the world s most influential dance education organisations. RAD exams set standards in classical ballet and they are a global leader in Continuing Professional Development for dance. Today, RAD has a presence in 83 countries, with 36 offices and about 14,000 members worldwide. Now in the 95th year, RAD continues to promote and develop excellence in dance. Their syllabi are taught around the world and thousands of students are enrolled on many dance courses and study programmes. Double Contrasts Choreography Staging Music Choo-San Goh Janek Schergen Francis Poulenc (Concerto in D Minor for Two Pianos and Orchestra) Double Contrasts is both elegant and classical in dance form. The two sets of dancers reflect the two solo pianists; one set being full and youthful enthusiasm and the other more sophisticated in nature. The work has energy, wit and style. The dancers exude chic and elegance in their formal costumes. Double Contrasts presents many technical challenges for the dancers. It is fast, as are all Choo-San s ballets at their heart and its leaves the audience exhilarated. One of Choo San s first ballets that stood the test of time and that is performed on a consistent basis from its premiere till now. Double Contrasts was first created for The Washington Ballet. Presented by the arrangement of Choo San Goh & H. Robert Magee Foundation Napoli Tarantella Choreography Staging Music August Bournonville Dinna Bjørn Edvard Helsted & H.S. Paulli Bournonville ballets are represented in every major ballet company in the world and considered to be amongst the purest form of ballet that has ever been established. August Bournonville (1805-1879) was the greatest choreographer of his generation. The Royal Danish Ballet has been the home of his choreographic works since his period with them as chief choreographer.

Since then, SDT has developed into Singapore s premiere professional dance company comprising of 32 dancers plus apprentices. In the course of each year, the Company performs six main seasons, including the widely popular Ballet Under the Stars at the Fort Canning Park, two full length classics, Masterpiece in Motion which brings together three works of the finest international choreography and Passages Contemporary Season. The Company s repertoire ranges from 19 th century traditional classical to contemporary works, from renowned choreographers like Choo-San Goh, George Balanchine, Stanton Welch, Natalie Weir, Val Caniparoli, Edmund Stripe, Kinsun Chan, Edwaard Liang, Nils Christe, Toru Shimazaki, Christina Chan, Ma Cong, and most recently Timothy Harbour, resident choreographer of Australian Ballet. In 2008, Janek Schergen was appointed as the Artistic Director of SDT, after his extensive involvement with SDT since its inception years in 1988. Under his leadership, the Company has made new achievements in the international and Singapore dance arena. In the last ten years, the Company has added 28 world premieres and 18 company premieres and new productions to the repertoire, in addition to numerous revivals of the existing Company s repertoire. Janek is also the Artistic Director of the Choo-San Goh & H. Robert Magee Foundation which oversees the licensing and production of Choo San Goh's ballets and the annual Choo San Goh Awards for Choreography. SDT has captivated audiences in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Mexico, China, Australia, France, United States, London, and Switzerland. The Company has taken part and has performed in numerous international festivals and events, such as Le Temps d Aimer la Danse a Biarritz in France, Mexico s Festival Internacional Cervantino, Chang Mu Arts Festival in Korea, Philippines Festival of Dance, and was part of the Victorian Arts Centre s Made to Move subscription series. SDT tours Kuala Lumpur and Penang annually, and has seen a growth in its dedicated support to the company. SDT actively reaches out to the public to create greater awareness of dance through outreach to schools with its Arts Education Programme, Dance Appreciation Series (jointly presented with Esplanade Co.), Adults Dance Classes, Scholars Programme for students considering dancing as a career, SDT Choreographic Workshop focusing on local emerging talents and One @ the Ballet, an initiative to help the public gain a better understanding of the different aspects of dance. In 2013, SDT moved to a new premise with four state of the art studios. Since, the Company has enhanced efforts in Education and Outreach, bringing greater awareness and appreciation for dance to a wider audience. We also cater the Ballet Associate s Course (BAC) for students who intend to develop their dance skills and techniques. Last year, we introduced Adopt an Audience to make arts accessible for everyone, including the low-income, underprivileged, and disabled in our society.
