What Equipment does Coach Like? What Size? All the local shops should have newer equipment and the ability to properly size and fit your child. Make sure bindings are adjusted specifically for your child s height, weight, boot sole length and skiing ability. Many newer Jr. Skis come with bindings pre-mounted. They are adjustable to any boot size without the need to re-drill. Skis Beginning skiers should have skis to chin height. For more advanced skiers. they can be longer, but there should be no need to have skis taller than your child. Rocker is the new design in many of the latest skis, including kids' skis. It does make a difference, but traditionally, cambered skis work just fine. (Volkl and K2 have rocker dialed in well)

Boots Sizing - Remove the liner and the sole insert. Have your child stand on the insole to make sure there is a bit of growing room. No more than 1 finger width. Ensure that the boot plastic is soft enough for your child to flex it. Stiff race boots often prevent lighter skiers from staying properly forward as they ski. (Salomon s T series: T1, T2, T3 are a great, soft-flexing boot) Avoid - Older rear-entry boots with cable or ratchet style buckles. The cables have limited adjustability, and the ratchet buckles can get clogged with snow.

Ski Poles Most Kindergarten and First Graders will not need poles. Once your child has advanced past the beginner chair and is making open parallel turns, you can consider introducing poles. Sizing Poles: Standing up, hold the pole upside down with the grip on the ground. With your hand right underneath the basket, your elbow should make a 90 degree angle. Poles like the K2 Sprout can be adjusted as your child grows. Snowboards Silly Snowboarders, we still love you. Sizing should be somewhere from chin to nose. Regular or Goofy refers to how the board is set up. Regular = Left Foot Forward Goofy= Right Foot Forward Tip: Make fists when you fall to protect your wrists. Wrist guards and padded shorts (hockey?) aren t bad ideas either.
