Golf Course Maintenance Howdy Folks, The golf season is off and running. We had a great turn out for the Men s Spring Member guest match play tournament! They dodged the rain on Saturday and had great weather on Sunday s final round. The picture below is of the shoot out on Sunday afternoon on hole ten. Mike Epps Golf Course Superintendent The greens have been rolling out very nicely and vertical mowing is the key to make this happen. It s a type of mowing we do on a regular basis on our putting surfaces here at Mira Vista. A vertical mower for greens uses a series of blades that almost look like a circular saw blade spaced 0.125-0.25 apart. The picture below shows a close up of the cutting unit. The golf ball gives you a size reference. The mower blades slice or cut vertically down into the grass to a specific depth, which helps to control grain and remove organic matter from the putting surface. The next time you are out playing, look at the putting surface and you might be able to see the verti-cut lines! When we verti-cut we typically verti-cut at minimum in two directions. Each direction is at a different angle from the first. This leaves a light diamond pattern which makes a big impact on grain reduction. After verti-cutting several days we typically top-dress with sand. The sand is dragged with a special mat called a coco mat. The drag mat helps stand the grass up and disperse the sand evenly. The sand falls in to the verti-cut lines and helps to smooth out ball marks and other depressions on the putting surface. Both the verti-cutting and top-dressing are part of our regular maintenance program which helps to keep the putting surface rolling true. I look forward to seeing you out on the golf course soon, and my goal is to have the course in the best condition possible every day for your enjoyment. If you have any questions or concerns please call or e-mail me 817-294 6615,mepps@miravistacountryclub.com or come ride the course with me, you might be surprised what you will see and learn.
