Clubhouse News PRESIDENT S NOTE, GARY H. CLEMMONS The Board would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Bill Jones as the new Director of Tennis of New Bern Golf & Country Club. For the past fourteen months, Bill has been an assistant pro and, most recently, appointed Interim Director upon the resignation of former Director, Kevin Brice. We are excited Bill is our new Tennis Director and, under his leadership, are confident the tennis program (and facilities) will continue to be the best in Eastern North Carolina. Going forward, this column will be used to inform the membership about actions taken by the Board at its previous meeting. This month, we would like to outline a history of our long term debt. When the renovations were completed in 2005, the original loan was $3.9 million. Interest and principal payments were made until November 8, 2007. On November 8, 2007, a loan modification agreement (#1) was executed. The principal balance at that time was $3,174,000.00. The monthly payment was $24,000.00, with a balloon payment due on November 22, 2015. The interest rate fluctuated between a floor of 4.5% and a ceiling of 7.65% annually. To reduce the interest rate (and pay off the debt sooner), a second loan modification agreement (#2) was executed on February 27, 2012. The outstanding debt at that time was $2,294,777.00. The new interest rate was fixed at 3.75% annually for 83 months, beginning April 22, 2012. Within the limitations outlined in Note #2, we have made some additional principal payments. The balance as of January 31, 2014, is $1,889,580.25. The debt principal has been reduced from $3.9 million in June 2005 to approximately $1.89 million in January 2014, or approximately $2 million. The Board continues to study creative ways to eliminate the debt, increase revenues, control expenditures, and maintain quality. As you might expect, this balancing act requires dedicated staff, a committed membership, and common goals. We are always open for suggestions in any of these areas. New Director of Tennis Congratulations to Bill Jones, our new Director of Tennis. The Tennis search committee met Monday, February 10, 2014 and reviewed over 80 applications for the Director of Tennis position. The committee then selected Bill Jones as the number one candidate and submitted their recommendation to the Board for their final decision. The Board met last Tuesday, February 17th and accepted the search committee's recommendation to name Bill Jones as Director of Tennis. Bill was offered the job and he graciously accepted the position. Please stop by and congratulate Bill on his new position. Bill Jones and wife, Susan.! Suggestions are always welcome. Please send an email to suggestions@nbgcc.com. PAGE 2

FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL Now that it s almost March, I sure hope all the snow and cold weather is behind us, so we can start looking towards Spring and nice warm weather. March is full of great things to do at the Club, starting with our first ever Pizza Night Buffet. We will be having a wonderful pizza buffet for all to enjoy. Dressy casual, including jeans, will be allowed in the main dining room for this event. Also, on Friday Night March 14, 2014, we will have DJ Chuck Kolb here for a St. Patrick s Day dance. At the same time, we will have the ACC Tournament airing for everyone to cheer on their favorite team. We are going to continue to have the Family Night Buffet every month, due to it s popularity. Bryan Stretch Mayer will be here on Thursday, March 20, 2014, for some Live Music. The Wine Dinners have been such a Clubhouse News great hit; we are planning our next one on Friday, April 4 th. The last four that we have done have been complete sellouts, so make your reservations early! Also, ladies don t miss out on the wonderful ladies luncheons; they are the third Wednesday of every month. REMINDERS: Shirt tails shall be tucked in at times while playing golf. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray. Walkers please be aware of golfers at all times on the golf course. Golfers have the right-of-way at all times and getting hit by a golf ball can be extremely dangerous and painful. Walking on the golf course is done at the walker s risk. Summer is just around the corner, and once again the Club will offer exciting summer camps for the kids. Details will be available in the April issue of the NBGCC Newsletter. New Bern Golf & Country Club is Now Accepting Credit Cards Visa and MasterCard are now being accepted for all Food & Beverage purchases, as well as Cart Fees and Green Fees in the Golf Pro-Shop. Credit cards cannot be used for monthly dues. If you have any questions please contact Patrick Dill. Did you know you can pay your dues quarterly or annually? Please contact the business office for details.! PAGE 3

Clubhouse News LES WE FORGET, BILL STREET! The year was 1988, and Chuck Tyson was the Club s President. Chuck holds up the Tyson name well, with a championship to his credit and as a valuable contributor to historical names and events for our Club. Thank you for all of your help my friend.! Lib Bryan just got started with an avalanche of championships for the ladies. Her background has been written about previously. She also, very deservedly, has the Ladies Annual Invitational Tournament named in her honor. She once told me she use to stop off on her way to work at the Tryon Palace to hit practice balls regularly, allowing her to maintain a sharp game.! Leroy Price racked up another win with the 1988 Men s Regular Championship. Worth another mention; his wife Mavis and he were the only husband & wife pair to own a championship at our Club. They also both carried good bowling averages. I got to know them at the bowling alley in the early 60 s. A great couple of athletes!! The Seniors Championship was also captured by Leroy that year. You might say he owns the Senior Plaque displayed in the hallway of the Club. Leroy is also a sharp card player, so you better be on your game when playing cards with this guy! TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Tennis News! Well, it looks like we have finally (and hopefully) worked through the last of the snow, although I have been told that March is the worst month for late large snow fall. Spring is on the way and we are hoping for a nice cool summer. The weather has been wonderful and we are happy to see the tennis center thriving again.! Thank you for all the support from our members who have been so patient with us getting the tennis center back in order. By the time you read this, hopefully the new merchandise will be in, so stop by and check it out. We have our March USTA Juniors L4 Tournament on the weekend of the March 15. The tennis center will be closed for the matches. We would love for you to come out and see all the great junior players from the area competing for our championship. We are hoping that many of our own juniors are able to compete.! Ladies league season is now in full swing, so let s cheer our ladies on whenever we can. We are so very proud of how hard they compete to play and win for their families and their club!! Lastly, I would like to take a moment to thank all the members who embraced my wife Susan and I and our two daughters, Courtney and Amanda. I was honored to be appointed the new Director of Tennis here at NBGCC. We are humbled and blessed by this commitment of your families to my family. We truly love being a part of this wonderful community Coach Bill with his hard working, tournament playing kids, Champion Thomas Peacock & Champion Tyler Morris. Check out their current trophies in the Tennis Pro Shop. and that we can all grow together and make a difference in and with for the rest of our lives. Thank you so very much.! Now let s enjoy the weather, the fellowship, and the FUN! 2014 USTA JR. SANCTIONED TOURNAMENT DATES NBG&CC will be hosting the 13 th Annual USTA junior tournaments again this year. Tennis News Thank You Ladies Tennis Association (LTA) I would like to personally thank the ladies tennis association (LTA) for their support and commitment to not only tennis but the surrounding community. The LTA is responsible for raising several hundred dollars for the Journey of Hope Foundation (supporting cancer patients in Craven County), new furniture in the tennis pro shop, providing snacks for USTA sanctioned tournaments, and generating exposure to the tennis program. As well as getting the bathrooms upgraded at the tennis facility.the tennis program would not be what it is without the overwhelming support of the LTA. If you are new to the club or would like to learn more or even join this wonderful group of ladies, please contact the tennis pro shop (637-6201). Winter Weather and Tennis Court Conditions Please know that it will be our priority and goal to maintain the tennis courts and their playability before and after freezing conditions. We take pride in knowing that the tennis courts at NBG&CC are open and available for play before any other clay court facility in the surrounding area. Communication will be extremely important during freezing weather. Therefore, if courts are unplayable, you will see signs closing the tennis courts, you will receive emails concerning court conditions, and the voice message for the tennis pro shop will offer detailed information. Thank you for your patience during inclement weather. Ladies League is in full swing! Come on out and check out our ladies, Monday thru Friday. They are the hottest ticket in town. New Club rule effective January 1, 2014: To play on a Club sponsored league tennis team, a non-member must reside outside the geographic boundaries of Craven and contiguous counties and pay a fee to be set at the discretion of the Board.!
