Brown County Junior Fair c/o OSU Extension-Brown Co. 325 W. State St. Bldg. B Georgetown, OH 45121 937-378-6716 : November 30, 2016 TO: FROM: Beef Project Members, Rick Banyea, Tom Cornwell, David Dugan, Jr. Fair Beef Department, FFA Instructors, Head Advisors, Senior Fairboard Beef Representatives Brett Rogers, Brown County Junior Fair Beef Department Superintendent It s that time of year again! Time to mark your calendars for the annual steer tagging for the 2017 Brown County and State Fair. The event will be held on Saturday, December 17 th between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at the Brown County Fairgrounds. Anyone showing a steer in 2017 must have their steer or market heifer tagged at this time. You will also be asked to identify the organization you will be showing under. Example: 4-H or FFA. Exhibitors should be aware that they must comply with their organization s membership requirements to be eligible to show at the fairs. You cannot switch the organization after the tag-in on the 17 th. If your animal dies, you are not able to take another steer. Two steers are considered one project. You may tag three steers, show two, sell one. You may show a maximum of two (2) steers and sell one steer or feeder calf; large Market Heifer class has been added. You can sign up for more than 4 livestock projects as of April 1 st, BUT you will only be permitted to show the number in terms of the Junior Fair rules by years of membership. This was changed in case an animal dies. You must be signed up by April 1 st. Again, if you are a 1 st year member, you show one animal, 2 nd year member - 2 animals, 3 rd year member - 3 animals, and 4 th year member and above - 4 animals. Again, you must be signed up by April 1 st. INFO REGARDING MARKET HEIFERS Market heifer projects that are born on or after January 1, 2016 will be tagged in with the steers on December 17 th. They may NOT be bred in order to show at the fair. Exhibitors will be required to bring a certificate from the vet (dated no more than one month prior) to check-in at the fair stating that the animal is open. If you do not have this certificate, you will not show. Once you tag your animal in as a market heifer, you are not permitted to show her as anything else. Enclosed are three noseprint cards. Please bring the completed noseprint cards with you on the 17 th. Please list the parent or guardians names on this form as you want them listed for the fair on the sale sheets. This is where we obtain our information. Please list both parents legibly if you wish to have those names listed on the sale sheets. Once again, the Brown County Cattlemen s Association will be sponsoring their Born and Raised events. Rules and Brown County Born and Raised Steer Certificate are enclosed with this mailing. Please bring completed certificate and $20.00 fee to tagin with you. Please listen to local radio station C103, check the OSU Extension Website at brown.osu.edu or the Brown County 4-H Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/brownco4h/ regarding this event in case of inclement weather. If someone is hauling another exhibitor s animal, we need the steer exhibitor s parent or guardian to send or bring the following information: (please print clearly and have complete information) 1. Member s name 2. Address 3. 4-H or FFA Chapter (which cannot be transferred after tag-in) 4. Breed of steer 5. Color 6. Identifying marks

All paperwork needs to be completed and signed or you will not be entered as a steer project. Please spread the word if you know of someone who may be joining for the first time. If you do not make tagging, you do not show your animal at the 2017 Brown County Fair. You also have to meet Quality Assurance requirements in order to show at the fair. Please remember if you have a champion or reserve, it goes directly to a USDA packer for slaughter. STATE FAIR INFORMATION FOR 2016: The Ohio State Fair is using a process similar to what they did in 2016. They will be using RFID tags and DNA through hair samples for registration for the 2017 OSF. It is the Exhibitors responsibility to request a packet and complete the process as explained in the packet. Nomination packets can be requested through the county Extension office, prior to January 15 th. If you are interested in exhibiting at the 2017 OSF and would like the Extension Office to have a packet for you at tag-in please call the Extension office at 937-378-6716 by December 14 th. Exhibitors must have all materials to the OSF by January 15 th to be eligible All Market Beef must be owned and in full custody of the junior exhibitor by January 1. We will have RFID tags and collection packets at tag-in for those who have requested them. If you are showing at a BEST Show prior to tag-in and need an RFID tag, please contact the Extension Office to make arrangements. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: We want to continue to provide a positive experience for Junior Fair exhibitors. All of us need to remember that we serve as role models for the youth showing, whether we are parents, advisors or friends. The Junior Fair Beef department is concerned about behaviors that were demonstrated in the barn this year, and they have decided that they will not tolerate behavior that is obscene, vulgar and/or offensive language. Brown County has always been looked up to for the quality of our shows, and those who are involved in the Junior Fair. We ask for your cooperation to keep up the high standards. Those who can t participate in a positive manner will be asked to leave the barn or show ring, and any member showing negative behavior may be disqualified. Let s all work to make 2017 a great year for the youth! Ohio youth enrolled in market beef projects will have the opportunity to participate in a program rewarding cattle for traits which determine value of a market beef project. The Beef Performance and Carcass Quality Show will be held during the Junior Market Beef Show at the Ohio State Fair. This show is similar to the Muscle Quality and Performance Barrow Show at the Ohio State Fair. Cattle will be shown in a separate live show prior to the Junior Beef Show during the Fair; however, the live evaluation will not be used in the final ranking for the contest. All cattle entered into the show will be harvested at a cooperating packer to be evaluated and ranked. For further information, contact Kyle Culp at culp.1045@osu.edu or 614-247-8976. The Skill-a-thon is mandatory for beef exhibitors in order to exhibit, be eligible for awards, and sale of project. Skill-a-thon dates in 2017 are April 23, May 21 and June 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This would also be a great time of year to thank buyers and bidders for their support. Best wishes with your project and the coming year. See you on December 17 th.
