The Redbirds completed a 5-3 road trip and sit nine games up in the American Southern division. Oklahoma City has won six straight and possesses the fourth-best record in the league. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56/87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Memphis hands the ball to All-Star righthander Luke Weaver in his 11th start of the year. Weaver is coming off back-to-back truncated outings, one due to injury and another due to high pitch count. He last pitched on Friday, shutting out Omaha over 3.2 innings and limiting the Storm Chasers to a hit and two walks while striking out three. Weaver does not have enough innings to qualify for the league lead, but would pace the PCL in ERA and WHIP. Trevor Oaks makes his 14th start (15th appearance) of the season and third against the Redbirds. In his two previous outings against Memphis, Oaks yielded two earned runs on nine hits with 12 strikeouts in 10.0 innings. He did not factor in either decision. Oaks enters today with the lowest walk rate among qualifying starting pitchers in the league (14 BB/74.0 IP, 1.70 BB/9). He is also fifth in the league in ERA and tied for the fourth fewest baserunners allowed per 9 IP. SCHEDULE WITH OKLAHOMA CITY: The Redbirds and Dodgers meet for their third series of the season, and second and final at AutoZone Park. Memphis is just 3-6 against Oklahoma City this year, the only team that the Birds do not have at least a.500 winning percentage against. The two teams met seven times over 11 days in April, and after this series, will not meet again until July 17-20. BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (June 28, 2011): Maikel Cleto made his Redbirds debut and allowed a home run to Omaha s Mike Aviles on the second pitch of the game. Cleto recovered to throw 7.1 innings, surrendering four hits and striking out 9 in the Redbirds 3-1 win. Cleto s fastball was clocked at 100 mph as late as the 7th inning. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Memphis offense was held in check for a second straight night, falling to Oklahoma City 3-2. John Gant gave up three runs on five hits in eight frames, tying the season-long outing for a Redbird starter. Nick Martini and Adolis Garcia each collected a pair of hits while Carson Kelly and Breyvic Valera drove in the runs. FOR THE RECORD: - The Redbirds are one game behind the best record through 77 games in franchise history (47-30, 2000) - A win today would be the second-earliest 47th win by games in franchise history (77, 2000) - Memphis is one of 9 teams in MiLB with 46+ wins STREAK RESISTANT: Memphis enters tonight having dropped three straight games for the first time since April 24-27. This is just the third streak of three-plus losses in a row this season for the Redbirds, with the season-long being a four-game winless streak from April 13-16. All three losing streaks have involved multiple setbacks against OKC. NOTHING FOR YOU: The Redbirds pitching staff has turned the corner in the last 29 games, holding the opponent to four runs or less in 20 of those contests. The Redbirds have yielded only 89 ER in the last 250.0 innings pitched (3.20 ERA) and have moved into second in the PCL in ERA (3.91). CHANGE IN CULTURE: Memphis finds itself with the third-best record in the league, 1.5 games behind Reno (49-28), thanks to an ever-changing approach to winning games. After leading the league in homers in April (29), the Birds now sit 12th in blasts in June (25). Meanwhile, the pitching staff, which ranked 10th in the league in ERA in April (4.54), rose to second in May (3.84) and is tied for the league s best in June (3.39). RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 33-for- 60 in steal attempts this year, but have found great success recently. Memphis has attempted 19 steals in the last 27 games and has been successful in 16 of the 19 tries. MEMPHIS MASHERS: The Redbirds did not hit a home run yesterday, their second straight game without a blast. Memphis has hit 83 this season, sixth-most in the PCL. Memphis is 32-14 when hitting at least one homer in a game this year. Memphis is way ahead of its pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 83rd homer until game 101, which came on July 25. The Redbirds have already hit 39 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in Memphis all of last year. IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for- 24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 12-for-theirlast-27 (.444) over the last 38 games. Overall, pinchhitters are 17-for-51 (.333) on the season. Nine different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Chad Huffman s four knocks. STOP HITTING ME: The Birds have now been hit 51 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL (two teams, 29). Todd Cunningham has been hit 13 times this year, which is the most in the PCL. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 51 runs in the first inning and 39 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition 90-50 in the game s first two frames. The +40 discrepancy is countered, though, by Memphis being just +9 over the course of the year from innings 3-9 and extras. Memphis has scored first in 49 of its 73 games this season, which is the most in the PCL. However, the Redbirds are 32-17 overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league (.653, 9th). GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds have excelled in extra-inning games this season, posting a perfect 6-0 record in such contests. Memphis is one of two PCL teams that remain unbeaten in extra-inning games (Colorado Springs 3-0), while the six wins are the most in the circuit. The Birds have outscored the opposition 10-1 in extras this year. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals full-season minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories: - HR: Wisdom (13, t-1), Bader (12, t-4) - RBI: Wisdom (45, 2nd), Martini (41, t-3) - SB: Garcia (9, 4th), Tovar (8, t-5) - Wins: Flaherty (8, 1st), Weaver (6, t-5), Gallen (6, t-5) - ERA: Gallen (2.24, 1st), Flaherty (2.29, 2nd) - Strikeouts: Flaherty (93, 1st), Gallen (79, 2nd) MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES ALL-STAR SELECTIONS: The PCL announced today that Carson Kelly, Ryan Sherriff, and Luke Weaver have been selected to represent the Redbirds in the Triple-A All-Star Game. For Kelly, it his third All-Star appearance, joining Peoria (Midwest League, 14) and Springfield ( 16). Sherriff pitched the Triple-A All-Star Game a year ago while Weaver was named a mid-season All-Star for the first time in his career. MAYERS MOVES UP: The Cardinals made a series of roster moves Sunday, plucking three players from the Redbirds roster. Mike Mayers was the lone pitcher recalled by St. Louis. Mayers appeared in four games last season for the Cardinals and had rounded into form recently with Memphis. At the time of his promotion, he was eighth in the league in ERA (3.74) and had pitched to a 0.87 ERA (3 ER/31.0 IP) over his last five starts. GRICHUK GONE: Randal Grichuk was recalled as well after appearing in 14 games with Memphis. He made his presence known, hitting six homers, five of which came in the last six games. He rejoined St. Louis having hit safely in eight straight games overall (11-for-37,.297, 2 2B, 5 HR, 8 R, 7 RBI). AND VOIT GETS THE CALL: Additionally, the Cardinals purchased the contract of Luke Voit, who grew up just outside of St. Louis and made his Major League debut with an HBP in his first plate appearance Sunday night. Voit was an All-Star caliber performer for Memphis, hitting.322 with 12 HR and 48 RBI in his first taste of Triple-A. He had already established a new career-high in doubles (23) and ranked among league leaders in 2B (t-1), OBP (.406, 4th), and average (10th). SO IN THEIR PLACE: Memphis added three players to the roster yesterday with Chad Huffman returning from St. Louis and Zac Gallen and Adolis Garcia joining from Double-A Springfield. Huffman played in 12 games for the Cardinals, hitting.286 (4-for-14) in his first MLB appearance since 2010. Gallen and Garcia each made their Triple-A debuts yesterday. Gallen was St. Louis third-round pick last year out of the University of North Carolina and started the year in High-A. Garcia is in his first year with the Cardinals after playing the last five years in Cuba with a brief stint in Japan. TWO (OR THREE) OLIVES: Nick Martini collected another multi-hit game last night, going 2-for-4 with a triple. It marked the fourth multi-hit game for the Memphis outfielder in his last six games (11-for-24,.458, 3B, HR, 4 R, 6 RBI). After suffering through a 2-for-24 skid from June 7-16, Martini has reached base safely in seven of eight games, driving in nine runs in the process. Since joining the Redbirds on May 6, 15 of his 26 RBI have come with two outs, six have given Memphis the lead, and three have proved to be the gamewinning RBI. FULL MONTY: Mark Montgomery tossed a scoreless ninth inning last night continuing his tremendous campaign. Montgomery is tied for third in the league in holds (7) and ranks among league relievers in fewest baserunners/9 IP (8.93, 2nd) and lowest opponents average (.185, 3rd). He has allowed runs in only nine of his 27 outings, and has posted a sub-3.00 ERA in each month. A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: All-Star Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 31 games, tied for second-most in the PCL. Despite the heavy workload, the southpaw ranks third among league relievers in fewest baserunners allowed per 9 IP (9.61) and fourth in lowest walk rate per 9 IP (1.56). Eight of the 14 runs Sherriff has allowed this year have come in two of his outings. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.69 ERA (6er/32ip). PROSPECTS ON THE MOUND: With the addition of Jack Flaherty from Double-A Springfield, the Redbirds currently possess three of the top starting pitching prospects in the St. Louis organization (BA/ MLB.com rank): Luke Weaver (#2/#3), Flaherty (#11/#5), and Marco Gonzales (#13/#19). All three were selected in the first round of their respective drafts: Gonzales (13th, 13), Weaver (27th, 14), Flaherty (34th, 14), and join Zac Gallen (106th, 13) as top 105 picks in the rotation. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, seven of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Jack Flaherty (#11), Marco Gonzales (#13), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29). THE ROSTER: Of the 24 players who comprise Memphis active roster, 20 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 13 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with nine players combining for 318 games played.
