Non-Conference SATURDAY BRINGS SECOND GAME AGAINST TOP-25 OPPONENT Concluding a stretch of six out of seven games away from home, Green Bay meets its second top-25 opponent of the season on Saturday afternoon, playing at No. 15/15 Miami. The undefeated Hurricanes are 8-0 in 2013-14 and most recently posted an impressive 70-61 victory over No. 24 Illinois on Tuesday. Green Bay looks to bounce back after seeing its four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night at Georgia State. The Phoenix offense struggled, shooting a season-low 28.8 percent against the Panthers. Senior Keifer Sykes led the Phoenix with 16 points including a trio of three-pointers, but he was the only player to reach double figures. Sykes is the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week after being named the tournament MVP last week. It was the senior s 11th career player of the week award, breaking the Horizon League record. Sykes has won 11 of the past 38 weekly awards handed out by the league. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. INSIDE THE SERIES: Saturday s meeting will be the fourth all-time between Green Bay and Miami and first since 2005. In the only other matchup in Coral Gables, back on Jan. 3, 1987, Green Bay posted a 62-45 victory over the Hurricanes. 2. AMONG THE NATION S BEST: Sykes has been recognized this preseason with numerous accolades. In addition to earning a spot on the Naismith Award Watch List, the Chicago native has earned spots on the John R. Wooden Award Watch List and the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as one of the nation s top point guards. 3. FLORIDA FLASHBACK: Green Bay returns to Florida just 10 days after winning three games in three days to claim the title at the 2014 Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The Phoenix used stifling defense to defeat East Carolina, Evansville and Florida Gulf Coast. The opponents combined to average 52 points per game on just 34 percent shooting from the field. With 1,609 career points, Sykes is ranked ninth in program history and needs 11 points Saturday to move into eighth place (Richard Sims, 1984-88 - 1619). With 307 more points, Sykes will move into second place on the scoring ledger. With 391 more points, Sykes will join all-time leading scorer Tony Bennett (2,285) as the second Phoenix player to score at least 2,000 career points. The senior point guard is also currently sixth on the program s career assist chart. HOT STARTS: While in Florida, Green Bay jumped out to quick starts in two of the three games, and used excellent first-half defense to build halftime leads in every game. Against East Carolina and Florida Gulf Coast, Green Bay held the opponent without a point for nearly eight minutes of action. The three opponents averaged 22 points on 26.8 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of action. WARDLE KOMBAT: Green Bay held Florida Gulf Coast to just 45 points and 27.3 percent shooting, both season lows for a Phoenix opponent. It was the lowest field goal percentage allowed by head coach Brian Wardle s team against a Division I opponent since March 5, 2013 (Milwaukee, 26.8%). In Wardle s career at the helm, the Phoenix has held 16 opponents to below 50 points and seven opponents have failed to shoot 30 percent from the field. PHO SLAMMA JAMMA: Last season, Green Bay tallied 97 dunks in 31 games, an average of 3.1 per contest. In 2014-15, the Phoenix has 23 dunks in seven games (3.3), with senior Greg Mays tallying 11 and senior Keifer Sykes flushing home eight dunks. Mays has 83 career dunks and the 6-foot Sykes has 44. The high-flying Phoenix was dubbed Pho Slamma Jamma by the Anchorage Daily News during the 2013 Great Alaska Shootout. A-MAYS-ING: Greg Mays had the best season of his career in 2013-14, averaging 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and one block per game. Now a senior and the team s second leading scorer, Mays has upped his scoring to 12.2 points per game with five double-digit efforts. He is shooting 73.1 percent (19-26) from the free-throw line. SWAT TEAM: Former Phoenix standout Alec Brown may have rewritten the program block records, but he was not alone as a Phoenix eraser in 2013-14, helping Green Bay finish second nationally in blocks per game (7.2) and break the school record with 223. It marked the fourth-straight season that the program had set a single-season record for blocked shots. Without Brown, Green Bay blocked 12 shots against UIS, tied for the third-most in program history. Sophomore newcomer Henry Uwadiae, displaying his 7-foot-5 wingspan, rejected five shots in just six first-half minutes, and seven other players tallied at least one. Green Bay posted a 7-1 record on the road in league play, and with Alec Brown in the lineup the Phoenix was unbeaten (7-0). Dating back to 2012-13, Green Bay has won 10 of its past 11 road games in Horizon League play. HOME SWEET HOME With two early wins at the Resch Center, Green Bay has now posted a 49-13 home record in four-plus seasons under head coach Brian Wardle. Last season, the Phoenix went 13-4 at home but actually lost its final two games at the Resch Center. RESERVE ROLES Geen Bay received a big lift from its bench in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Against East Carolina, senior Alfonzo McKinnie scored nine points, sophomore Turner Botz tallied six points, three rebounds and two assists and freshman Daeshon Francis posted five points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. For the tournament, Green Bay s bench made 14-of-26 shots from the field. On Monday, the reserves contributed 34 points in a win over Minnesota-Duluth. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY Sophomore Turner Botz has used his shots efficiently in his two seasons with the Phoenix. Botz made 7-of-15 three-pointers as a freshman. The 6-foot-7 sophomore is off to a hot start this season, knocking down 5-of-8 triples. LEAGUE PREVIEW In the preseason Horizon League voting, Green Bay was selected to repeat as the league s regular season champion, obtaining 32 of 41 first-place votes. Senior Keifer Sykes was selected to repeat as the Horizon League Player of the Year. Junior Jordan Fouse, who has earned a spot on the Horizon League s All-Defensive Team the past two seasons, appeared on the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR The 2014-15 version of the Phoenix will have an international flavor, featuring players from three other countries. Sophomore Tevin Findlay (Malton, Ontario) represents Canada, sophomore Henry Uwadiae hails originally from Benin City, Nigeria, and freshman Kerem Kanter is a native of Istanbul, Turkey. Green Bay will also have players from three different states, including five from Illinois, four from Wisconsin and one from Indiana. NO 7-FOOTERS BUT STILL TALL Despite coaching a team without 7-foot-1 NBA Draft Pick Alec Brown for the first time, Wardle will still have lots of height and length at his disposal. The 13 Phoenix players have an average height of 6-foot-5 3/4 with sophomore newcomer Henry Uwadiae standing tallest at 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-5 wingspan. Seven players, including Uwadiae, Mays, Kanter, McKinnie, Lowe, Fouse and Botz, stand at 6-foot-7 or higher. PERCENTS RETURNING Head coach Brian Wardle brings back four starters from the 2013-14 team which won 24 games. Joining Sykes is senior Greg Mays and juniors Jordan Fouse and Carrington Love. Green Bay s four returning starters and nine players returning overall accounted for 70.7 percent of the team s points, 78.1 percent of the rebounds and 81.6 percent of the assists in 2013-14. TRIPLE THREATS In 2013-14, Green Bay ranked last in the Horizon League in three-point field goals made per game. That number was fine for Wardle, who is more concerned with defensive three-point field goal percentage (Green Bay ranked first,.319). Green Bay is again last in the league in three-pointers made per game (4.8) and first in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.4%, 29-206). TOUGH COMPETITION Green Bay s non-conference schedule will again challenge Wardle s team before the begins Horizon League play. On Nov. 19, the Phoenix faced a topfive opponent (No. 2/2 Wisconsin) for the first time since 1995-96. This week, the Phoenix traveled south to play two tough opponents on the road. After playing at Georgia State on Dec. 4, the Phoenix faces No. 17/20 Miami on Dec. 6. Georgia State, the Sun Belt champions and winners of 25 games last season, will make a return trip to Green Bay later in December, playing at the Resch Center on

MID-MAJOR POLLS Including Georgia State, the Phoenix will face or potentially face five different teams appearing in the CollegeInsider.com Top-25 Mid-Major Poll. Last week, Green Bay defeated two teams in the poll - Evansville and FGCU. The Phoenix ranks seventh in the CollegeInsider.com poll and 11th in the Mid- Major Madness Top-15. COMPETE, DEFEND, REBOUND Wardle has preached Compete, Defend and Rebound since he took over as the program s head coach in 2010-11. The mantra unveils itself in the team s defensive statistics. Green Bay has led the Horizon League in field goal percentage in each of the past two seasons, including holding opponents to just 39.4 percent from the field in 2013-14, the lowest for the program since 1996-97. The Phoenix ranked second in the league in rebounding margin in 2013-14 at plus-3.2. SEVENTY FOR SUCCESS In 2013-14, Green Bay posted a perfect 17-0 record when scoring 70 or more points, including 9-0 when scoring 80 or more points. Defensively, seventy was also a bit of a magic number as Green Bay was 19-2 when holding opponents to less than 70 points. Last Time Out: Georgia State 72, Green Bay 48 Georgia State 72, Green Bay 48 For the first time this season, Green Bay (5-2) did not score first on Thursday night, and it turned out to be a sign of things to come as the Phoenix offense struggled and Georgia State (6-2) returned home with a 72-48 victory. The game was tied 4-4 early as the teams traded baskets, but the Panthers rattled off a 15-2 run over the next six-plus minutes to lead 19-6 and led by double digits for the rest of the night. Georgia State made things worse for its guests late in the half, tallying the final 11 points to lead 42-18 at intermission. The Panthers made 18-of-29 shots in the opening 20 minutes and Green Bay knocked down only 8-of-29. Keifer Sykes led the Phoenix out of halftime by nailing a trio of three-pointers in the first few minutes to cut the lead to 15, but Georgia State immediately responded with a 10-0 run. Sykes finished with 16 points to lead the Phoenix, but the visitors did not have another player reach double figures. When the Phoenix opponent scored less than 60, including four times in the forties, Green Bay was 12-0. NORTH OF NINETY Green Bay scored 90 or more points five times in 2013-14 en route to the highest single-season scoring average in the program s Division I history (74.3). The team was the first in the program s Division I history to reached 90 five times in a season. The team s scoring average was the highest for a Phoenix team since 1971-72. FOUSE OF FURY Fouse has made life challenging on opposing scorers in his Phoenix career. Last season, the 6-foot-7 junior held the Horizon League s top-six non-green Bay scorers to an average of 9.8 points on 28.9 percent shooting in 11 total games. BRIAN WARDLE Head Coach Fifth Season as Head Coach Alma Mater: Marquette 2001 Hometown: Willowbrook, Ill. Now with four seasons under his belt as the head men s basketball coach at Green Bay, Brian Wardle has certainly placed his imprint in every facet of the program, and the result has been championship level basketball. In 2013-14, Wardle guided the Phoenix to a 24-7 overall record and a 14-2 mark in Horizon League action which secured the program s first conference championship since 1995-96. The season included a 12-game winning streak and a 7-0 start to league play. The Phoenix also received votes in national top-25 polls for the first time in 18 seasons. During the non-conference season, Green Bay earned third place in the Great Alaska Shootout and posted a 75-72 victory over the eventual regular season and tournament champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Phoenix played in the postseason for the second-straight season, making the program s first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament in 22 years. After the 2013-14 season, Wardle was honored with multiple awards, including being named the Horizon League Coach of the Year, the Skip Prosser Man of the Year and the NABC District 12 Coach of the Year. Several standout players have joined the program under Wardle s watch, including All-Horizon League big man and 2014 NBA Draft pick Alec Brown. On June 26, 2014, Brown was selected as the 50th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns, becoming just the fifth NBA Draft pick in program history. In his three seasons at Green Bay, Brown has been a three-time All-Region and All-League selection and is the only player in program or Horizon League history to tally more than 1,500 points, 750 rebounds and 300 blocked shots. As a junior, the 7-foot-1 Brown continued to develop his skillset and shot over 40 percent from long range in final two seasons in the program. Under Wardle s watch, Green Bay has also recruited and developed Keifer Sykes, the 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year and a two-time All-League and all-district performer. After his junior campaign in 2013-14, Sykes was named the program s first Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American since 1995-96. Racine native Jordan Fouse is another talented recruit to make an impact as a freshman. In 2012-13, Fouse became the first Horizon League freshman to lead the league in rebounding since 1995-96 and broke the Green Bay freshman records for rebounds and steals in a season. Along with Brown, Fouse was named to the Horizon League All-Defensive Team in 2012-13 and 2013-14. He broke the program s single-season steals record as a sophomore. In 2012-13, Green Bay finished 18-16 overall and tied for third place in the Horizon League standings with a 10-6 record. The Phoenix won two conference tournament games for the first time 1998 before losing on a desperation three-pointer to top-seeded Valparaiso in the semifinals. After the season, which included a 49-47 win over BIG EAST champion Marquette on Dec. 19, Green Bay earned a berth into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Wardle preached a motto of compete, defend and rebound when he was hired on April 15, 2010, and the 2012-13 team began to embody this mantra. In conference play, Green Bay led the Horizon League in rebounding margin, field goal percentage defense and blocked shots. In 2011-12, Green Bay won its last five regular season games and eight of its last 11 contests overall to finish the season at 15-15. The Phoenix improved its overall win total and finished at 10-8 in the Horizon League. Green Bay s non-conference schedule ranked among the 10 toughest nationally as the Phoenix played road games against three NCAA Tournament teams - Marquette, Wisconsin and Virginia. Former Green Bay Director of Athletics Ken Bothof announced the hiring of Wardle as Green Bay s head men s basketball coach on April 15, 2010. Wardle, who at the time was the youngest active head coach in NCAA Division I basketball, is the sixth head coach ever to pilot in the Phoenix program. Wardle, 34, had spent the previous five seasons as a Phoenix assistant coach from 2005-10 under Tod Kowalczyk. During his assistant coaching tenure, the Phoenix totaled 92 victories, an average of 18.4 wins per season. Among his duties, he served as the team s primary recruiting and player evaluation coach. With a 44-24 (.647) record in his final two years as an assistant, the Phoenix made back-to-back appearances in the College Basketball Invitational, the program s first postseason trips since 1996. The 24 Horizon League wins during that stretch were the most in back-to-back years dating back to 1995-96 and 1996-97. During his time at Green Bay, Wardle developed five players--mike Schachtner, Ryan Tillema, Terry Evans, Troy Cotton and Rahmon Fletcher-who reached the 1,000-point plateau. Tillema and Fletcher each claimed first-team All-Horizon League honors, while Schachtner was a two-time second-team performer. Wardle came to the Phoenix after two years as director of basketball operations at his alma mater of Marquette University (2003-04, 2004-05), where he worked under his college coach, Tom Crean. The Golden Eagles earned National Invitation Tournament berths both years, and reached the quarterfinals of the postseason event in 2004. A pair of current NBA players, Travis Diener and Steve Novak, played for Marquette during Wardle s time on staff. Prior to accepting the Green Bay job, he spent the final three months of his Marquette tenure as an assistant coach. Wardle currently ranks as the school s seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,690 career points. He averaged double figures all four years from 1997-98 through 2000-01, and led the Golden Eagles in scoring in each of his final three seasons in Milwaukee. Wardle also ranks among the school s all-time top 10 in 3-point field goals made (197) and free throw percentage (.811). During his collegiate career, Wardle helped guide the Golden Eagles to a pair of National Invitation Tournament appearances (1998, 2000) and was voted team captain each of his last two seasons. As a senior at Marquette, Wardle was mentored by Crean, who is now the head coach at Indiana University, and Kowalczyk, the current University of Toledo head coach. He tossed in a career-high 18.8 points per game his senior year to rank second in Conference USA. Following the season, he captured first-team all-conference honors, becoming the first Marquette player to be such honored. Wardle was also chosen to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 11 second team. During his freshman season, he was named the C-USA Sixth Man of the Year and also was tabbed to the all-freshman team. Wardle graduated from Marquette with a bachelor s degree in communication studies in 2001 and was a Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll member each of his final three seasons. In addition, he received Marquette s 2000 Hank Raymonds Sportsmanship Award and the 2001 McCahill Leadership Award. Following his graduation, Wardle played one season in the National Basketball Association Developmental League for Fayetteville (Ark.) and one with Rockford (Ill.) of the Continental Basketball Association. A Willowbrook, Ill., native, Wardle was a two-time all-state selection for Hinsdale Central High School, where he ranks as the school s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. He led the Red Devils to a 55-7 record over his final two years and was an honorable mention selection on the USA Today All-USA Team.
