AWGA Corner with Phyllis Millan CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP September 15 and 16! I know many of you will say that's nice, but I'm not playing cause there is no way I can win! or I don't like my scores posted. It wasn't until 1552 that Mary Queen of Scots first played the game (but she had to build her own course St. Andrews). Women kept playing and pioneers like Babe Zaharis fought to open up the sport for more women. In 1950 The Ladies Professional Golf Association was formed to give women more golfing opportunities. Here we are, 68 years later, and women golfers are still fighting and working hard to have the same opportunities as men golfers. I believe that by participating in the Club Championship, I'm continuing to support all those brave women who put on long skirts, and bloomers, and hit the links when they were not wanted. We show ourselves, the men, and other ladies that we support the sport of women's golf! Golf has brought me some of my life's best (and less than fun) moments. I've made lifelong friends. I'll be at the Club Championship even though my name will probably never be on that trophy. I'll be there competing and cheering on all my fellow competitors. Why? Because that's what makes women's golf special. A fun, non-competitive day of golf will be the Pumpkin Latte Scramble on Saturday, September 29th. We have had great participation from ladies who work or who just are not sure about golfing with the 18-holers. We want you beginners, you I only golf with my husband, and you I've got to get the hubby to watch the kids golfers. Come have a fun day on the links. It s only $5.00 to play and you get a round of golf, prizes, and F&B voucher. Sign-up in the Golf Shop. The hot days of August were filled with a LOT of golf. We had a Nassau with Pam, Holli, and April winning in "A", and Julie, Evelyn, and Carla winning in "B". Then our What's your Card game, which we all found maddening and confusing but FUN with Kathleen, Linda, Jennie, and Pam taking 1 st place and Sandra, Pam, Evelyn, and Phyllis taking 2 nd place. We journeyed to Charbonneau Golf Course for the Annual Pro-AM with all of our Pro's captaining teams. We appreciated being invited to play and we had some big winners! In top-10 gross amateurs were Marcia Fisher and Chris Oviat; Net top-10 Julie Retzlaff and Paige Vancil (Steve's daughter). Tying for 3 rd in the Stableford Team competition was Pearl, Alexis, Linda and Chris captioned by Robert Fisher; and T5 was David Brown, Pam, Sandra, Krystal, and Starr. Taking home some "big bucks" in the skins game were Sandra Lawrence and Linda Ignowski. Our Pros were very respectable with 1 st Gross- Bryce Fisher, and T2 Gross- Rob Gibbons and David Brown, with our Teaching Pro, John Cassidy finishing 4 th. The always gracious Marcia Fisher hosted the inaugural 7Timer Golf Tournament on the 17 th with a full field of ladies from Arrowhead and many other clubs. It was great fun, and we all enjoyed a delightful dinner on her patio afterward while trying to chip onto the practice hole across the creek. Marcia, you are the Best! A big shout out to Julie Retzlaff, Alexis Brandvold, and Holli Sword for hosting our 2018 Swing with Bling Member-Guest Tournament! It was so much fun. Thank you for your efforts! Congrats to Deb Robison for her Hole-In-One on #14. Don't ask her how it looked going in because, unfortunately, she didn't see it! Her face was priceless as she found it in the hole. When not golfing Deb can be found rafting the Rogue River, or cruising the water ways of Europe. Although she did a quick hop to China a few years ago. Deb is never still, even when she's learning the game of bridge. What energy! Remember Club Championship September 15-16 and Pumpkin Latte Scramble Saturday, Sept. 29 th. Modified Shotgun on September 20 with a short Board Meeting afterwards, please we would really like your attendance at this meeting. ~Phyllis Millan, AWGA President www.golfarrowhead.com 503-829-8080 Page 6
President s Corner with Jerry Calvin August has been full of events at Arrowhead. We just completed our Club Championship and I would like to thank the Golf Shop Staff for a very successful event. They made it a first class operation. I would also like to thank the grounds crew for their efforts on keeping the course in such great shape during the hot weather we had in August. Also for some of the unusual pin placements we had during the event! With that, I would like to say congrats to all of the participants and recognize the division winners. In the Open division Daniel Cheremnov is the Club Champion with a Gross 146. Scott Taylor is the NET Open division leader with a 148. Randy Reid successfully took home his second title in the Senior Division with a 152, while Andy Goddard is the net winner with a 134. In the Super-Senior division, Howard Hugger, with a 163 won on the second hole of the playoff with the net champion, Doug Rank, 137. The Men s Member-Guest was also held in August. If you didn t play in the event, did you see the Flop Wall and Corn Hole around for a couple of day s afterword? Those help make the event a lot of fun! Spectacular event sponsored by Arrowhead. Good Luck to Denny Taylor, Pat O Donnell, and Terry Boyd as they compete in the OGA Senior Amateur at Illahe Hills CC in Salem. If you haven t had the chance to use the reciprocal with Illahe, put it on your list of courses to play, great venue and golf course. The Fall Member-Member event is held on Sept 8-9 with a shotgun start on Saturday at 9:00. The special event will follow Saturday after the round is completed. Sunday s times will be re-paired by score. We will also have a Two-Man Game on September 22-23 with a scramble and double- alternate shot while the greens heal from aerification. As we close out the summer we will also have the four man game the first week-end in October. Make sure to sign up by the deadlines for each event. The Men s Club will hold the next meeting on Sept 15, at approximately 2:00. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please reach out to a Board member or attend the meeting. Please remember to leave the course in better shape than you found it, replace divots, fix ball marks and use sand and seed after you replaced the divot. ~Jerry Calvin, Men s Club President The Coach s Corner with John Cassidy It s not too late to reach personal bests or accomplish those goals you set at the beginning of the season! We still have plenty of good weather and opportunity to get better. I ve had multiple students this season reach personal bests in either score, handicap, or both, and I m certainly proud of the hard work they have put into accomplishing these milestones. Anybody can improve at golf, but nobody gets better without putting in the time. If I could highlight a few things that make improvement in golf a whole lot easier and efficient I would recommend that people: 1. Set attainable goals and a timeline in which you plan to achieve them 2. Hold yourself accountable to those goals and put the necessary time into accomplishing them 3. Learn to understand that you get out of the game what you put into the game. Nobody gets better at golf by accident. We all have more fun when we play well, give yourself the best chance of doing it more often. Send me an email or stop by the shop if you want help creating your plan for lower scores and more fun! ~John Cassidy, Lead Teaching Professional www.golfarrowhead.com 503-829-8080 Page 7
Around the Greens with Adam Vidourek I can t believe that August is finally in the books. To say it was a busy month would be an understatement. I feel like we ve been going 110% non-stop, and we have! The new chipping area is finally open for business, so get out there and fine-tune your short game skills! I feel we had a successful Men s and Women s Member-Guest, as well as the Men s Club Championship. The Golf Course Superintendents Assoc. Crew Tournament also went very well. This event brings out many of my peer Superintendents from around the state. I heard many nice compliments of the golf course as well as major props to the food and beverage service and tournament set up. Nice work Becca, Jessica and Scott! They were also very appreciative of the Arrowhead membership for allowing them to treat their crews to a spectacular day at a spectacular golf course. After a record-dry summer season, it sure helped us out in the end of August with the cooler than normal temperatures. Even though it didn t rain much, the cooler weather allowed the turfgrass to rejuvenate a little. Early September is looking absolutely perfect weather-wise, so hopefully it holds up through aeration! Aeration is scheduled directly after the Women s Club Championship, the week of the 17 th. We will do the normal routine of front nine greens Monday, back nine greens Tuesday, and tees and approaches the rest of that week and potentially the following week as well. However, this schedule is weather dependent, so if the rains move in, it may be rescheduled. Please remember to fix ball marks and fill divots! We've added sand and seed buckets to the range tees, so please use those as much as possible! Enjoy your September golf! ~Adam Vidourek, Superintendent Legend s Bar and Grill Summer Hours Mon-Thurs: 11am-10pm, Friday: 11am-11pm, Saturday*: 7am-11pm, Sunday*: 7am-9pm *Breakfast served Saturday & Sunday only 7am 12pm The NFL season is back!!
