Numbers in front of opponent is UMass ranking / opponent ranking (USCHO.com) At stake for UMass There are a number of streaks on the line for the Minutemen in tonight s contest with Boston College: «The Minutemen can continue on their best start in Hockey East history with a win tonight. UMass is aiming for its fifth Hockey East win. In five of the previous nine years in Hockey East, UMass won five or fewer games all year in league play. «UMass can win its fourth straight league game, something never done before in nine previous seasons. UMass slapshots No. 9 Massachusetts won its first weekend sweep of Merrimack since 1995 with two convincing victories; 2-0 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday. With the wins, the Minutemen were able to stay in first place in Hockey East for another week and enter the nation s top ten for the first time ever. «The Minutemen have held 12 straight foes to 30 shots or less. «UMass allowed only 24 shots in the two-game set last weekend. «Only one team has scored four or more goals so far this season. That was Providence on Halloween night with six. About Boston College... Boston College enters tonight s contest ranked No. 3 in both major polls, and are coming off a 2-2 tie with No. 2-ranked New Hampshire on Wednesday night. The Eagles opened the year 3-2-1, including a 1-0 home loss to unranked Notre Dame, but are 2-0-1 in the last three with 4-1 wins over UMass Lowell and Maine, before Wednesday s tie. Ben Eaves leads a balanced BC offense with nine points (3 g, 6 a), while Tony Voce and Patrick Eaves have eight themselves. Matti Kaltiainen has a.903 save percentage and a 1.97 GAA while playing all but 2:12 this season. Streaking... Team Streaks: Winning Streak...............3 (11/1/03-pres.) (Nov. 8) The No. 12 University of Massachusetts hockey team rallied from a 3-2 second-period deficit and scored the final three goals of the game to complete a weekend sweep of Merrimack, 5-3. The win improves UMass record to 7-1-0 overall and the Minutemen sit atop of Hockey East with a 4-1-0 conference mark. UMass came out firing on all cylinders and put three shots on Merrimack freshman goalie Jim Healey, who was seeing his first collegiate action, in the first two minutes. Marvin Degon (Millbury, Mass.) had two of the shots, one while streaking down the left side that nearly slipped through Healey's pads. The Minutemen went on the power play just four minutes into the contest, that turned into a prolonged four-minute advantage after another Merrimack penalty, but the Warriors' defense stood tall and ended UMass' extra-man threat. The Minutemen had three power plays all told in the first period, but couldn't push one across. Merrimack had a great opportunity to take an early lead on a 2-on-1 break but Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.) made saves from in close on Steve Crusco and Justin Mills to keep the game scoreless. However, that was as close as Merrimack would get, firing only three shots on goal on Winer and the UMass defense. Merrimack opened the second period on its first power play of the game, but a Warriors' penalty killed it and the Minutemen went on their fourth power play of the evening, but couldn't get set up in the zone and Merrimack killed off yet another extra-man chance. After the Warriors went on the power play, but it was the Minutemen that capitalized on the Merrimack attack. Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) wristed a high shot after a Merrimack turnover in the UMass zone that trickled past Healey at the 5:42 mark, with an assist to Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) and Thomas Pöck (Klagenfurt, Austria). The goal, Warner's first career shorthanded netter, set off an offensive explosion by both teams as the squads combined for seven goals in a 12-minute span. The Minutemen went up 2-0 just a minute later when Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) picked up a loose puck and slid a low shot that beat Healey to the far right post. After Merrimack tallied three goals in a three-minute span, including two on the power play, the Minutemen regained the lead when Mauldin tallied goal number two on a beautiful power-play netter at the 13:11 mark. Mauldin one-timed a Chris Capraro (Medford, Mass.) pass from the left slot to even the score at three. Degon also assisted on the goal. UMass then went up 4-3 when Stephen Werner (Chevy Chase, Md.) came out of the penalty box after a penalty and Pöck fed him with a length-of-the-ice pass. Werner took the pass, put a deke on Healey and slid the puck into the back of the wide-open net at the 17:09 mark for his second goal of the season. Jeff Lang (Westwood, Mass.) also assisted on the goal. The Minutemen had another excellent opportunity when they went on their seventh power play of the game early in the third period, and after having several good looks including a post shot by Degon, the Warriors stopped the attack again. However, shortly after killing off the Minuteman penalty, UMass went up 5-3 on Warner's second goal of the game. Warner blistered a shot past Healey after he had come out to cut off the angle. The puck caught him scrambling and past his outstretched pads for a 5-3 margin at the 16:49 mark, which was the final tally. The Minutemen outshot the Warriors 25-12 for the contest and Winer made nine saves to earn his seventh win of the season. Off the ice news... «The biggest news surrounding the UMass hockey team was the renegotiation of Head Coach Don Toot Cahoon s contract. The coach, in his fourth year at the helm at UMass, signed a four-year contract extension, good through the 2007-08 season. He will coach his 500th career game this weekend against Providence on Saturday night. He has a 222-233-43 career record. He won 19 games last season after winning only 16 combined the previous two seasons. Road warriors... «UMass set an ongoing school record with its sixth straight road win, dating back to last year, in Friday s 2-0 victory over Merrimack. All six of the wins have come against Hockey East teams, and three of them were against teams ranked in the top 15 nationally. The Minutemen have won all but one of the games by at least two goals. Defending home ice as well... «The Mullins Center is starting to turn into a strong home-ice advantage. UMass is 4-0-0 this season when scoring four or more times and 21-1-0 since the start of last year when accomplishing the feat. Since Head Coach Don Cahoon took the reigns, the Minutemen are 30-4- 1 when netting at least four goals. Among the elite... «The Minutemen moved up three spots in the USCHO.com national poll after last weekend s sweep of Merrimack. UMass is now ranked a program-best ninth, placing it in unfamiliar territory and among the nation s elite programs. The Minutemen have the nation s second-best winning percentage with a 7-1-0 record (.875; only St. Cloud State at 7-0-1 is better), and rank in the top 15 in six of the eight team categories. Against ranked teams... «Despite struggling in the all-time annals against ranked hockey teams, the Minutemen are slowly starting to become giant-killers. Under Head Coach Don Cahoon, the Minutemen are 10-41-4 all-time against ranked teams, including 5-12-1 last season. However, UMass is 4-3-0 against ranked teams in the last seven games. Five of the seven games came against teams ranked in the top four of the country. Turning the tide... «In 2002-03, the Minutemen went 0-12-1 when scoring two or fewer goals in a game. Already this year, the UMass defense has stiffened up and the Minutemen are 2-1-0 when tallying two or fewer goals in a contest. The lone blemish on that mark is a 6-2 loss to Providence on Halloween night. UMass is 6-52-3 all-time under Head Coach Don Cahoon when tallying two or fewer goals. Red-hot November... «The saying that it takes a little while to get going can certainly ring true for the Minutemen. UMass has won five November games in a row and eight of the last nine during the second-to-last month of the year. Since the start of last year, UMass is 9-3-0 in November, with two of the losses coming by one goal. Specialty report... «The UMass power play has slowed down off its hot pace it set at the start of the season. Over the last five games, the Minutemen are only 3-of-23 (13.0 percent), after opening the season 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) in the first three games. However, the UMass penalty-kill unit is continuing at its torrid early-season pace. The Minutemen have allowed only four goals on 36 chances, with two of the goals coming last Saturday night against Merrimack. Prior to Saturday s win over the Warriors, UMass had stopped 28-of-30 power-play chances. Hold the lead... «The Minutemen continue to put the pressure on opponents when holding the lead. UMass has yet to lose a lead this season, and are a perfect 3-0-0 when leading after one period and 6-0-0 when ahead after two periods. Since the start of last season, the Minutemen are 13-0-1 when leading after the initial 20 minutes and 16-0-0 when up after two stanzas. It has been 52 games (2001-02 season) since UMass lost a game when leading after two periods. Stingy defense... «The UMass defensive effort has been very solid so far this year, holding seven of eight opponents to three or fewer goals. The lone blemish on that mark was a 6-2 loss to 14th-ranked Providence on Halloween night. Over last weekend, the Minutemen held Merrimack to a grand total of 24 shots, including only three in the first period of both games combined.

He was named UMass first preseason All-America in school history when he was named a second-team selection by insidecollegehockey.com. He was the first Minuteman since 199697 to score 40 points in a season and was UMass first-ever finalist for the Walter Brown Award. He scored his first multi-point game of the season with two assists against Providence, and has scored at least two points in three straight games. Last year, he didn t have 10 points until his 12th game of the season. The two points against Merrimack on Saturday night marked his 22nd career multi-point game. Both of his points against Merrimack on Saturday came on goals, his first multi-goal game of the season. He and teammate, Thomas Pöck, give the Minutemen bona fide Hobey Baker candidates. The senior forward has scored five points (3 g, 2 a), including his first career multi-goal game against Merrimack on Nov. 8. He has scored in three straight games, the second-longest streak of his career. Page 5 «Massachusetts Hockey News

Head Coach Don Cahoon... Don Toot Cahoon enters his fourth season at the helm of the University of Massachusetts hockey program after a stellar 2002-03 season. Last year s team won the second-most games in school history posting a 19-17-1 record, advancing to the Hockey East Semifinals for the first time in school history and recording the highest Hockey East finish in school history. For his efforts, Cahoon was named Hockey East Coach of the Year and New England Coach of the Year. Cahoon accomplished all this with a group that consisted of only five juniors and seniors. The 2001-02 edition of the UMass hockey team was a young squad that earned eight wins throughout the season. However, the Minutemen were extremely competitive, appearing in 13 one-goal games. The 2001-02 team also captured Hockey E a s t s prestigious Charles E. Holt Te a m Sportsmanship Award for the first time in school history. In his first year with the Minutemen, he guided UMass to an 8-22-4 record, including seven Hockey East wins, which was the second most league wins in school history. Perhaps the most impressive statistic in Cahoon s three years have been the 20 Hockey East Academic All-Conference performers that have played under him, which is second behind Northeastern in Hockey East over that stretch.
