RichmondSpiders Conference Website:...www.atlantic10.com 2015-16 Richmond Women s Basketball PRESEASON AWARDS Richmond has been chosen by the coaches of the Atlantic 10 to finish sixth in the league behind George Washington, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham and Saint Louis, respectively. Junior guard Janelle Hubbard, the Spiders top-returning scorer, was recognized as a Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection after posting 13.9 points per game a season ago. LAST TIME OUT The Spiders used a balanced attack and never wavered despite 14 lead changes and a season-low one made three ball. The Richmond freshmen, Tuuli Menna and Salita Greene set the tone, scoring 10 and nine points, respectively, both career-highs. Greene crashed the glass in a big way, nearly coming away with her first double-double after grabbing 11 boards. Micaela Parson led all scorers with 14 points in just 18-minutes of action due to foul trouble. She worked efficiently making 4-6 shots from the field and going 6-6 from the free throw line while chipping in an assist and three rebounds. Lauren Tolson had eight points and a career-best 12 rebounds in 31 minutes while Janelle Hubbard remained the lone Spider to reach double figures in all four games with 10 points. Quietly, senior Bria Powell tossed in a season-best nine points on 4-11 from the floor. VS. OLD DOMINION The Spiders used a huge third quarter to jump ahead of the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs on Friday afternoon and held off the oposition down the stretch to secure a 62-57 victory to begin the 2015-16 season. Junior guard Janelle Hubbard pocketed 20 points for the seventh time in her career with Micaela Parson and Lauren Tolson pitching in 13 and 12, respectively. Richmond trailed by as many as nine on two occassions in the second quarter but led by as many as 12 in the third. PARSON S CAREER NIGHT Sophomore Micaela Parson posted a then-career high 13 points against the Lady Monarchs. She was 4-8 shooting, 1-3 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line to go with three rebounds and a pair of steals in 22 minutes of action. Parson started at the point guard spot for the first time in her young career and with the Spiders leading by just five with 2:15 to play she hit her lone three ball to put the lead at eight and essentially put the game out of reach. BIG MINUTES FOR FRESHMEN Freshman forwards Tuuli Menna and Salita Greene saw significant action in their collegiate debuts opposite ODU. Menna made the start for the Spiders and played a team-high 33 minutes, scoring six points on 2-6 shooting and grabbing five rebounds. Greene made the most of her 18 minutes, scoring seven points going 1-1 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line. She also hauled in five rebounds for a co-team high with Menna. SALITA GREENE The freshman from Durham, N.C. has given coach Shafer all he could have asked for over her first four games as a Spider. Greene scored seven points and pulled down five boards in her debut in just 18 minutes and exceeded that standard opposite EKU, scoring eight points on 4-5 shooting, three of which were mid-range jump shots, in just 17 minutes off the bench. The freshman then exploded for 11 rebounds and nine points vs. UNCW. 3

MICHAEL SHAFER BECOMES WINNINGEST COACH On Saturday, Jan. 24, 2014, Richmond head coach Michael Shafer became the most winningest coach in Richmond women s basketball history as he notched his 167th-career victory as a Spider over the UMass Minutewomen. Following his 10th season at Richmond, Shafer was 174-141 all-time and with that win surpassed the famous Fanny Crenshaw - Richmond s long-time coach of 35 years. Crenshaw was 166-58-5 over her 35 years (1919-1955) as Richmond s head coach. RVA WELCOMES A-10 TOURNAMENT Last season was the second of a three-year partnership with the Atlantic 10 Conference and the City of Richmond to host the A-10 Women s Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The tournament had been played the previous two years at Hagan Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph s. Last year, Richmond defeated UMass in the first round before falling to Fordham. HUBBARD TAKES ON NEW ROLE Then sophomore Janelle Hubbard entered her second season with the Spiders in a new role as she added a scoring threat off the bench in the first seven games. After scoring at least eight points in those contests, Hubbard moved in the starting line up. The Glenn Dale, Md. native scored double figures in 25 of 32 games last season and averaged 14.8 points per game in the conference. The sophomore surpassed her 700th-career point with a 21-point performance at Duquesne Feb. 18. She currently has 803 points on her young career. RICHMOND ERASES 20-POINT DEFICIT IN OT WIN OVER SLU A 20-0 deficit with eight minutes into the contest didn t scare the Spiders, as Richmond rallied for a 75-72 overtime victory over the Saint Louis Billikens Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Robins Center. After shooting 23 percent in the first half, the two teams went into halftime with the Billikens up 10. Richmond came out with a 12-2 run to tie the score for the first time at the 15:35 mark. Four-straight points in the final 40 seconds of regulation forced the extra period for the Spiders. Richmond outscored SLU 7-4 in overtime to secure the victory. 4

Greene, a 5-11 forward from Durham, N.C. is the all-time leading rebounder at Jordan High School with 1,202. She averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds per game her senior season. Menna was named the 2011 Finnish Basketball Federation U16 Player of the Year. She averaged 10.7 points, 6.7 rebounds in 2013-14 Women s League for Tapiolan Honka. Murphy is a two-time All-Great Neuse River choice. She averaged 24.5 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 2015. 1,000 POINT SCORERS The Spiders have had 21 players in program history reach the 1,000-point plateau, one of which graduated last season. Genevieve Okoro finished her Richmond career ranked ninth in program history with 1,337 points. Just two players, Karen Elsner (2,367) and Brittani Shells have eclipsed 2,000 points. Senior Lauren Tolson has an opportunity this season to reach 1,000 points needing just 306 to get there. Junior Janelle Hubbard is in good position to be the third Spider to reach 2,000 with 823 points through her first two seasons. EUROPEAN TOUR The Richmond women s basketball program took a trip to Europe in early August, during which it visited four countries and several cities within each while also playing three games against Belgian Club teams. The team would pick up two victories and one loss opposite the top tier clubs. Two of which often compete for the European Cup. OLIVIA HEALY OUT FOR THE SEASON Richmond women s basketball head coach Michael Shafer has announced that junior guard Olivia Healy will miss the 2015-16 season while she continues to recover from a knee injury sustained last February. Healy has appeared in 42 games during her Richmond career making 18 starts and averaging 10.0 points per game to go with 5.7 rebounds. She sustained a similar injury that cut her freshman season short. ROBINS CENTER Built in 1972 through the generosity of the E. Claiborne Robins family, the Robins Center underwent a $17 million renovation in 2013-2014 that has transformed it into one of the premier college basketball arenas in the nation, while drawing rave reviews from players, coaches, fans and media. The renovations created a more intimate game day atmosphere and provided enhanced amenities for basketball fans. The renovations to the main arena of the Robins Center included new state-of-the-art LED lighting, midnight blue painted ceiling, four 15 feet by 32 feet video boards, scoreboards, refurbished seats, new premium seating options, new terrace hospitality areas, a refinished/newly painted court and renovated restrooms. The video boards are the largest in the Atlantic 10 conference, and among the largest of any on-campus arena in the ACC or Big East. 5

Shafer guided the Spiders to fivestraight WNIT postseason appearances from 2009-2013 and again in 2015 where the team advanced to the second round. The Spiders were awarded a bye in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament after finishing in the top-4 for the third time in the last five years. Shafer has amassed a 178-141 (.552) record while at Richmond in ten years. On Jan. 24, 2015, he became the winningest women s coach at Richmond when the Spiders defeated UMass for his 167th career triumph. He passed legendary coach Fannie Crenshaw, who guided the Spiders for 35 years. Shafer led Richmond to a 23-9 mark in 2011-12, its most wins since 2008-09 and fewest losses since 2004-05. The National Women s Basketball Insider named Shafer one of the nation s top coaches in 2011-12. Shafer was one of 13 coaches that were recognized. Shafer collected his 100th win against GW in 2012. He is only one of three coaches at Richmond to eclipse the century mark total. Shafer has led Richmond to 20-win seasons in three of the last seven years and has guided the Spiders to six postseason WNIT appearances in that span. In 2008-09, Shafer posted the most successful season in his tenure, after helping guide the Spiders to a 24-10 record, a runner-up appearance in the 2009 Atlantic 10 Tournament and school s fourth bid to the WNIT. The 24-10 record marked the most wins since the 1988-89 season and third best overall record in program history. Prior to his time at Richmond, Shafer spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, serving his last two seasons as the associate head coach. He helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and four Southeastern Conference championships, three regular-season titles and one tournament title. During his tenure, Georgia posted a 273-85 (.762) record and advanced to three NCAA Final Fours, appearing in the 1996 championship game. A proven recruiter, he helped Georgia head coach Andy Landers sign five Top 10 freshmen classes and inked the country s fifth best class in 2005. Shafer signed five high school All-Americans while serving his last three years at Georgia as the Lady Bulldogs recruiting coordinator. In addition, Shafer was instrumental in the development of current WNBA players Coco Miller, Kelly Miller and Deanna Nolan, a 2003 All-Star. Shafer was named as one of the nation s Top 10 assistant women s basketball coaches in an informal internet survey of more than 750 coaches and administrators conducted by womenshoopscoop.com in 2003. His numerous contributions to the program were rewarded in June of 2003 when he was promoted to associate head coach. A 1994 graduate of William & Mary, Shafer earned a spot on the men s basketball team as a walk-on. He served as team co-captain in 1994 and served on the Student-Athletic Council during his senior season. The Athens, Ga. native received a bachelor s degree in business administration from William & Mary and earned his master s degree in sport management from Georgia in 1997. Shafer, 42, has two daughters, Sophie Rinne (10), and Summer Reese (eight). Shafer married his wife, Denise, on Oct. 18, 2015. 8
