Grizzly Wrestling 2018-2019 WHS Wrestling Grizzly Wrestlers Prepare for Another Season NEWS RELEASE November 1, 2018 WHS Wrestling The Wadsworth wrestling program produced another State Champion-Jordan Earnest and another State Finalist-Luke Baughman. Grizzlies also produced five more state placers-joey Baughman-3rd, Michael North-4th, Logan Messer-5th, Clay McComas-7th, and Landen Hacker-7th for a team 3rd place overall finish in the Division I State Championship. In addition, the Grizzlies finished 12-4 in dual matches with a Regional final appearance in the State Duals, a Sectional Team Championship, and District Team Championship. The Grizzlies finished 18th in the country in the Fab 50. This year State Runner-up Luke Baughman, State Placers Michael North, Logan Messer, Landen Hacker, and State Qualifiers Mikey Lewarchick, Dom Loparo, and new to the program Jon List return to lead the rest of the 2018-19 team back to the 16,000 seat Schottenstein Center in Columbus March 8, 9,and 10 at the OHSAA State Championship. The nucleus of the 2018-19 team has worked extremely hard in the off-season, with individual wrestlers posting more than 200 total hours of lifting weights, wrestling at open mats on Thursday nights, and attending summer camps, competing in freestyle events, summer dual meet events, Battlezone team camps, and competing nationally in different events. The 2018-19 team is led by SENIORS: Luke Baughman (Captain), Michael North (Captain) Jacob Herbert, Zach Linn, Robert Schlauch, and Anthony Zollinger. JUNIORS: Mason Beal, Caden Braman, Wesley Gordon, Hunter Griffin, Dom Loparo, Billy Osborne, Daniel Taylor, Devin Orr. SOPHOMORES: Mikey Lewarchick, Landen Hacker, Logan Messer, Garrett Clark, Logan Shiarla, Logan Scandlon and Jamison Jackson will push to make an impact on the season. The Grizzlies are led by a great staff Head Coach Clay Wenger, Assistants: Nick Ranallo, Mike Wenger, and Matt Shiarla. Volunteers: Christian Baughman, Brad Squire, Greg McElroy, Tim Knipl, and Kip Shipley. Team Doctor: Dr. Nick Papas Team Trainer: Ron Burdette. The future looks promising with a strong 9th grade team. They are a determined group with a great deal of potential. In fact, some freshmen will see varsity action. This is the 25th ninth grade class with Youth League experience at Firestone High School, and the entire state has indeed noticed the difference. Over 40 enthusiastic 7th and 8th graders have turned out for the Middle School team. They are coached by Larry Kaufman and assistant coach Jason Joy and Kevin Bux. The three coaches continue to do a great job molding and developing young talent that feeds the high school. They have won several tournaments over the past years and have developed a winning attitude and a very strong work ethic, earning the reputation as one of the best Junior High programs in the state. Some of the incoming freshman class will be battling for a starting spot. FRESHMAN: Mason Brugh-3rd, David Shue-7th, Jacob Walsh- State Qualifier, Connor Frisby, Ben Sigler, and Jaden Janeczek. The Grizzlies have added Hall of Fame and State Champ Coach John Gramuglia as Director of Operations of the program where he will oversee all facets of the program. Our Youth Program has over 80 members with a strong coaching nucleus headed by 1st year head coach Kurt Mellon. Our treasurer Holly Brugh continues her tenure as treasurer to help organize and develop the inner workings of the program and heads up the rest of the mom and dad's for a variety of projects. Our red team finished in fifth in the state led by Jaxon Joy. Jaxon became a State Champion at the OYWA State Tournament. State Runner-up Kade Mellon and Kolt Mellon. Also placing for the Grizzlies were Tommy Hohn-4th, and Calix Lemp-4th. The entire family of coaches are working hard in order to dominate the Suburban League and this area. It is also our goal to continue the tradition of placing wrestlers at the State Tournament and winning the ultimate wrestling honor, an individual State Championship.
