Are you interested in having a 96-gallon tipper cart or curbside recycling service from R&S Waste? If so, you can sign up for a tipper cart or recycling service at any time. Tipper carts cost an extra $1.50 per month. For that price you receive a sturdy 96- gallon waste container from R&S Waste. If the container is lost, stolen, or broken R&S Waste will replace the tipper. Curbside recycling is $5.00 per month and the container is provided. Please contact City Hall for more information at 343-2424. For example: July 4 falls on a Tuesday; therefore, your trash would be picked up on Wednesday and so on. The burn site will open Friday Sunday in the months of April - October. The burn site will be open by appointment at any time of year. The burn site will be open for 7 days prior to the Spring Clean-Up on the 4 th Friday of April. The burn site will be open the first 2 weeks of January to receive Christmas trees. City staff shall make a key available for high-frequency, high volume users, such as lawn and tree contractors, so that they may access the site without setting an appointment.

TAKE PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST THEFT Be aware of your surroundings are there suspicious vehicles and people. Write down descriptions and license platers numbers. Bring to Officer Porter at City Hall during business hours. Time, sound, and visibility are the three main factors that need to be considered when trying to prevent theft from a home. Some questions you might want to ask yourself include: Are my doors locked at all entrances when not at home? Are my windows shut all the way and locked when closed? Is my property well-lit at night motion lights or other lighting? Can I see any of my valuables from outside on the street?

Page 5 NOVEMBER 2018 REMINDER: CEMETERY RULES To better serve all families who entrust their loved ones to our care and visit this cemetery, and to maintain Graceland cemetery in a neat and presentable manner, we have instituted the following guidelines: Decorating a grave with fresh cut flowers arrangements or solar lights is welcomed and encouraged, but these decorations must be contained within a monument vase or set/mounted upon the headstone in a fashion that does not interfere with maintenance. Artificial flowers are only permitted in monument vases. Regardless of the foregoing, artificial flowers, decorations or other ornaments are allowed on the ground during the days immediately before and after Memorial Day. No planting of any kind may be done in the ground at grave sites. Flowers, plants and decorations placed on the ground during the mowing season of April through October will be removed weekly in order to carry out the normal lawn care and maintenance procedures. Flowers placed at the time of an interment will be left a minimum of three days. It is suggested that potted plants from funerals not be left in the cemetery since they will be discarded. Each week during the growing season cemetery personnel will remove unsightly (wilted flowers) decorations. Spring clean-up will begin in early March, weather permitting, and all winter decorations are removed at this time. Fall clean-up begins in October and all summer decorations are removed at this time. It is not possible for cemetery employees to attend to all areas of the cemeteries during normal cemetery hours. As a consequence, there are occasions when flowers and decorations have been stolen. The cemetery cannot assume any liability for decorations placed on burial sites. We recommend that families take this into consideration when selecting flowers or decorations for graves. CITY OF AVOCA SNOW RELATED ORDINANCES 5.6 P Snow Emergency Parking: No person shall park, abandon or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street, alley, or City-owned or leased off-street parking area during any snow emergency for a forty-eight (48) hour period after cessation of such storm. The fine for this violation shall be $25. 4.8 Operation of Snowmobiles: The following regulations shall apply to the operation of snowmobiles within the City: a. Operation of Snowmobiles Restricted. Unless a street, highway, or area is specifically restricted below, snowmobiles may be operated on public ways within the incorporated limits of the City as follows: 1. By any person authorized to operate snowmobiles by the laws of the State of Iowa; and 2. In a single-file manner in the proper lane of traffic, but as close to the curb as possible under existing circumstances; and 3. Snowmobiles traveling on permitted public streets, highways and areas shall not exceed the posted speed limits; and 4. Snowmobiles must be operated in conformance with all traffic controls which would otherwise apply to automobiles; and 5. All snowmobiles operated in permitted areas or streets shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order to prevent excessive and unusual noise; and 6. Snowmobiles may not be operated upon the following public streets, highways or areas within the municipal limits of the city: a. Public parks and recreation areas, or b. Graceland Cemetery, or c. Highway 59, or d. Highway 83, or e. Crocker Street from Highway 59 west to Maple Street, or f. Lyon Street from Highway 59 west to Maple Street, or g. Maple Street from Lyon Street north to Crocker Street, or h. Elm Street from Lyon Street north to Wool Street, or i. Any public sidewalk or any area between a street and the sidewalk. 6.8 J Removal of Snow and Ice Accumulations: It is the responsibility of the abutting property owners to remove snow, ice and accumulations promptly from sidewalks. If a property owner does not remove snow, ice or accumulations within twenty-four (24) hours after being deposited, the City may do so and assess the costs against the property owner for collection in the same manner as a property tax.

M A I N S T R E E T U P D A T E N E W S L E T T E N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 8 Shop Small, Shop Local: Supporting Your Main Street Businesses November 24, 2018 is Shop Small Saturday (sponsored by American Express), and in Avoca it is also the fun-packed family event Holidays on Main. Every year this brings hundreds of customers into the Main Street district, some for the first time and some for the first time in years. It is an excellent day to remind Avocans and our neighbors of all the potential that exists in our town. However there is plenty that can be done year-round to support your Main Street businesses. Even if you live outside of town and can t shop regularly, you can still be an advocate for Avoca s Main Street businesses. Make sure to follow/like/share or comment on social media platforms that your favorite businesses are engaged in. Tag friends who could be interested. Not only will the business owner feel the love directly, but the algorithms that support business popularity will mean their content is shared to a larger audience. Do the same thing if they have a business website or blog where you can subscribe to content! Another armchair support of your Main Street businesses are reviews. Social media platform reviews, search engine platform reviews, all of these promote their business visibility AND make a real impact on customer decisions and enjoyment. Just keep it positive! When you make a satisfying purchase or use a service from a Main Street business, let people know about it! Again, social media is perfect for this (remember to tag the business) but word of mouth is still considered the best method for people to discover businesses. Ask for business cards, and distribute them to friends and family who might take advantage of their services or goods. Finally, actually encouragement is so appreciated by small business owners. Doing it all is exhausting, but hearing real thanks or getting virtual high-fives can be just the reminder they need that it is all worth it. Small business owners are passionate about what they do, so a compliment on their business is a personal compliment. Even if you can t spread the dollars around on November 24, please remember to keep spreading the small business love on that day and every day of the year.
