They had 2018 Hall of Famer Chris Barnes striking out as he was named the winner of the Mark Roth MVP award. The Philadelphia Hitmen would have their struggles as they could not find a striking line to the pocket. In one of the games, it was a one pin difference between the Splitters and the Hitmen. However, the Hitmen could never really find a successful line to the pocket to give the Splitters a match. Manager Jason Couch was proud of his team making it to the championship match. Couch drafted the 2017 PBA Harry Golden Rookie of the Year, Matt Sanders, at the 60th Anniversary Championship in Indianapolis for the PBA League Draft. Barnes became the first two-time recipient of the Mark Roth MVP award. He would do it by striking out in the tenth which is just what the Splitters needed to do. This was the third time that the Atom Splitters won the Elias Cup. The Atom Splitters would collect not only the third Elias Cup and $60,000 for their efforts. The team was made up of Chris Barnes, Tom Daugherty, Dick Allen, Jesper Svenson, and AJ Johnson. The Hitmen consisted of Dom Barrett, Ronnie Russell, Tom Smallwood, Matt Sanders, and Chris Loschetter. He was obviously disappointed in not winning the Elias Cup but was ecstatic that they made it to the championship match. Baker has always been proud of this star-studded Atom Splitters team. For Barnes, he performed well in the tenth frame striking out when he needed to. Page 3 Messenger Continued 2019 Fox FS1 broadcast schedule On May 30, the PBA announced a major broadcast schedule for Fox or FS1. The PBA World Series of Bowling will be live events instead of tape delayed broadcast. The PBA will have a total of 31 televised shows with 19 live events. Some of the events include the Tournament of Champions at Rivera Lanes, the World Series of Bowling at Thunderbowl, and the PBA Doubles. The schedule has double the broadcast time compared to last season and the most in the last 11 years. The PBA Playoffs will have a live start and championship match with the winner earning $100,000. All four Majors will be broadcast live. None of these events have any tournament format yet, so bowling fans will need to check in later for an update. Breakpoint PBA WSOB X Page 4 Last month, the PBA announced the tenth World Series of Bowling. It will be held in March of 2019 at the historic Thunderbowl Lanes, the inaugural site for the PBA World Series of Bowling. The dates will be from March 11th-March 21st. This is also where Tom Smallwood went from unemployment to PBA World Champion. It is hard to believe that this is the tenth edition of the WSOB. There have been a number of historic events. The PBA World Series of Bowling has evolved over the past nine years stated Tom Clark. The 10th edition will be the most electrifying yet, with multiple PBA titles being won live in prime time on national TV on consecutive nights. There will be four different events (three animal patterns and the World Championship) along with a fifth event a special USA vs. The World event. PBA WSOB past highlights: 2009- Smallwood wins PBA World Championship in spite of losing his job at GM. 2011- Chris Barnes becomes the sixth player in PBA History to complete the Triple Crown by winning the PBA World Championship. 2011- Sean Rash would dominate all the animal patterns making all of the championship rounds. Osku Parma would win his first Major at the 2012 PBA World Championship. Parker Bohn III wins his second career Major as he won the PBA World Championship despite getting there late dealing with Hurricane Sandy. Dom Barrett would win his first career Major at the PBA World Championship. There are have been numerous countries represented at the World Series of Bowling. 2015- Gerry Faulkner would become the second African-American to win the PBA World Championship. 2017- at the PBA World Championship Jason Belmonte would win his third major in a single season. PBA Tour Chronicle: A Record Wrecking Week This column is dedicated to the Bowlers Journal International. I will be summarizing BJI articles periodically in the Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter. The grandson of the owner of Luby publishing, Mort Luby, Jr., wrote last month s PBA Tour Chronicle. He talked about the 1967 PBA Tournament of Champions. Until that week, nobody of the PBA would shoot a perfect game on national television. Jack Biondolillo would change PBA history as he would become the first bowler to shoot a perfect game on national television. He would defeat Glen Carlson who would only muster up a 216. Jack would receive a $10,000 bonus for his perfect game on national television. However, he would not go on to win the tournament. Jim Stefanich would become the 1967 Tournament of Champions winner. A rookie named Mike Durbin would make the telecast. He would be making history 17 years later as he became the first bowler to win three TOC titles. Another bowler by the name of Don Johnson would be making his second of his five consecutive years at the TOC. Jack had a long way to go to win the Tournament. The 1967 TOC had one of the highest total tournament purses with 25% of the total purse going to the winner. It ended up with a great ending as Don Johnson and Jim Stefanich tied in the championship game 227 227. In the two frame roll-off, Johnson would start out with a four-six split. Stefanich would take advantage and double to spoil Johnson s chance to win the title. Johnson had a chance to close out the tournament in regulation but left two singles in the tenth to tie at 227 forcing the roll-off. This chronicle also featured an interview with Jim Stefanich. In the interview, he made the comment that he led the tournament by two or three hundred pins over second place. However, he still had one game to go to win the tournament. He was fortunate to win the tournament in the two frame roll-off. Jim Stefanich had won the BPAA All-Star now known as the US Open. He was definitely one of the best bowlers in PBA History. Split Column In 1974, Jim Stefanich rolled the third perfect game on national television in PBA history.

Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter-Editor Interview Page 5 1. Why did you start the newsletter? I wanted to be in the bowling industry somehow, and I had some creative ideas in how to promote bowling. Additionally, I had been an honorary member for seven years. 2. Who helped you when you first started out? Grant Avery, Curtis Deross, Zane Gard, and Erin Smith. 3. When did you decide to post the newsletter on the site for free? In August of 2010. 4. What stories really standout from the last ten years? Pete Weber becoming the first bowler to win the Triple Crown twice at the Tournament of Champions; Jason Belmonte three-peating the USBC Masters; and Kelli Kulick winning the Tournament of Champions in 2010. 5. What is your favorite column in the newsletter? The Strike Column because no other bowling publication has analyzed the greatest bowlers in the world. 6. Have you had guest columns? If yes, who has written a column for you? Yes. Parker Bohn III wrote about his back-to-back wins in 1997; and Dennis Bergendorf helped me write a story for my newsletter when my computer was down. 7. Where do you see the newsletter at ten years from now? I see it possibly becoming a national publication. 8. What new feature could be added in the next year or so? On the Josh Hyde Bowling website, I hope to create a library about the PBA including PBA memorabilia and various statistics. Also, I plan to add some other columns named after bowling lingo. 9. What opportunities have opened up for you because of this newsletter? I have written for Stars & Strikes, Bowlers Journal International, and American Bowler. My first assignment for writing was for American Bowler, a bowling newspaper in which Harry Wolfe was the editor. Unfortunately, he passed on in 2013. He helped me publish my first book. Doing the column Bowlology has given me the chance to get my bronze USBC coaching certification. Doing the newsletter has given me the opportunity to win IBMA writing competition awards, go to many PBA tournaments, receive bowling balls from Brunswick, and finally (but certainly not least) become a part of the PBA Hall of Fame Committee. 10. What are the biggest bowling events that you have covered? The 2015 Tournament of Champions (I wrote the Media Kit), all of the PBA World Series of Bowling Tournaments, the 2016 Fall Swing, all of the 2016 Majors (I wrote the PBA Majors Media Guide), 2012-2013 PBA Tournaments (I wrote the PBA Media Guide), and the Elkhart Regional Tournaments. Memorable bowlers and bowling industry personnel interviews (not ranked in order): 1. Mike Wolfe 2. Chris Loschetter 3. Tom Clark 4. E.J. Tackett 5. Parker Bohn III 6. Mike Aulby 7. Kelly Kulick 8. Azcona-First Puerto Rican to win PBA Tour Title Page 6 Christian Azcona became the first Puerto Rican on the PBA Tour to win a PBA Tour Title at the PBA Xtra Frame Wilmington Open. He did it by striking out in the tenth to defeat Anthony Simonson 217 to 214. Both players were struggling but Christian came through in the tenth to claim the title. Tom Daugherty and Tommy Jones were the other two bowlers that made the stepladder finals. At this year s Wilmington Open, there was a $1500 pool for players that shot a perfect game. At first, it looked like Marshall Kent was going to get the whole $1500 pot when he rolled a perfect game. However, Azcona matched Kent by also bowling a 300 game in the tournament. Tommy Jones ran away with the tournament in the preliminary rounds besting the field with a 200 pin lead over second place. However, he would run into some trouble and players would took advantage of his misfortune. Bill O Neill would make the round of 8 but would fail to qualify in making the stepladder finals. Other names that made the top 8 were Sean Rash and Tim Foy, Jr. In the opening game of the stepladder finals, Tom Daugherty would defeat Tommy Jones 214 to 185. A.J. Johnson would qualify second shooting 224 to Daugherty s 201. Chris Loschetter would barely qualify. However, he would make a run by advancing to the round of 16. Scores were high as it took almost a 210 average to make the first cut. On the final day of the tournament, it was mainly Sprints as the Cashers Round was four games then they would cut to the top 16. Those players would bowl three more games to the top 8. In the last Sprint, the players would only have a two game qualifying to determine the top four. This Xtra Frame Tour event would attract 80 plus players for the Top Prize of $10,000. It looked like Tommy Jones was going to run away with the tournament lead. However, in the latter portion of the tournament he would stick on the approach and could never recover. Simonsen and Daugherty would throw huge games to give Tommy a run for his money. Christian Azcona would qualify as the top seed in the stepladder finals as he would bowl a 300 and never look back. Tommy did not have a good ball reaction in the round of 8. However, there were bowlers that fired big games toward the end of the tournament. It was unfortunate for Jones as he was looking for his 19th tour title. The next Xtra Frame event will be from June 8th to June 10th. PBA Xtra Frame 2018 Wilmington Open Champion Christian Azcona

Belmonte and Tackett lead PBA Tour Finals Page 7 Jason Belmonte and EJ Tackett took the lead in the last game which gives them the choice of pattern on the stepladder finals. Each group had two fresh oil and two burned oil without any bonus pins award. The qualifying was just total pinfall. For the stepladders, they both chose the Dick Weber. Group 1 had a big gap between second and third place. Anthony Simonsen had a six pin lead going into the position round. Jason Belmonte had a 279 in the final game and took the lead with a final +174 against Simonsen s +153. In Group 2, defending champion EJ Tackett bowled a big game to get the lead in game four. This group had tight scores after game three where any bowler could claim the top spot. The spread was only 26 between first and fourth. Jones struggled on the Don Carter and Dick Weber patterns after leading the Johnny Petraglia and Mark Roth rounds. Tackett jump from last place all the way to first with a 258 game giving him a total of +112 The step-ladder and final match will be reported in the next issue of the Josh Hyde Bowling Newsletter. Group 1 Group 2

Below are the last #12 through #16 PBA 60th Anniversary Most Memorable Moments. #12-1976 Jack Biondolillo first bowler to bowl perfect game on national television and in PBA history at the Tournament of Champions. #13 - Weber Drops the U.S. Open Trophy #14 - ABC Sports Begins Pro Bowlers Tour Coverage #15 - Peters, Glaser, Slade Purchase PBA #16 - Mark Roth wins 8 titles in one season. 1978 Mark Roth would become the Player of the Year. He would place in the top 5 of every Major, but did not win. He did win 8 other titles that season. He set a record for most titles in a single season.

There have been numerous opportunities that I have been a part of in doing the Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter. In 2001, I became an honorary PBA member. I really wanted to have a career in the bowling industry. These past ten years have gone fast. During the second year of my publication, the PBA started the WSOB. The PBA WSOB has catapulted my bowling career. I have covered the WSOB ever since the start of the tournament. My goal has always been to have a career in the bowling industry. Ever since 2001, when becoming a fan of the PBA, I was hooked on the PBA and bowling. When my Mom and Dad would take me to tournaments, it would help me realize that I did not have a disability. In the past ten years, I really have dedicated myself by using the most of my PBA membership the best way I know how. The friendships that I gained in the bowling industry are a gift. Mike Aulby has said in previous articles that I was as much a player as the pro-bowlers are. Having some of the greatest bowlers be subscribers to Josh Tenth Frame Commentary A STRIKING THOUGHT Page 9 Hyde s Bowling Newsletter is an honor and a thrill. I was doing an interview with Mike Aulby about his former sponsor Don Mitchell who was going into the PBA Hall of Fame. I interviewed Mike because I wanted to know what Don did for the PBA. Kirk VonKurger s son had asked Mike if he could commentate on Xtra Frame. Mike had said that he was doing an interview about Don Mitchell. Xtra Frame understood that Mike was going to give priority to my interview. By doing that, Mike showed that I definitely had a career in the bowling industry. Parker Bohn III has really been a great friend to me for my bowling career. He has been a subscriber to Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter. On a personal note, I say thank you. I also want to thank Brunswick Bowling for allowing me to cover the bowling balls and giving me the best bowling equipment so that I can potentially throw a 300-game. A thank you to Vise for giving me a regional staff contract which has made me feel like a complete pro-bowler. My major goal is yet to be realized to write for the PBA. PBA SPARE SHOT HIGHLIGHT Last month, I wrote an email (see below) to Tom Clark asking him if the PBA could write about doing my newsletter. I did not hear anything for a couple of days or receive an email from him, and I was sitting on pins and needles. On Friday the 18th, he would honor my request by mentioning my newsletter in the weekly PBA Spare Shots. I saw the blurb at the bottom of the Quick Notes section (see at bottom of page): a mention of my newsletter, my 28 years as a PBA Super Fan and one of my highest bowling accomplishments-a 300 game. The PBA Spare Shot column said that I have a unique perspective on the sport of bowling. There have been a handful of articles about yours truly, Josh Hyde. They also added a link to the website Josh Hyde Bowling.com. I am grateful to be on the PBA Website as I have been reporting on the PBA for ten years. I still plan on covering bowling s elite tournaments. Thank you, Tom Clark, for mentioning me and writing about Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter. This has been a great decade to have a bowling career.
