This Season s Notables Drive for Five The Gamecocks enter the 2017-18 season as the four-time reigning SEC regular-season champions, becoming just the second program to win four straight titles, joining Tennessee, which claimed its fourth straight in 2001 en route to the league-record seven consecutive titles (1998-2004). Staying Power South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley is in her 10th season at the helm after guiding the Gamecocks into the postseason seven times in her first nine seasons in Columbia, including the 2017 National Championship and five other Sweet 16 berths. With a.711 winning percentage over her 17 seasons as a head coach, Staley is 24th among active NCAA Div. I head coaches with at least 10 years of experience and is the best among SEC head coaches. Staley is the third-longest tenured coach currently in the SEC, and her 10.8 league wins per season is best among the group. During the Gamecocks current four-year run as SEC champion, the program averaged 14.8 conference wins per season. Everybody s All-American South Carolina s roster features a perennial favorite for All-America honors in senior forward A ja Wilson. The two-time SEC Player of the Year is vying to become the program s first four-time All-American after opening her career as a third-team selection and picking up consensus first-team honors the last two seasons. Back in (Garnet and) Black The Gamecocks return six letterwinners from last season, including two regular starters and a third who started half of last season s games. Senior forward A ja Wilson has been a fixture in the starting lineup for the last two seasons, while sophomore guard Tyasha Harris worked her way into the Gamecocks starting rotation at the start of SEC play last season and kept her spot throughout the national championship run. Senior guard Bianca Cuevas-Moore opened and closed the 2016-17 season in the starting lineup. The trio combined to average 30.9 points last season, while the three other returning letterwinners added 8.6 points per game. Sophomore forward Mikiah Herbert Harrigan led the group with 4.9 points per game, including 6.2 points per postseason game as her minutes expanded due to injury-induced lineup changes. Transfer Tickets For the second-straight season, South Carolina welcomes a transfer into the mix for this season as Alexis Jennings will take the court for the first time in a Gamecock uniform. The junior forward sat out last season after transferring from SEC rival Kentucky, where she contributed 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game over her two seasons in Lexington. Jennings will look to return to the form that earned her SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2015 after capturing WBCA High School All-America recognition the year before. New Faces Five new Gamecocks join the fold this season with three freshmen and a graduate transfer ready to take the court right away. Redshirt-sophomore guard Te a Cooper will sit out the 2017-18 season after transferring from Tennessee in the offseason. All three freshmen were ranked in the top 55 of the 2017 recruiting class, including a pair of top-50 entries. Guard/forward LeLe Grissett earned the top spot among the group, ranked No. 23 in the class and the fourth-best wing player. Bianca Jackson and LaDazhia Williams both earned state player of the year honors in their final high school campaigns. Penn State transfer Lindsey Spann chose to spend her final season of eligibility with at South Carolina and brings a wealth of outside shooting to the Gamecocks lineup. Averaging 12.3 points over her three years as a Lady Lion, she ranks eighth in Penn State history in career made 3s (143) and was an honorable mention Big Ten selection as a sophomore. AW = All-World A finalist for national player of the year honors the last two seasons, forward A ja Wilson is missing little from her trophy cabinet in her college career with just one more year to complete it. She joined Olympic gold medalist Shannon Johnson as the only Gamecocks to earn First-Team All-SEC honors three times and is looking to become the first to make it a four-year sweep. Through three seasons, she averages 15.6 points with an eye on becoming just the third Gamecock to amass 2,000 career points and the first since Johnson closed her career at 2,230 in 1995-96. As South Carolina stormed to titles in both the SEC and NCAA Tournaments last season, Wilson scored 19.3 points per postseason game, including four 20-point outings among the six contests. USA Basketball At least one Gamecock has donned the red, white and blue for USA Basketball in each of the last four summers, and the group has helped six U.S. teams to gold medals in that time. The streak will continue at least the next four years as head coach Dawn Staley was named the Senior National Team head coach for 2017-20 as the U.S. eyes another Olympic gold medal. Former Gamecock Tiffany Mitchell got the current four-year string started with her FIBA 3x3 World Championship gold in 2014, which A ja Wilson and Staley matched with a gold in the 2014 FIBA U18 Americas Championship. Staley went on to assist on USA Basketball s FIBA World Championship gold-medal team that same year. The next summer, Wilson and Staley claimed the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship gold. In 2016, Alexis Jennings captured bronze in the FIBA 3x3 World Championship, and Tyasha Harris made the first of her two USA Basketball teams, helping the U18 team gold in the FIBA U18 Americas Championship and the U19 team to silver in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup. Wilson earned a spot on the USA Basketball U23 team in 2017 before an injury kept her out of international competition.
