Jigsaw Reading The Greeks held the first Olympic in the year 776 BC. The Romans, who conquered Greece, banned the Olympics in 393 AC. The Olympics were revived by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and sportsman: the first modern Olympic were held in 1896 AC. They are staged every four year. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. Modern Olympics are held all over the world. The games were a part of a religious festival and were held in honour of Zeus. The Greeks believed that their gods loved to see strong, fit, graceful human bodies, so one way to get on the good side of the gods was to exercise and make athletic competitions. Only men and boys were allowed to attend the Olympic. Unmarried women had their own festival at Olympia: this was the Heraia, held in honour of Hera, wife of Zeus. At the beginning the only event was a short sprint from one end of the stadium to the other. Gradually other events were added, for example wrestling, boxing, long jump, throwing the javelin and discus, chariot racing.
