On Wednesday, May 5 th 2010, the DeFuniak Springs Police hosted a Northwest Florida Pharmaceutical Diversion Training for Law Enforcement. The training was organized by Lieutenant David Krika, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division and was sponsored by Purdue Pharma LP. Over 40 individuals from several different Law Enforcement Agencies from throughout the Florida Panhandle participated in this training opportunity with the Guest Speaker of the Event being Florida s Lieutenant Governor the honorable Jeff Kottkamp. The Lieutenant Governor praised local law enforcement in attendance for their efforts in combating prescription drug crimes and the ever present methamphetamine epidemic. Department of Transportation supplied the City with grant funding to spruce up the medians at Highway 331 North and US 90. Check out the extended dock built by the Maintenance Department! Take A Kid Fishing Day was Saturday May 22nd so this gave the kids access to fish off the dock. Great work, guys!! The UPBEAT Page 3

The new observatory deck near the amphitheater is started. Soon there will be decorative railings and lots of seating! The sod is in at the Chautauqua Building! The parks department worked quickly to ensure it was ready for our busy wedding season. Good work guys! Newly installed sprinklers are already hard at work! Public Works employees working together to complete a project on Hubbard Street, replacing three large drainage pipes. The UPBEAT Page 4

Quality Corner by Jayne Swift WOW, what a ride!! We have been a busy group of people, haven t we? First, the Employee Leadership Council hit a homerun with doing a community involvement project to raise funds for our fireworks show. That was crazy fun! The raffle for the $500 BassPro card, which was donated by CH2M HILL raised $3500. And I didn t win!!! Special thanks to Kim Hagan and Loretta Laird for their efforts in printing signs and making tickets. You guys are awesome. And a special thanks to Mr. Greg Scoville for his patience and understanding during the time of money collecting and ticket printing. Thanks Greg!! Oh I almost forgot, the half day off with pay for selling the most tickets goes to Loretta Laird 1500 tickets! Crazy Then there was the carwash, again benefitting the fireworks fund. The day started out rainy, but it didn t dampen our spirits any. We persevered, and then the sun came out just enough to bring in the cars, and in one case the boat! Bill Holloway fired up the grill with dogs and sausages, while the girls served up beans and drinks. Jayne and Kim and Ed worked the traffic, with Jayne and Ed coordinating a tag team strategy at getting the cars attention! Let s not forget the car washers Harold looked like he played under the sprinkler, he was soaking wet, and Celia is by far my favorite car washer. (I think she does it on the side!) Thanks to EVERYONE who helped pull this off, and to the businesses that donated food to sell; Smokey J s, Walgreen s, Wal-Mart, Thriftway, and Winn Dixie. Oh and did I mention we raised over $600 on this day! Last but not least, the ELC got to choose a winner for the new logo for our City s Mission Statement that was developed by the first ELC group. The winner of the logo contest was Michelle Schack. We had 7 entries, all unique, but Michelle s was a unanimous choice. Michelle won a $50 gift card donated by CH2M HILL. Congrats Michelle, and great logo!! I am so proud to be a part of the Employee Leadership Council. I want to personally thank Nathan Fountain for bringing the idea of raising funds for the fireworks. I hope everyone enjoys the fireworks show. Your fellow employees made it possible! I could not have created this without inspiration from Mr. Huffman s drawing below. Thank you Mr. Huffman and than you Jayne and the ELC!!! Michelle Schack The UPBEAT Page 5
