The Terrapins, ranked No. 18 and 19 in this week s national polls released by the AP and USA Today/ESPN, earned their third straight home victory of at least a 26-point margin, dismantling the Spartans 123-79 with 60 percent shooting, 28 assists and forcing 24 turnovers. Maryland has won December home games by 48, 26 and 44-point margins. Baxter hit his first seven shots and finished with a career-high 32 points against NSU, on 12 of 14 shooting from the floor including just the third 3-pointer of his career and the first since his freshman season. He also added seven rebounds. Dixon, on 12 of 17 shooting, poured in 26 points to mark his third straight game with 23 or better in the scoring column. He contributed a seasonhigh five steals. Overall, Maryland won for the sixth straight time while extending its overall home win streak to 10 games, and its non-conference home win streak to 74. A Terrapin Win On Wednesday Sends the Terps onto a seven-game win streak, matching a sevengame streak of consecutive ACC opponents in 1998-99, two years ago. Extends the nation s longest non-conference home winning streak to 75 games. Extends Maryland s home court win streak to 11 games overall. The Terps last home loss was an 80-70 defeat by No. 7 Duke last season on Jan. 9. Is the 82nd victory for Maryland s senior class of Mike Mardesich, Terence Morris and LaRon Cephas. MARYLAND vs. Chicago State / UMES... 2-2-2 HEAD COACH GARY WILLIAMS A three-time National Coach of the Year finalist and the 10th-winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history, Gary Williams (Maryland 68) is in his 12th season as head coach of his alma mater. He has transformed the Maryland program into one of the nation s most formidable, and has built a following that has consistently resulted in sellout crowds at Cole Field House. A former Terrapins point guard, Williams was a starter under coach Bud Millikan during the 1965, 1966 and 1967 seasons. He was the team captain as a senior. As the Maryland coach, Williams has produced more than 20 wins in five of his last six seasons. Williams is the 29th-winningest active coach in America with 431 wins. Williams, 224-131 at Maryland, boasts a 431-259 overall record which includes four years at American (1979-82), four at Boston College (1983-86) and three at Ohio State (1987-89). In his 23rd season as a Division I head coach, Williams has coached in 10 NCAA Tournaments and guided six different teams to the NCAA Sweet 16. He has guided teams to the NCAA Tournament at each of his four coaching stops, and is the only coach in America to direct programs in each of the ACC, Big Ten and Big East conferences. Williams is one of six 400-win coaches who now engineer the programs at their respective alma maters (Jerry Tarkanian, Fresno State; Lou Henson, New Mexico State; Gale Catlett, West Virginia; Larry Hunter, Ohio). He notched his 400th win with a season-opening win over San Francisco on Nov. 17, 1999. He recorded his 200th victory at Maryland during a 72-66 win over No. 23 Kentucky one month later. Series History Maryland and Chicago State have met just once, with the Terps boasting a 50-point win, 94-44, at Cole Field House on Dec. 2, 1996. Against Maryland-Eastern Shore, the Terrapins are 13-0 all-time, including a 104-66 win on Dec. 28, 1995 in their most recent meeting. Two of Maryland s top 11 margins of victory have come at the expense of the cross-state rival Hawks 117-51 (+66, 3rd) on Feb. 27, 1987 and 115-60 (+55, 11th) on Nov. 26, 1991. Nine straight meetings in the series have been decided by 30 points or more, 10 straight have included victory margins of 20 points or more. Injury Report Sophomore forward Tahj Holden fractured the fifth metatarsal bone on his left foot during practice on Dec. 7 and has missed the last three games. Holden underwent a successful surgery on Saturday, Dec. 9 to place a screw in the foot. He is expected to miss approximately four to six weeks of action, with a hopeful return in mid- to late-january. Next Games After the Chicago State game on Wednesday, the terps host UMES on Saturday, Dec. 30 (1:30 p.m./hts) in their final tune-up for the Atlantic Coast Conference season. The Terps open play in the Atlantic Coast Conference at Clemson on Jan. 2 (8 p.m.). Co-Captains Maryland has named co-captains for the current season seniors Mike Mardesich and Terence Morris. Combined, they have 221 games experience during their four-year careers (Mardesich 111, Morris 110). Comcast Center Maryland basketball teams will play in the Comcast Center beginning in the 2002-2003 season, thanks to a $20 million naming rights gift to the university announced on Jan. 5, 1999. Last summer, Comcast increased its gift by $5 million in order to include naming rights on the floor. The gift is part of a business partnership that also includes the provision of cable television services to university residence halls. The Comcast gift is the largest single donation ever to the flagship campus, and it matches the largest known corporate naming gift in the United States for a college athletic facility. The $25 million represents a significant portion of the university's share of the cost of construction on the planned $124 million arena, which is being constructed on the north side of the campus under the auspices of the Maryland Stadium Authority. TERPNOTES ACC Around The Corner Maryland hosts a pair of non-conference games this week as its final tuneup to the Terrapins 48th season of basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps are at Clemson on Tuesday, Jan. 2, before hosting back-to-back home dates with Georgia Tech (Jan. 6) and North Carolina (Jan. 10). Lights, Camera, Action! Wednesday s game against Chicago State is the Terps final game this season that is not on television. Beginning Saturday with UMES, 18 consecutive regular season contests will appear on regional or national TV. End Of A Homestand After playing at six straight neutral-site venues to begin the season, Maryland ends its December slate with five of six dates at Cole Field House. Through the first three games of its five-game December slate at Cole, the Terps have beaten Stony Brook by 48 points (107-59), UMBC by 26 (93-67) and Norfolk State by 44 (123-79). Maryland s combined margin in three home games so far is 39.3 points. Home, Sweet Home In three home games, Maryland averages 107.7 points and 80.3 percent at the line. Measuring Sticks When Maryland lost three straight games in November, criticism was pointed toward its lessthan-dominating inside presence. Now 10 games into the season, here are a few tendencies which tell the story. Maryland s Record When: Outrebounding the opponent... 7-0 Outrebounded by the opponent... 0-3 Shooting more free throws... 7-0 Shooting fewer free throws... 0-3 Rebounding On The Boards After an early season rebounding drought, Maryland has turned the rebounding numbers in the opposite direction, handling its foes on the glass in six straight games. In each of its last two games, Maryland has outrebounded its opponent by a season-high +15 margin. Maryland outrebounded UMBC 44-29, and Norfolk State 43-28. Getting Offensive Maryland dominated NSU on the boards on both ends of the floor last Saturday. Case in point: the Terps had more offensive boards (19), than Norfolk had defensive (18). Swat That! Maryland led the ACC and set a school record with 6.7 blocked shots per game in 1999-00. This season, the Terps are at it again with an average of 7.8 through 10 games. Including 11 blocks against UMBC, the Terps have double-figure blocked shots three times this season. Maryland has at least six blocked shots in eight of 10 games. Four different players (Lonny Baxter, Tahj Holden, Mike Mardesich, Terence Morris) have had at least three blocks in a game this season. MARYLAND BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK... 2-2-2 QUOTING GARY WILLIAMS Following are quotes from Gary Williams following the Norfolk State and UMBC games. Williams appears weekly on a Monday chat session at noon on ESPN.com. The chat resumes after the holidays on Jan. 8. On the Norfolk State game: I thought we played well today. We played good basketball. We were unselfish. When you shoot Mondays at Noon 60 percent in a game, it has a lot to do with guys looking for each other and being willing to give the ball up. We had five guys in double figures. It is a good time to be playing well. On Lonny Baxter against Norfolk State: We were able to get the ball in to Lonny, and he finished. He was great and our players did a great job of helping him get the basketball. Lonny gives you whatever he has, every game. He doesn t read the scoreboard like some guys do. He just comes and plays hard. On the UMBC game: I thought it was a good, solid effort for this time of year, especially with exams starting tomorrow. It is sometimes hard to concentrate in these situations. It is an important time of year for us and we need to stay focused. On Maryland s rebounding: I was very pleased with our rebounding [against UMBC]. We had 44 to 29 against a good rebounding team. Size isn t everything in rebounding. You have to get after it, and we got after it tonight. We realized the margin that opponents had created in the first eight games, so that was something we definitely emphasized in this game. On the second half against UMBC: I liked the way we moved the ball in the second half. We were really unselfish with the ball and it seemed to get to the right guy. On Juan Dixon: Juan Dixon was stroking it [against UMBC]. You could really tell that he was on his game. He was getting some good looks. Juan has a really good inside/outside game. He gets points in the lane no matter who we play against. On Maryland s prospects in the ACC: Right now, there are five ACC teams in the top 20 of the country. It is the toughest conference in the country, including the No. 1 team in the country. So, for anyone to win the ACC this year, it s going to take an outstanding effort. We feel we can be competitive to win the league this year, and we re building toward that goal. On coaching in the ACC: Each night you play in the ACC, you know as a coach, that you have to be at the top of your game because you re going against wellrespected coaches and programs. I ve always felt that I want to coach in the big games against ranked teams, and the ACC provides you with that opportunity. On preseason expectations: Now that the season has started, there are quite a few surprises in college basketball. We are one of the teams that, hopefully, as the conference season comes up in January, will be good enough to compete nationally. This year will be difficult in our league to make the NCAA Tournament because of the level of competition in our league. Once that is accomplished though, you know that you should be good enough to play with anybody in the country. Morris has had multiple blocks in eight of 10 games, and at least one block in every game. Lonny Baxter has recorded at least one block in nine of 10 games. Maryland blocked a Maui Invitational record 13 blocked shots in its loss to Dayton. The Terps were led by Baxter s tournament record of six by an individual. Tale Of Two Halves Maryland has never trailed at halftime in any game this season. However, in its three losses and even in its win at Penn, opponents have outscored the Terps during the second half. For the season, Maryland outscores its opponents 459-311 during the first half for an average difference of 14.8 points per game. In the second half though, Maryland has outscored its opponents, 412-391, for an average of just 2.1 points. Scoreboard Watching Maryland scored a season-high 123 points against Norfolk State, marking the most since a 132-point bonanze against North Texas on the same date two years ago (Dec. 23, 1999). The Terps 58 first-half points and 65 second-half points both were season highs, also, and the 65 points in the second stanza were the most in a half since posting 67 in the first half of the North Texas game. All-America Marylanders Among the Terrapins five returning starters is a trio of All-America candidates who each has earned first team All-ACC honors within the past two years. Each of the three also has been tabbed as a preseason candidate for the Naismith and Wooden national player of the year awards. The key stat for Maryland fans: all three are Maryland natives Lonny Baxter (Silver Spring, Md.), Juan Dixon (Baltimore, Md.) and Terence Morris (Frederick, Md.). Three To 1,000 Lonny Baxter is just 61 points shy of helping the Terrapins earn distinction by having three different players on the same team with over 1,000 career points. Terence Morris achieved the milestone last season, becoming the 35th Maryland player overall and just the 15th junior to accomplish the feat. This season, Juan Dixon has already gone over 1,000 while still a junior. Baxter stands to become the 17th Maryland junior ever to reach the 1,000-point plateau. 30-30? Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon finished with 32 and 26 points, respectively, in Saturday s win over Norfolk State. The duo fell just four Dixon points shy of becoming the first Maryland tandem ever to score 30 points in the same game. Inside Muscle Lonny Baxter leads Maryland in points (17.5), and rebounds (6.5), and is second with 21 blocked shots. Baxter s career-high 22 points came on 12 of 14 shooting against Norfolk State last Saturday. Baxter hit his first seven shots, and scored 17 points in the first six minutes of the second half. Baxter s top of the key 3-pointer against NSU was the third of his career and his first since his freshman season. After leading the ACC with 12 doubledoubles in 1999-00, he recorded his first doubledouble of 2000-01 with 17 points and 12 boards against UMBC. He was one of three 19-point scorers against Stony Brook, shooting 8 of 10 from the field and adding seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Baxter scored a season-high 20 points in the loss to Dayton. He has scored in double figures in 16 of the last 17 games, dating to last season. Baxter was ranked as high as the No. 2 (Lindy s & The Sporting News) center in the country in preseason publications. Baxter led the ACC with 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in a sophomore campaign which also saw him produce 15.6 points. Touted among the top centers in the nation, his inside muscle has continued to pay dividends. Slasher And Shooter Junior shooting guard Juan Dixon has scored at 23 or more points in each of his last three games, including 12 of 17 shooting against Norfolk State to register a seasonhigh 26. A slasher and creative scorer, Dixon is currently second on the team in scoring with 16.6 points. He leads the team with 22 steals, including a seasonhigh of five against Norfolk State. In the 78th game of his career, against UMBC, Dixon became the 36th player in Maryland history to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier. Dixon s 3-pointer just three minutes into the game made him only the 16th Terrapin player to reach the milestone as just a junior. The Baltimore native has shot 27 of 43 from the floor in his last three games, with seven treys and 11 of 11 shooting from the charity stripe. Maryland s leading free throw shooter, he carries a string of 16 consecutive free throws into Wednesday s game with Chicago State. Dixon had one of his finest games of the season with 19 points against Michigan on 7 of 10 shooting. His two 3-pointers were his first of the season. He was an all-tournament selection at the BB&T Classic, averaging 16 points in two games. Dixon was ranked the top shooting guard in the country by Lindy s, and the No. 2 shooting guard by Dick Vitale s Preview and The Sporting News. Dixon led the Terps with 18.0 points and was second in the ACC in scoring last season. He led the ACC with 2.7 steals per contest, and was third in the circuit while shooting better than 44 percent from 3-point range through 16 league games. Mr. Opportunity Maryland junior Byron Mouton has made the most of his first six starting assignments for the Terrapins, sparking the Terps to six straight wins. In a three-game span from Dec. 3-9, Mouton scored 17, 19 and 20 points, while shooting

He has scored in double figures in six of 10 games this season. He has led the Terps in scoring three times, including a 17-point effort against GW in the championship game of the BB&T Classic. He was named to the all-tournament team at the BB&T Classic, alongside junior teammate Juan Dixon. For the season, Mouton leads the Terrapins with an impressive 59.7 percent shooting clip. Not bad for a guy who s offensive repertoire consists mostly of slashing, off-balance and turnaround jumpers in traffic. Mr. All-Around Terence Morris currently is second on the team in rebounds (5.4), fourth in scoring (11.5) and the leader in blocks (2.4). Against Norfolk State, Morris registered four blocked shots to become just the third Maryland player and the 16th in ACC history to record more than 200 career blocks. Morris opening game vs. Louisville was dominating: 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. Morris had three blocks in each of the Terps first two games vs. Louisville and Illinois, and contributed four against Dayton. He has had multiple blocks in eight out of 10 games this season including a season-best four vs. NSU. He has had multiple blocked shots in 49 of 78 games in the last three seasons, and three or more blocks in 33 of those games. He is the 13th player in Maryland history to score at least 1,400 points in his career. Morris became the 15th player in Maryland history to surpass 1,000 career points in just his junior season, eclipsing the plateau on Jan. 9, 2000 against Duke. Morris completed his junior season with career averages: 15.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.6 steals. His versatility has helped the Terps lead the ACC in blocks and steals in back-to-back seasons, and he has earned honorable mention All-America honors in three consecutive seasons. Morris, selected to play on the USA Select team of college all-stars that faced the U.S. Olympic Team on Sept. 2 in Hawaii, was rated in the preseason as the nation s top swing forward by Dick Vitale s Preview and The Sporting News. Morris: Shoot, Pass, Defend In his final college season, Terence Morris is prominent among Maryland s all-time leaders in blocks (3rd), steals (8th), 3FGs (10th), rebounds (13th) and points (13th). His career scoring high was a 26-point game as a sophomore at No. 11 Kentucky. He matched it last season with a 26-point effort vs. Clemson. In three games against Kentucky the past two seasons, Morris has scored 26, 25 and 22 points (24.3). Morris passing abilities have proven as accurate as any 6-9 forward in the country four or more assists eight times, and three or more assists in 16 games during his junior campaign. MICHAEL GRINNON, a senior at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, N.Y., will attend Maryland beginning in fall 2001. As will junior college transfer RYAN RANDLE of Allegany College in Cumberland, Md. Randle, who will attend Maryland as a junior next season, hails from Texas where he attended Duncanville High School. Grinnon, a 6-6, 195-pound shooting guard who is considered to be fundamentally sound, averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals last season at St. Dominic, a traditional Long Island powerhouse. He s a great outside shooter, said Williams. He really knows how to play the game. He has had a great summer and fall going into his senior year of high school. Grinnon played for the Lightning at the annual Charlie Weber Tournament, held Sept. 15-17 at Maryland s Cole Field House, and also competed at fall tournaments at Rutgers and Connecticut. Described by one recruiting publication as a very cerebral type of player, Grinnon is an outstanding student and a member of the National Honor Society. Ryan will be a good player for us, said Williams. We have followed him at Allegany and since we ll lose Terence [Morris], Mike [Mardesich] and LaRon [Cephas] after this season, we needed a good big man who is also athletic. Randle, 6-9 and 250 pounds, is in his sophomore season at Allegany, the same school from which the Terrapins successfully recruited All-American Steve Francis. He will attend Maryland for his final two seasons. At Allegany, he helped lead his team to a 28-2 record as a freshman. He averaged 10.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and led the team with 31 blocked shots. Coming off the bench, he also added 43 assists and 27 steals to display the ball-handling skills that set him apart from an ordinary big man. Said Randle s coach at Allegany, Bob Kirk, Even though he didn t start for us last year, he was the best player on the team. We ve never had anyone who is as capable a player except for Steve Francis.

The 7-foot reserve center needs 21 more games this year to surpass the existing record of 131 games, by Len Bias (1983-86). He needs to play 16 more games in succession in order to eclipse the existing mark of 126 consecutive games played by Keith Booth (1994-97). Right behind Mardesich is fellow co-captain Terence Morris who has played in 110 games overall. He missed last season s game at Clemson to end his consecutive games streak at 83. Engineering The Point Sophomore Steve Blake has capably handled point guard duties for the Terps since his first day on campus as a true freshman. He is fast becoming one of the best veteran point guards in the country. Blake posted a near triple-double against Norfolk State, pulling down a career-high eight rebounds with nine assists and 10 points. He had seven points, 10 assists and four steals in the win over UMBC. In just 23 minutes against Stony Brook, Blake dished a career-high 13 assists, recording the most by a Terrapin since Steve Francis recorded 13 against Virginia in 1999. Three nights later at Penn, he drilled a timely 3-pointer and a pair of driving jumpers to help the Terps stave off a furious Quaker rally in the final minutes. MARYLAND BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK... 5-5-5 Through 10 games, Blake s 7.3 assists exceed last season s 6.3 average. He is currently second in the ACC. He boasts at least five assists in nine of 10 games, and at least nine assists in his last three outings. Last season, Blake was regarded as one of the country s top freshman, and in preseason 2000 he has been tabbed as one of the top 11 point guards overall. He spent the past summer touring with the U.S. Under-20 team and earning a silver medal at the World Championships qualifying tournament in Brazil. Nicholas Fills Dual Role Shooting guard. Point guard. Regardless of which role he has been asked to play, Long Island native Drew Nicholas has been outstanding early in his sophomore season. Nicholas has assumed backup point guard chores as a sophomore. At the same time, he has become one of the Terps most deadly long-range shooters. Nicholas is second in the ACC in 3-point percentage (16 of 27, 59.3%). He also is among the top 10 nationally. Nicholas has also improved his marksmanship from the field, scorching the nets for 69 percent at Maui and 52.2 percent overall. In the loss to Dayton, Nicholas hit four of five 3-point shots to finish with 12 points, five assists and a pair of steals. He has hit at least one 3-point basket in all 10 games this season, and in 15 straight games overall dating to last season s ACC Tournament. 3-Point Goals Five different Terrapins scored 30 or more 3- point baskets in 1999-00, and added this season is former Tulane scoring sensation Byron Mouton (who made 46 treys at Tulane in 1998-99). Maryland boasts a 174-game streak with at least one 3-pointer, dating to March 18, 1995. Noting The Rook Just one player is new to the Terps roster in 2000-01. True freshman Chris Wilcox has seen game action in nine of 10 games to date at both the power forward and center positions. After a slow beginning while the team got itself together, collectively, Wilcox has shown continued promise by averaging 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds over the last four games. He also has seen an average of 13.8 minutes over those four games. Wilcox was the Terps leading rebounder with eight against Stony Brook. He has scored at least seven points on four occasions. The 6-10 native of Raleigh, N.C., has recorded at least one blocked shot in four of nine games played. Strength Of Schedule Based on preseason AP rankings, Maryland experiences just one stretch this season in which it encounters more than two games at a time without facing a ranked opponent. Maryland s eight-game string including the BB&T Classic is the Terps only span of more than two games without a ranked opponent. Depth Factor Maryland is one of America s deepest and most athletic teams in 2000-01. The Terrapins return all five starters from their 25-10 team a year ago, plus their top three reserves. Added to the mix are Byron Mouton, runner-up as the 1998 Conference USA Rookie of the Year, who plays both the 2 and 3 positions; and 6-10 freshman Chris Wilcox who logs minutes at the power forward and center positions. The Terps are at least two, and as many as four players deep at every position on the floor. Road Warriors Maryland played its first six games all away from Cole Field House. It was Maryland s longest streak away from home to begin a season since the Terps began playing in Cole Field House in 1955-56. It was the longest streak away from home to begin a season since 1941, overall. Terps In The Polls Maryland carries a string of 24 consecutive weeks in the AP Poll. The current streak began on Nov. 22, 1999 last season with the Terps peaking in the No. 12 position last season on Jan. 3, 2000, and at No. 5 in the AP s 2000 preseason poll. Maryland finished last season ranked No. 17. Maryland was No. 5 in the AP preseason poll, reflecting the highest preseason ranking by a Gary Williams-coached team, and the sixth time in Terrapin history that Maryland has begun in the Top 5. A total of 26 teams nationally have been ranked No. 2 at least once, but never have been ranked No. 1. Maryland leads the way among those teams with 18 No. 2 rankings, while Louisville is second with 15. Maryland has appeared in 44 of the last 46 polls, 48 of 51, 54 of 60 and 67 of the last 75 polls since Dec. 9, 1996. Of those 73 polls since December 9, 1996, Maryland has been in the Top 10, 24 times. The Rebounding Game One Of Country s Elite Maryland is one of just ten schools to have participated in each of the last seven NCAA Tournaments. Only Arizona, Cincinnati, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Purdue, Temple and UCLA join the Terps as teams that have competed in each of the last seven NCAA men s basketball tournaments. Maryland is the only team in the ACC that has advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals in each of the last six seasons, the best streak in Terrapin history. Last season s ACC championship game appearance was the Terps first since 1984. Best Eras The Terps 74 wins between the 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons reflect the best three-year stretch in Terrapin basketball history in terms of total wins. Likewise, Maryland s 34 ACC wins those past three seasons reflect the best threeyear stretch of ACC victories. The Terps 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons also mark the first threeyear period with consecutive double-digit wins in ACC play. The Terps ranked 20th (13,377 avg.) among national attendance leaders in 1998, 15th (school record 14,474 avg.) in 1999, and 17th (14,148 avg.) in 2000. Last season, the Terps ranked 10th nationally and played before a school-record 503,648 fans overall. That figure was up from a previous record of 473,626 and a No. 12 ranking in 1999. Maryland played to 99.8 percent capacity for its entire season at 14,500-seat Cole Field House during the 1998-99 season.
