/ NEWS SAVABEEL SIRES HIS 73RD INDIVIDUAL STAKES WINNER Opie Bosson s judgment was again emphasised at Matamata where Savabeel s son Sword Of Osman distanced his rivals. Te Akau s stable jockey tipped him as a rare talent before the two-year-old had raced and his prediction has been on the money. Sword Of Osman was successful on debut before he was unplaced in the Karaka Million (1200m), but he was back in the winning groove on Saturday with an effortless victory in the Group 3 Reid & Harrison Limited Slipper (1200m). He s a really, really good horse, Bosson said. He s one of the best in our stable and I ve said that from day one. He s pretty smart. Sword Of Osman was quickly into stride to lead and when Bosson asked him for a serious effort 200m from home the gelding exploded clear. I thought he raced a bit keenly and wouldn t kick like he did, but he s got a ton of ability, said Stephen Autridge who trains with Jamie Richards. Opie can certainly pick the right one. He led when he won his first start and in the Karaka Million he got jammed up on the fence and didn t have a lot of room so we turned the page on the run. A start in the Group 1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie in a fortnight s time now beckons Sword Of Osman. We ll have to look at that now, Autridge said. Sword of Osman is the 73rd individual Stakes winner for champion sire Savabeel and the precocious gelding was a $165,000 Karaka yearling purchase by Te Akau principal David Ellis. BELOW / Sword of Osman

/ NEWS STUD GRADUATE POSTS TOP OAKS TRIAL The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained daughter of Savabeel followed the earlier winning lead of stablemate Montoya Star when she cruised to victory in the Group 3 Lowland Stakes (2100m) at Hastings on Thursday evening. Savvy Coup s a filly that s always showed a lot of ability and it wasn t until New Zealand Cup week at Riccarton that the penny dropped with her and everybody knows she won twice there stylishly, Michael Pitman said. She subsequently headed north to win the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) and finished third in both the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m) and the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie. She came through that last race really well and put on a bit of weight, which isn t a bad thing going toward the Oaks, Pitman said. Savvy Coup s performance at Hawke s Bay has seen her odds for the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m) odds cut from $7 to a $3.50 favourite. The three-year-old settled toward the back of the field in the Lowland and when rider Chris Johnson asked her to lengthen stride in the straight she cut loose to win with authority. We were always confident she would improve with the step up in trip, Matthew Pitman said. She took a while to relax and she did eventually for Chris. There s a lot of Oaks winners come out of this race so that s encouraging going forward. Savvy Coup is out of the unraced Pins are Eudora, who is a sister to the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Legless Veuve and the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes winner Tootsie. The latter is the dam of the Group 2 Tauranga Stakes winner Ocean Emperor, also a Waikato Stud graduate. BELOW / Savvy Coup

/ NEWS GUINEAS GOLD BECKONS The Waikato Stud influence is evident in Saturday s Group 1 Australian Guineas with an incredible one quarter of the field being sired by Waikato Stud stallions. BELOW / Embellish Savabeel has three sons entered Embellish, Addictive Nature and Black Sail, while the late O Reilly will be represented by impressive last start winner Grunt. Kiwi colt Embellish is a graduate of the Matamata breeding powerhouse and was a $775,000 Karaka buy for Te Akau boss David Ellis. Winner of the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas in the spring, the colt has improved with his last-start sixth in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes. He galloped on the steeple grass this week and our main man there, Dan Miller, was very happy with him, cotrainer Jamie Richards said. Out of the O Reilly mare Bling, Embellish is a brother to the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes winner Diademe. It is also the family of the multiple Group Onewinning sprinter Sacred Star. Addictive Nature has won two of his six starts, including the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality, for trainer Bjorn Baker. He has had two runs back from a break and was a creditable fifth against the older horses in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at his most recent outing. Another $775,000 Karaka yearling, Addictive Nature is a brother to the Group Two winner Savvy Nature. The Aaron Purcell-trained Black Sail was sixth in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes in his Guineas lead-up. He is a son of the English-bred Singspiel mare Ennerdale and a brother to the Group Three winner Éclair Big Bang. O Reilly s son Grunt, a $220,000 Karaka yearling, looms as one of the major chances with a hat-trick of wins completed with success in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes. He s also showed he likes Flemington and he will relish the 1600 metres and is even looking for further, trainer Mick Price said. Grunt is out of the Van Nistelrooy mare Ruqqaya, who is a half-sister to Waikato Stud s exciting young stallion Ocean Park. Click here to view Waikato Stud s resident stallions

/ NEWS STUD HAS STRONG DERBY HAND The potency of the Waikato Stud stallion roster is highlighted by the make-up of Saturday s Group 1 New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie. BELOW / The Mayor Savabeel, Ocean Park and Rock n Pop all claim representation with inform runners in strong contention. Endowment is a son of the champion sire Savabeel and he has made an encouraging start to his career. Trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs, he has won once from five starts and finished runner-up in the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas. At his most recent appearance, Endowment ran eighth in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas after jumping awkwardly on an unsuitable rainaffected track. He is out of the unraced Pins mare Timpin from the family of the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner Elevenses. Ocean Park gelding Mongolianconqueror has won twice in seven appearances for trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. He was another to be tripped up by a slow track when seventh in the Avondale Guineas. A $130,000 Ready to Run Sale purchase by Te Akau principal David Ellis, Mongolianconqueror is out of Queen Rania whose five foals to race are all winners. The lightly-tried Rock n Pop threeyear-old The Mayor promises to give another strong account of himself. Twice a winner from four outings, he finished sixth in the Avondale Guineas for trainers Lance O Sullivan and Andrew Scott. It was a good performance from him in the Guineas, Scott said. He pressed on well, a solid effort from a horse who is still learning and improving.

/ BLACK TYPE SPOTLIGHT BLACK TYPE SPOTLIGHT ADDICTIVE NATURE GROUP 1 AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS Addictive Nature / By Savabeel, from Generous Nature Beautifully bred Group winner Addictive Nature will take on a field of star 3-year-olds when he lines up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday. Addictive Nature is a full-brother to dual Group winner Savvy Nature and was purchased by Ultra Thoroughbreds at the 2016 Karaka yearling sale for $775,000. 8 / BEHIND THE SCENES BEHIND THE SCENES / YEARLING SALES The yearling sales are such an enormous deal for the team here at Waikato Stud and the logistics of coordinating a draft of 80 yearlings and over 50 staff is one very big job. In this video, we take you behind the scenes of our operation at the Karaka yearling sale during what is possibly the most demanding two weeks for the team every year. The most important preparation that we do in the lead up to the sale is educating the yearlings to cope with the demanding environment of a yearling sale. Client Relations Manager Gareth Downey knows how important their early education is It s a really big ask for a horse to come out of their home in Matamata, come up here to the sale complex with people everywhere, hustle and bustle and the popular horses can be paraded up to 150 200 times before they go through the ring so it really counts on education right back to when that foal was first born. Watch the video below to find out more!

/ MARK S MAIL / GARRY S CORNER MARK S MAIL Waikato Stud s Mark Chittick shares his thoughts on the excellent weekend of racing ahead (in-between a spot of clay bird shooting at Game Gully). GARRY S CORNER So, now we have it. What do we have, we have a paper from Thoroughbred Racing with their views on the way forward, plus a summation of the elusive Deloitte Report. Both of these documents we have waited with baited breath for, so are we disappointed or not? Click here to read Garry s Corner
