However, Tulsa LHP Devin Smeltzer ripped off 14 straight outs to close his 7.0 innings, followed by two scoreless frames from RHP Ariel Hernandez, including working out of a bases-loaded jam in the 9 th, to close the 5-3 win for the Drillers. 1 st -Half Battle With just 8 games remaining in the First Half, the Cardinals and NW Arkansas Naturals trail the Arkansas Travelers by just 2.0 games for 1 st place in the North Division. The Drillers are in 4 th but are in the hunt as well, only 3.0 games back. School is cool The Cards have gone a perfect 7-0 in educational day games this year, a perfect 5-0 at home and 2-0 on the road. Thomas on a tear With a two-run double and a single on Sunday, OF Lane Thomas extended his hitting streak to nine games, hitting.395 (15x38) with four homers and 14 RBIs while collecting his first two career multi-home run performances on 6/2 and 6/5. The Knoxville, TN native has now hit in 13 of his last 14 games, batting.356 (21x59) with four homers, four doubles and 18 RBIs during that stretch. Steady Eddy INF Tommy Edman singled and walked on Sunday to extend his on-base streak to 17 games, which included a 10-game hitting streak from 5/29-6/8. The San Diego, CA native has hits in 15 of those 17 games, tallying a.338 average (24x71) with three homers, 11 RBIs, four doubles and 16 runs during his excellent stretch, increasing his average from.239 to.269 since 5/21. The former Ragin Cajun and Sulphur, LA native has enjoyed particular success at home since joining Springfield on 5/18, hitting.389 (14x36) with both of his homers, six RBIs and nine runs in 11 games at Hammons Field so far. Roache roaring in June OF Victor Roache began the month of June with a season-high three hits (3x4) on 6/1 vs. SA and has not slowed down since, tallying hits in eight of his first nine games this month and hitting.394 (13x33) with one homer, two doubles, five RBIs and three runs. The Ypsilanti, MI native is still atop the league with 15 home runs this year, ranking t-8 th in all of Minor League Baseball. Evan almighty Named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for May, 3B Evan Mendoza has gone yard twice in his last four games, collecting hits in 11 of his last 13 games and batting.327 (16x49) with two home runs, a double, a triple and eight RBIs. After leading the STL system with a.339 average last year, he leads the system with a.329 clip this year between Palm Beach and Springfield, just ahead of his former NC State and current Springfield teammate, C Andrew Knizner (.321).
