A second trip through the Pac-10 begins this week for the seventh-ranked Husky volleyball team. Washington heads to Los Angeles to face 11th-ranked UCLA and 8th-ranked USC in two matches that could have a major impact on the Pac-10 race. The Huskies and Trojans are currently tied for third in the conference standings with a 6-3 record, with the Bruins just a game back at 5-4. Third-ranked California has moved to the top of the conference at 8-1, one game ahead of 7-2 Stanford. Washington (17-3, 6-3 Pac-10) took care of business at home against the L.A. schools earlier this month, and now will try to duplicate that success on the road. First up will be the Bruins (15-5, 5-4 Pac-10) on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. The next day the Huskies and Trojans (17-3, 6-3 Pac-10) will battle beginning at 3 p.m. in this week s FSN Match of the Week. FSN will show the match on a tape delay basis with Paul Sunderland and Holly McPeak calling the action. Five of the last six meetings between Washington and USC have gone five sets. UW is coming off a successful weekend at home, defeating Arizona and Arizona State, but the Dawgs are searching for a marquee road win this weekend, having lost three-straight on the road to ranked opponents. The Huskies had strong play from their middles last weekend, with Bianca Rowland going for 20 kills and hitting.340 and Lauren Barfield totaling 17 blocks over eight sets. The Husky defense held both teams under.200 on offense, and the Dawgs have gone 17-0 when they make that standard. WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! The Huskies returned home looking to bounce back from a tough road trip in the Bay Area. Washington The 2010 Washington Huskies No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl. Twitter.com/UWVolleyball Facebook.com/UWHuskyVolleyball YouTube.com/UWAthletics was looking to avoid its first three-match losing streak since 2003, and took on 25th-ranked Arizona on Friday. The Huskies rolled in the first two sets and held an 18-15 lead in set three before the Wildcats fought back to take the third and fourth sets, holding UW under.100 hitting in each set. But Washington fought back in set five, hitting.438 led by five kills from senior Becky Perry to complete a wild 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 15-10 win. Perry led with 19 kills, and junior Bianca Rowland had 12 kills and hit.357. Redshirt freshman Jenna Orlandini had a career-best 26 digs and junior Lauren Barfield had nine blocks. The next night the Huskies faced a red-hot Arizona State team which had four straight wins coming in. UW ran off to a 25-16 first set win, but fell behind early in set two and trailed 23-17. Just two points from a level match, the Huskies reeled off seven points in a row to grab a 24-23 lead, and after ASU saved a couple set points, UW came through on its third chance for a 27-25 win that left the Sun Devils stunned. In the third set, UW looked determined not to let up like the night before, and the Huskies hit.400 in the third to win 25-15. Kindra Carlson had 13 kills and sophomore Kylin Muñoz had a careerbest 10 kills, nine coming in the second and third sets. Barfield capped a great weekend at net with eight more blocks. SEATTLE PREPARES FOR NCAA REGIONAL Husky fans can now purchase their tickets for the 2010 NCAA Division-I Volleyball Championship Regional, which will be hosted by Washington at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on December 10-11. The Seattle Regional is one of four sites for the 2010 tournament, and will feature two Round of 16 matches on December 10 and then the Quarterfinal on December 11 with the winner moving on to the Final Four in Kansas City, Missouri. This will be the fourth time that Washington has hosted NCAA Regionals since 2004. In the six NCAA regional games it has hosted, the UW has averaged nearly 5,500 fans per session. Washington has made it through the first two rounds of tourney play to reach their own home court each of the three previous times Seattle has hosted Regionals. Visit GoHuskies.com for ticket details or call the ticket office at (206) 543-2200. HAGGLUND NAMED CLASS AWARD FINALIST Jenna Hagglund has been named one of the 10 finalists for the inaugural Lowe s Senior CLASS Award, which honors seniors that have excelled in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition. Hagglund needs help from Husky fans to win the award, as a fan vote accounts for one third of the final decision. Fans should go to www.seniorclassaward.com to vote as often as once per day through Nov. 23. The West Chester, Ohio native was chosen from an initial list of 30 seniors. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Hagglund is one of three Pac-10 studentathletes nominated, along with Alix Klineman of Stanford and Carli Lloyd of California. ALL HOME MATCHES ARE ONDEMAND If you miss any of Washington s home matches this year, or just want to relive the action or a particular play, remember that every match is available to watch on Comcast OnDemand. The video is taken from the GoHuskies.com live stream with all the accoutrements of your typical television broadcast. Jack Hamann and former Husky Carolyn Farny call the action on the live stream and OnDemand. To find the Huskies, start under Get Local or Sports & Fitness then Local Sports followed by UW and then Volleyball. SCOUTING THE BRUINS UCLA heads into the weekend ranked 11th nationally with a 15-5 overall record. The Bruins are alone in fifth place in the Pac-10 with a 5-4 record, just a game back of the Huskies and Trojans. UCLA defeated the Oregon schools at home last weekend, and also gave then-no. 1 Stanford its first loss of the year at Pauley Pavilion on Oct. 9 in five sets. Sophomore right side hitter Rachael Kidder has seen the most swings in Pac-10 play, averaging 3.88 kills per set. Senior Dicey McGraw has also averaged 3.46 kills/ set in Pac-10 play. Junior Lainey Gera leads the conference with 4.84 digs per set as UCLA leads the league in team digs and is third in opponent hitting percentage at.167. Washington won the first meeting between the teams back on Oct. 2 in Seattle. The Huskies won in straight set, outhitting the Bruins,.331-.115, and leading 12.0-3.0 in blocks led by the nine of Lauren Barfield, who also had seven kills on 10 swings. Washington has won the past eight meetings against the Bruins, though UCLA still leads the all-time series, 39-17. UW has won their past three trips to Pauley. SCOUTING THE TROJANS Washington is tied with the Trojans at 6-3 in league play heading into the weekend. USC will face Washington State first on Friday. Last weekend the Trojans had a 3-2 win over 16thranked Oregon and a sweep over Oregon State at the Galen Center. USC hit a very impressive.392 against the Ducks and.370 against the Beavers, and outdug and outblocked both teams. Five different Trojans had double-figure kills against Oregon, led by All-American Alex Jupiter s 20. Jupiter is fourth in the Pac-10 with 4.41

Weekly Release Page 3 October 26, 2010 kills per set, and is second in aces per set with 0.44. Junior setter Kendall Bateman leads the league with 12.39 assists per set. USC s middles, junior Lauren Williams and freshman Alexis Olgard, rank first and fourth in the Pac-10 respectively in hitting percentage, with Williams at.435 and Olgard at.387. Washington pulled out a 3-2 win over USC in Seattle on Oct. 1, led by 20 kills from Becky Perry and 17 from Bianca Rowland. UW held a 2-0 lead before USC came back to force a fifth, but UW rolled 15-5 in the final set. The Huskies controlled the net with 16.5 blocks to 10.0 for USC, but the Trojans had 10 aces to just 2 for UW. USC won in five sets last year in L.A. and leads the series 34-18. HUSKIES IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS Washington stayed put in both national polls this week after the wins at home against the Arizona schools. The Huskies remained No. 7 in the AVCA poll, matching their season-high. Volleyball Magazine has UW at No. 8 this week. Washington is one of five Pac-10 teams among the top-11 in the AVCA rankings. There was a switch at the top, however, as Cal leapfrogged Stanford for the top spot in the conference. The Bears moved to No. 3 after beating Stanford, which dropped to No. 4. UW checks in at No. 7, with USC at No. 8, and UCLA at No. 11. Oregon is 18th and Arizona is now 23rd, making for seven ranked Pac-10 squads. Arizona State is also receiving votes for the first time this week. The Huskies opened the season ranked in the Top-10 in both preseason polls. The AVCA coaches poll ranked the Dawgs eighth, the second-highest Pac-10 team behind No. 4 Stanford. Volleyball Magazine started the Huskies 10th. Seven Pac- 10 teams were ranked in the AVCA preseason poll, easily the most of any conference, leading the four from the Big Ten. NUMBER CRUNCHING Washington, Stanford, and California have been rotating around at the top of the NCAA in attack percentage, with UW coming in No. 4 this week with a mark of.297, though UW is under.300 for the first time this season. Junior Bianca Rowland ranks third in the conference and 14th nationally at.402. The Huskies are backing that up on defense, as they rank second in the Pac- 10 in opponent hitting percentage, allowing just a.144 mark, having held five opponents under.100. Opponent hitting percentage has dictated wins and losses thus far for UW, as they are 17-0 when holding opponents under.200, but 0-3 when they allow the other team to hit above.250. Jenna Hagglund ranks sixth nationally in assists per set at 11.89, and the Huskies are the only team in the Pac-10 with two outside hitters ranked in the top-10 in kills, as Kindra Carlson is seventh and Becky Perry comes in ninth. Since Lauren Barfield has yet to catch up to the 50% of sets played needed to appear in Pac-10 stats, due to a broken finger at the start of the season, her blocking numbers have gone under the radar. But looking only at conference matches, the junior has moved up to second in blocks per set with 1.48. Barfield had 17 total blocks last weekend against the Arizona schools in eight sets. RECORDS WATCH Setter Jenna Hagglund passed a major milestone in the first set of the year, as she surpassed 4,000 career assists. Hagglund now has 4,781 assists, second in UW history only to Courtney Thompson, the all-time Pac-10 leader. Hagglund now ranks 11th in Pac-10 history, and has a good shot at reaching 5,000 assists, something only eight Pac-10 setters have ever done. On the Bay Area road trip, seniors Becky Perry and Kindra Carlson both eclipsed the 1,000 career kills mark, with Perry hitting the plateau first on Friday against the Cardinal and Carlson getting her 1K kill the next night against the Bears. They are the 14th and 15th Huskies to surpass the mark. Perry now has 1,055 and Carlson has put down 1,035. Carlson and Perry have also moved up to fourth and fifth, respectively, on the UW career points list. Hagglund is also moving up the UW top-10 list in career sets played, currently ranking sixth with 390. Only six Huskies have played 400 sets. REPORTING FOR DUTY Four new faces have joined the Husky family this season, three freshmen and one transfer, and two more Dawgs have discarded the redshirts and moved from the bench to the starting lineup early on this season. Jenna Orlandini and Kylin Muñoz had to wait a long time for their collegiate debuts, each redshirting the 2009 season, but they put the extra time to good use, and both have earned starting roles thus far. Orlandini becomes just the third different Husky to start at libero since 2001, following All-Americans Candace Lee and Tamari Miyashiro. Orlandini has 20 or more digs in five matches this year, and ranks second in the Pac-10 with 4.55 digs/set. Muñoz had 17 kills against the Oregon schools in her first Pac-10 weekend, hitting.341 from the left side, and had a career-best 10 kills vs. Arizona State. Entering into the same waiting game as Orlandini and Muñoz is junior Amanda Gil, who joined UW from Pac-10 rival UCLA and must redshirt the season due to transfer rules. Gil was second in the NCAA and led the Pac-10 in blocks last year, and will make UW better every day in practice. Of the three freshmen, Gabbi Parker of Eugene, Oregon saw first playing time, having now started three matches, averaging 1.70 kills/set and hitting.266. Setter Anna Cesari of Woodway, Wash. and middle blocker Stephanie Stoll of Bellevue, Wash. project more long-term but have bright futures. The match is set for an 8 p.m. start, one hour later than originally scheduled. Washington then closes with four of its final six matches at home. ALL THE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS Washington captured three tournaments during the non-conference season, taking the trophy at the Northwest Challenge, the Bulldog Invitational, and the Pittsburgh Blue & Gold Invite. In Boise, at the Northwest Challenge, Bianca Rowland took home Most Valuable Player honors, after dropping 3.33 kills per set for the tourney and hitting a withering.565. Libero Jenna Orlandini, with a 5.11 digs/set average, and setter Jenna Hagglund (12.44 assists per set) also earned All- Tournament honors. The following week in Athens, Kindra Carlson powered the offense with 53 kills over three UW straight-set wins. The senior was named tourney MVP, hitting.448 for the weekend. Rowland was honored again as was fellow middle blocker Kelcey Dunaway, and Orlandini was honored as Most Valuable Libero. In the final preseason tourney, it was all about the seniors, as Carlson, Becky Perry, and Hagglund all earned All-Tournament distinction. Hagglund became the third different Dawg to win an MVP honor, as she ran the UW offense at a.370 clip over three sweeps, averaging 12.80 assists per set, and also adding nine kills on nine attempts. UW WINS IN AND OUT OF CONFERENCE With a 11-0 run through its non-conference schedule, the Huskies ran their record against non-conference foes to 98-6 since the beginning of the 2003 season. That adds up to a.942 winning percentage out of the Pac-10. Five of the six losses have been five-set nailbiters as well. Though its not as if UW has been shabby in league play either. Starting in 2004 when the Huskies won their first Pac-10 title, they have gone a combined 97-20 (.829) in conference matches and finished no worse than a tie for second. HAGGLUND EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Husky senior Jenna Hagglund was named Pac- 10 Women s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 13-19. The two-time All-American senior setter was named Most Valuable Player of the Pittsburgh Blue and Gold Invitational over the weekend, as the ninth-ranked Huskies swept three matches against Pittsburgh, Eastern Illinois and Robert Morris. Hagglund averaged 12.80 assists per game in the tournament and was perfect with nine kills on nine attempts. She led a Washington offense that hit.370 over the three matches. On Friday against Eastern Illinois, Hagglund matched her career high with five kills on five attempts with six digs and three blocks. The next day, she had a season-high 42 assists against Robert Morris and added three more kills. It is Hagglund s third-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and her first since winning the honor on Oct. 13, 2008. It is also the 29th weekly recognition for Washington all-time. 2009 IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR Washington entered the 2009 season with typically high expectations, and burst out of the gate with straight set wins in each of its first 15 matches. Washington was the last team in the country to lose a set, winning a programrecord 46 in a row. In a win at the Tampa Twice Tournament, the Huskies swept then-no. 9 Minnesota and then-no. 4 Florida on back-to-back nights. All told the Huskies went 10-0 in non-conference play. Stanford gave UW its first loss, 3-2 in Palo Alto, but the Huskies got revenge with a sweep of Stanford in Seattle. It was Stanford s first straight-set Pac-10 loss since 2006. The Dawgs finished with a 13-5 Pac-10 record, and had to settle for second after dropping the finale in five sets to Oregon after having three match points go by the wayside. The Huskies, ranked No. 3 for much of the season, were seeded sixth in their eighth consecutive NCAA tournament and sent to Colorado State for the first and second rounds. After beating Northern Colorado in the opener, UW was upset by CSU on its home court, 3-1, to end the season. Postseason honors were numerous, as four Huskies earned AVCA All-America honors: Kindra Carlson (2nd Team), Tamari Miyashiro (2nd), Jenna Hagglund, (3rd), and Bianca Rowland (HM). Carlson, Miyashiro and Hagglund were voted All-Pac-10, and senior Jill Collymore was an Academic All-American. During the year, Miyashiro broke the school digs record, finishing ninth in NCAA history at 2,382. Rowland set the school record for attack percentage, hitting.456 to lead the Pac-10 and rank third in the NCAA. Washington led the Pac-10 in hitting at.288 and also limited opponents to a league-best.174 percentage.
