April 10, 2017 Dear Cheerleading Coach: Thank you for your interest in the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival 12th Cheerleading Competition! My name is Jill Spearman Macklin and I am the chairman of the cheerleading competition for the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival. We have invited dozens of schools from this region of Ohio. The competition will be on Thursday, August 10, 2017 beginning at 6 pm and will end at approximately 8 pm. The competition will take place on 42 x 36 foot mats at the South Main Street and Gambier Street intersection. Please pass the word on to the coaches representing the schools in your area, including your Varsity, Junior Varsity, Junior High, and Pee-Wee / Colt squads. Feel free to make copies of the forms for the other coaches. The rules to the competition are enclosed. Please read carefully and share them with everyone on your squad participating in the competition. The registration form enclosed needs to be completed and returned to me no later than August 1, 2017 along with a copy of your schools certificate of insurance. Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival 12 th Annual Cheer Competition Questions & Answers 1 1) When is the competition? The competition is Thursday, August 10 th, 2017. 2) What time will the competition begin? The competition will begin at 6pm and end around 8pm. 3) Is there a cost to participate in this competition? No, there is no cost to participate in the competition. This is a state/regional we want you to have fun and show your talent competition. 4) Where will we be performing? The event will be performed at the South Main and Gambier Street intersection in Downtown Mount Vernon. 5) What type of surface will the participants be cheering on? The participants will be cheering on foam mats. 6) Will there be trophies? There will be trophies for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd places in each division. 7) How are the groups divided when performing? The groups are divided into divisions of Varsity, Junior Varsity, Junior High, Pee- Wee and Colt. 8) Will each participant be recognized? Yes, each participant will receive a participant gift. 9) What do the participants wear? They wear their cheerleading uniforms. 10) Can the participants wear jewelry? The participants cannot wear any kind of jewelry. This includes earrings, tongue rings, belly button rings, nose rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches. 11) Is there tumbling / stunting allowed? No. There will be no tumbling or stunting in this competition, with the exception of forward rolls only. 12) What will the judges be looking for? The judges will be looking at 14 different categories that include motion technique, voice projection, transitions, formation/spacing, flow/space, jumps, dance, synchronization/timing, effective/appropriate words, effective/ appropriate skills, use of signs/pom-poms/flags/megaphones, showmanship / presentation, choreography, and overall impression. 13) How long do we perform? A maximum of 2 minutes 30 seconds with at least 1 minute of music/dance.

2 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival 12th Annual Cheer Competition Rules & Regulations Eligibility: 1) Junior High participants must be attending 6th, 7th or 8th grade at the time of the scheduled competition. 2) Junior Varsity participants must be attending 9th, 10th or 11th grade at the time of the scheduled competition. 3) Varsity participants must be attending 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade at the time of the competition 4) Pee-wee / Colt ***Each participant can only compete in one of the 4 divisions*** General Guidelines: 1.Use of mini-tramps, springboards, or any apparatus used to propel a participant is not permitted. 2.Drops (knee, seat, thigh, front, back and split drops) from a jump, stand or inverted position are prohibited unless the majority of the weight is first borne on the hands/feet, which breaks the impact of the drop. 3.Only the following props are allowed: flags, pom-poms, and signs. 4.Soft sole tennis shoes must be worn. 5.Jewelry of any kind is prohibited. This includes earrings, nose, tongue and belly button rings, necklaces and pins on uniforms. 6.Mascots may not be utilized in this competition. 7.No substitutions of participants. Interruption of performance: The chairman of the competition reserves the right to stop a routine due to an obvious injury. In the event that an injury causes the squad s routine to be interrupted during competition, the squad will have 15 minutes to regroup before performing their routine again. Judging will resume from the point at which the injury/interruption occurred as determined by the chairman. No tumbling (with the exception of forward rolls) / No stunts / No pyramids

3 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival 12th Annual Cheer Competition Rules & Regulations General Guidelines: 1. Each squad will perform a choreographed routine to last a maximum of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. 2. Each routine must include one cheer, one chant and a music segment. The music segment must not exceed 1 minute and 30 seconds. No voice-overs or words may be recorded to make the team s vocal projection sound louder. 3. Cheerleaders should enter their performance area in a timely fashion. 4. Timing will begin with the first organized word, movement, or note of music by the squad after they are officially announced and they have taken the floor (including entrance, not exit.) 5. Timing will end with the last organized word, movement or note of music by the squad. 6. Music must be on a CD. A duplicate CD must be made available. A representative from your team (coach/advisor/director) must know exactly when to start the music. The representative with your music should report to the music area when the squad is on deck. The person responsible for bringing the CD to the music area is also responsible for inserting the CD into the player and pushing play and stop at the proper times. All CDs should be labeled with the name of the school/squad and coach/advisors name. 7. Squads should utilize all areas of their squad s technical strength in jumps, motion techniques, projection, expression, choreography, showmanship and dance. 8. The squads will be called three times: once as the team is in warm-up, second when the squad is on deck and third for the squad to perform. 9. Routines must be appropriate for family viewing. Any vulgar or suggestive movements, words, or music may result in score deduction. No tear-away uniforms or removal of clothing is allowed. Violation of any of these guidelines may result in a point deduction from the final score. 10.Signs, pom-poms, flags, and megaphones are welcomed and encouraged. Performance Area: All squads competing at the competition will perform on a 42 deep x 36 foot wide competition mat.
