` 2012-13 GRIZ HOOPS (Game #24) Griz conclude Big Sky road trip at Idaho State, Saturday, Feb. 16 THE GAME: The 12th-ranked (CollegeInsider.com s Feb. 11th Mid-Major Top 25 Poll) and University of Montana Grizzlies (18-5/14-1 BSC) conclude a two-day road trip, playing the Idaho State Bengals (5-19/4-11) in a Big Sky Conference game, Saturday, Feb. 16, with tip-off in ISU s Reed Gym at 7:05 p.m. RADIO/STREAMING/TV: The Voice of the Griz is Mick Holien, a 13-time Montana Broadcaster of the Year, who calls the action on local KGVO Radio (1290 AM/101.5 FM) and the Griz Radio Network for his 20th season in a row. Live audio streaming and stats are on gogriz.com, while video streaming is at BigSkyTV.org. There is no TV coverage for the game. (The Grizzly Radio Network is listed on add 4). GRIZ STREAK SNAPPED: Montana s 25-game Big Sky regular-season winning streak ended with an 87-63 loss at Weber State on Feb. 14. UM had just broken the league record of 24 wins in a row set by the Wildcats from the 1967-68 to the 1969-70 seasons. UM s last loss against a Big Sky team was 80-64 last season (Jan. 14, 2013), in Ogden, to the Wildcats. Thursday s setback at WSU also halted an 11-game league road winning streak by the Griz. GRIZ TIED OWN MARK: With the recent 78-58 victory over North Dakota, the Griz tied their own school record for consecutive wins with 14 -- a mark they set last season. GRIZ-BENGAL SERIES: The Griz lead the series 95-44 and they have won 6 in a row. D-1 WINNING STREAK: Prior to the loss at WSU, Montana had been tied with Memphis for the second longest winning skein in the country with 14. Memphis now has 15 wins in a row, while Akron in the leader with 16 straight. GRIZ RANKED NATIONALLY IN FT% & 3-POINT%: The Griz are ranked eighth in the nation in free throw percentage at 76.3%, while Davidson is the leader at 81.1%. Montana is ranked 16th in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.5%, and the leader is Indiana at 42.7%. CHERRY UPDATE: Senior guard Will Cherry, UM s all-time leader in career steals with 255, is now tied for second in Big Sky history with Nevada s Kevin Soares (255 steals, 1988-92). Cherry has moved up to seventh in career scoring at Montana with 1,408 points, passing Jordan Hasquet (1,396 points, 2006-09). He remains fourth in career assists at UM with 382. (See add 3 for Will s career stats rankings). 1000-POINT CLUB!: UM s Kareem Jamar and Mathias Ward are both nearing the 1,000- point plateau in their careers. There are 27 players (including Cherry), who have scored 1,000 or more career points at Montana. Jamar has 962 career points and needs just 38 more to reach 1,000, while Ward has 921, and he needs 79 more to get to a 1,000 points. MONTANA GRIZZLIES (18-5/14-1) PPG RPG MISC. He was recognized for the Grizzlies success in 2012, as he was named the NABC Division I All- District 6 Coach of the Year by The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He was also tabbed the Big Sky s Coach of the Year. He s the fifth coach ever at Montana (since 1963) to be named the Big Sky s coach of the year. Three seasons ago, the Griz went 22-10, won the league s post-season tourney, and advanced to the NCAAs, losing 62-57 to New Mexico. Coach Tinkle has now been to the NCAA tournament a total of five times two as the head man and three times as an assistant coach at Montana. His NCAA trips were in 2009-10 and 2011-12 as the head man against New Mexico and Wisconsin, respectively. He was also a member of three other UM NCAA tournament teams: 2001-02 against Oregon with head coach Don Holst; in 2004-05 vs. Washington; and in 2005-06 season (against Nevada and Boston College) with head man Larry Krystkowiak. Tinkle, 47, was named the 26th head men s basketball coach in the summer of 2006. He served as an assistant coach at UM for the previous five seasons, working with Krystkowiak, Pat Kennedy (2002-04), and Holst. Griz...432 Coach Wayne Tinkle Quotes On: ISU GAME: It s a tough place (Reed Gym) to play. They play an ugly style of basketball. They re really pesky on defense in that zone. They ve got good players who are getting near the finish line here, and they are really going to want to put a good finish on things, and make a real run for the (post-season) tournament. We can t think at all that that game is going to be anything but a battle; because all of our games over the years have been just that at Idaho State. We will focus our attention on them after Thursday s affair, and make sure we ve got a game plan in place to go in there and be successful. THE GRIZ BEING 18-4 AND RANKED 12TH IN THE MOST RECENT MID-MAJOR POLL: It s pretty cool stuff. We really haven t had a lot of time to soak it all in. But, I will tell you, if I can be selfish for a minute -- to be the head coach at your alma mater and to be in the middle of what we are doing -- it s just a thrill. We enjoyed it for about a minute-and-a-half after Saturday night (the UND win), and we moved on to the next thing. We are staying humble and hungry, knowing that the biggest part of the season is still in front of us. Maybe some time in the springtime we can look back and enjoy what this group did. 3-Point FG Pct. 3-Pt. FG Pct. Defense 1. Weber St...421 1. Weber State...267 2. Montana...395 2.
