Luplow s first inning homer sinks Gonsalves, Miracle Miracle starter Stephen Gonsalves surrendered a three-run homer to Jordon Luplow in the first inning of the season opener at Hammond Stadium on Thursday evening. Luplow s bomb came with two outs and was his first of the year after hitting 12 at Class-A West Virginia in 2015. Marauders starter Alex McRae hurled five shutout frames. The only Miracle run came in the bottom of the eighth inning when an RBI groundout to short from T.J. White drove in Tanner English. Gonsalves went six innings in a quality start with three runs allowed on six hits and six strikeouts. The Fort Myers bullpen strung three scoreless innings together to finish the game with an inning a piece from Brian Gilbert, Luke Bard and Raul Fernandez. Talented rotation key for early success Jay and Stewart headline the Miracle starters, but manager Jeff Smith will have a deep six-man rotation to open the year. Stephen Gonsalves, the Twins No. 7 (Baseball America)/No. 9 (MLB) prospect, ended last year with the Miracle and returns after a season where he racked up accolades. Felix Jorge, a righty, is the Twins No. 26 prospect (MLB) and posted a 2.79 ERA in 23 starts while also making the Midwest League Midseason All-Star team in 2015. Randy Rosario is a talented lefty who runs the ball up to the mid-90 s and is currently on the 40-man roster while right-hander Keaton Steele has an impressive college pedigree after being selected in the eighth round out of the University of Missouri in 2014. In 2016, the Opening Day lineup combined for just 28 homers with Trey Vavra s six pacing the group. The Miracle may not have much power, but the lineup should provide some excitement on the base paths. University of South Carolina product Tanner English led the entire Twins system with 37 stolen bases and will see time at the Miracle lead-off spot. Nick Gordon swiped 25 bags with Cedar Rapids while Chad Christensen stole 22 bases with the Miracle. Van Steensel returns to lead Miracle bullpen Todd Van Steensel was one of the most effective relievers in the FSL in 2015. Leading the Miracle staff with 46 appearances, tied for third-most in the FSL, Van Steensel was second in the league in strikeouts per nine at 11.05; behind only Matt Milroy of Jupiter. Todd converted 13-of-16 save opportunities and posted a 2.32 ERA. Van Steensel will be joined by returnees Trevor Hildenberger, Luke Westphal and Brian Gilbert in the pen. Newcomers include Yorman Landa, who is on the Twins 40-man roster, Raul Fernandez and Luke Bard. A Georgia Tech product and compensation round selection in 2012, Bard actually pitched one inning for the Miracle in 2013 and has wrestled injury since his draft. Bard was finally healthy in 2015 and went 7-1 with a 2.41 ERA in Cedar Rapids. Miracle vs. FSL vs. South Home Road Total Bradenton Charlotte Jupiter Palm Beach St. Lucie vs. North Home Road Total Brevard Co. Clearwater Daytona Dunedin Lakeland Tampa The Florida State League plays a complete 140-game schedule. The Miracle will match up with FSL South teams for 18 games and an additional two (20) vs. Bradenton. Fort Myers will play eight games against all six FSL North Division teams; one home and one road four game series.
