CONNECTICUT SKI COUNCIL skiclub.com March, 2018 president@skiclub.com PRESIDENT S MESSAGE COUNCIL MEETING: I hope that everyone has squeezed in every possible moment to enjoy what has been a very good season for winter sports! Collectively, our member clubs have offered over 30 trips this year to mountain resorts throughout the world! I hope you have all taken advantage of at least one of these opportunities to expand your travel and skiing horizons. Kids Day was a great success, with the council being able to give 74 children the chance to ski free for the day and get a proper lesson. The staff at Mt. Southington did a superb job in organizing young skiers by age and ability, and giving them a solid experience to expand their winter sports knowledge while having a fun time doing it. OnSnow Weekend will take place next weekend, and I am sure that everyone will have a great time at Okemo. Monday Night Racing is winding down, with just 1 more week to go as I write this. 14 clubs sent racers out during the course of the eight week series, and the participants have had a fabulous time skiing and socializing so far. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SKI VOUCHERS Nancy Nolan (Southern tier) and Cheryl Parmalee (Northern tier). As always, if you have any questions or concerns about vouchers, please contact these folks to assist you. AWARENESS DAYS John Filakovsky. PLEASE do not download the Awareness Days schedule to your club s website, as it does change slightly as the season progresses. Keep your club members informed that the CSC website is THE place to go for the most complete information about this and other Council activities. THANK YOU ALL for making this the cleanest year that I can remember for the proper use of the ski vouchers and Awareness Day stickers. CSC SNOWBALL - Melissa Patterson and Marsha Baretta have booked the Windsor Marriott for Saturday, November 17, 2018. More details to follow. NATIONAL SKI COUNCIL FEDERATION Ben Tomczak will provide updates about the Federation activities and news of interest soon. MONDAY NIGHT RACING As mentioned, the first seven weeks have gone off without a hitch, and everyone is enjoying themselves while getting in some winter fun. Thank you again Rob Dexter! KIDS DAY A GREAT SUCCESS!! It seems that holding this event on the Sunday before the Super Bowl works out well for a lot of people. I do not know the date for 2019, but it will be the weekend before the Super Bowl. OnSNOW WEEKEND A special THANK YOU to Ron Kaprazewski and Marsha Baretta for working hard to make this such a fun event. Requests for bids will be sent out shortly to various mountains to determine who will host the OnSnow Carnival next year. We will announce the date of the selection meeting shortly. (Continued on page 2) March 13, 2018 LOCATION: The Back 9 at the Stanley Golf Course, New Britain Following meeting: April 10, 2018 Newsletter Deadline The next newsletter will be for April deadline is March 20. MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS!!! don.ludwig45@gmail.com Thanks, Ginny Ludwig NOMINATING COMMITTEE and ELECTION OF OFFICERS This spring the CT Ski Council will elect both a President and a Treasurer, each for 2-years terms. If you or anyone in your club is interested in either of these positions, please contact a member of the Nominating committee. They are: Kevin Cronin, Joe Mahowski, and Paul D Attilio. BEN TOMCZAK, our current Recording Secretary, has placed his name on the slate for the position of President. Anyone else?

President s Message, continued CSC WEBSITE Bill Leuze, our Council webmaster, has done a superb job this year in upgrading and expanding the Council website. A round of applause for Bill! Bill will be glad to post information about your club s activities just email him the info. NEWSLETTER To have information included in the April, 2018 newsletter, send it to Ginny Ludwig, our newsletter editor, by March 20. PLEASE NOTE HER NEW EMAIL ADDRESS, found on page 1. ELECTION COMMITTEE We have 2 Officers positions up for election this year at the annual meeting. Please let the Committee know if you wish to be considered for President or Treasurer of the Council. We would love to have new Council members step up to serve us all. Current and former officers will work hard to ensure that you have plenty of support and guidance. Please think about it. COUNCIL SUPPORT OF SKI-RELATED NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS - We will be hearing from several charitable organizations involved in the sport over the next couple of months. I would love to see the Council and our member clubs get more involved in these efforts with our time and our money. KEEP HAVING FUN, AND ENJOYING YOUR WINTER ACTIVITIES! See you all at The Back Nine at STANLEY GOLF COURSE at 7:30 PM on MARCH 13, 2018. Jonathan Racing Bits and Pieces RACING AWARDS Will be handed out at the April 10 CSC meeting. Awards will be sorted by club. Any unattached (no club noted) racer can get their awards by contacting Rob Dexter at skicouncil@sbcglobal.net, and making arrangements for pick-up after that date. STATE RACES Downhill Okemo Mar 2 9:30 AM Snowboard Okemo Mar 3 10:00 AM Cross Country Okemo Golf Course Mar 4 9:00 AM From Our Race Chairman. Monday Night Racing Series (8 Weeks) at Mount Southington Racing has been going well, now 7 weeks completed. The last few weeks were a study in contrast, as week 6 saw hard and icy snow, as icy as any Olympic course. Most of the 143 racers had sharp edges, but some were sliding by the gates. Week 7 had much softer snow, as l09 racers came and braved the forecasted rain. The clouds parted and the rain held off when the race was in progress. Looking at the weather app just before racing, the rain went to the north and south of the mountain- it could have been much wetter. Mount Southington has been doing an excellent job of setting courses, and since the afternoon high school races have been completed, there are no ruts to get around these last few weeks. Head Skis held a demo on week 7, with a NASTAR course in place to allow for ski testing. A number of club skiers enjoyed the ski tests. The competition is as fierce as it was last year with Newington Ski Club and Mt Laurel battling for first place bragging rights. Newington on week 6 earned one more point than Mt Laurel, but, week 7 and the rain showed that Mt Laurel likes soggy weather, as they jumped 239 points ahead of Newington that night. Mt Laurel is in the lead after 7 weeks at 4782, and Newington is now at the adjusted total of 4059. With the forecast of rain and some 70+ degree days in the next week, race 8 might be in question. We could still have a pizza party night even if there is no racing, as the restaurant is willing to open. Stay tuned! OnSnow Carnival at Okemo, VT, March 2, 3, 4, 2018 Four forms have been sent out to all team captains for this year s OnSnow Carnival at Okemo Mountain in Vermont. They are: The weekend seed list. The roster for each activity (an Excel spreadsheet for each individual event, to be submitted by team captain in order of their team seed). The OnSnow waiver (each and every weekend participant must sign and submit one). The Onsnow Carnival info package and schedule. The now-extended deadline for all OnSnow information to be returned is Saturday, February 24, to the OnSnow coordinator, names as provided on the forms. Still hoping for good weather the first weekend of March! Get your club organized to come out and enjoy the final competition weekend of the season! Rob Dexter skicouncil@sbcglobal.net
