2005-06 UNLV Team Captains (Adam Martinson, Tiffany Vincent, Brandon Nelms, Julie Babin, Eli Tanimoto) 2004-05 Mountain West Conference Men s Swimming & Diving Champions 2005-06 Rebel Swimming & Diving 2005-06 Rebel Swimming & Diving UNLV Men s & Women s Swimming & Diving Media Guide 17

2005-06 Women s Outlook 2004-05 Mountain West Conference Women s Swimming & Diving Champions The Rebels used a mixture of old and new last year, as 16 freshmen joined several outstanding upperclassmen to lead UNLV to its first-ever Mountain West Conference championship, which snapped BYU s five-year stranglehold on the conference trophy. The Rebels will miss a key pair of swimmers from last year, Raluca Udriou (2005 MWC Swimmer of the Year) and Shayna Burns, who are both serving as student assistant coaches this season. However, with the experience gained from last year and the improvements made in the pool over the summer, the Rebels are confident they have what it takes to repeat as conference champions. The top of the league is going to be very tight, especially with the addition of TCU, making it even more important for UNLV to advance its swimmers to the finals at the conference championship meet. It s a challenge the team is ready for. FREESTYLE This looks to be the Rebels strength in 2005-06, with the sprinters being led by sophomore Marina Sandback, the top freshman in the conference last year. Sandback posted runner-up finishes in both the 50 and 100 frees, missing the 50 free title by just.01 seconds. Also expected to final again will be senior Jessie Bradshaw, the 2004 MWC 100 free champion. Both should push each other during the season in which they look to contend for both the 50 and 100 free titles, as well as qualify for their first NCAA Championships. Juniors Katie Wronn and Lauren Browning have scored at conference in the past and look to do so again, while combining to fill out one of the top relays in the league. In the distance events, Julie Babin looks to carry the load, having three topfive conference finishes in her two years at UNLV. The coaches are excited about Jenna Neff and Lani Seaman. They are also very happy with the addition of Bailey Kuestermeyer of Pullayup, Wash., who will be a strong threat to score at conference. Marina Sandback recorded runner-up finishes in all three of her events at the MWC Championships in her freshman season. BACKSTROKE This is one area the Rebels will see a loss, as Udriou won a total of three MWC titles in 2003 and 2005. The coaches feel they have a strong replacement in Amanda Weinbrecht, an outstanding backstroker from San Diego. Calif., who has what it takes for UNLV to claim the best backstroker in the league. Megan Hunt- Higgans and Tiffany Vincent will both swim backstroke as well, while Babin will swim the 200 back this season. BREASTSTROKE This was a potential area of concern for UNLV with the loss of Burns, the school record holder in both the 100 and 200. However, that is offset by sophomore Kim Bonney, who joined the team in the spring semester and promptly won the 200 MWC title in her first conference championship action. Bonney will look to challenge for both the 100 and 200 MWC titles this season. She will be joined by Kuestermeyer, who just missed her cut in the US Open this summer. BUTTERFLY Sandback will also be the team s top flyer after setting a school record in the 100 with her runner-up performance at conference. Vincent and Weinbrecht will both swim fly during the season as well, while freshman Sarah Pirie of Phoenix, Ariz., will swim the 200. IM UNLV brings back another former MWC champion in Babin, who set the league record while winning the 400 title in the 2003-04 championships. The Rebels hope to build more depth into this area as the season goes on, with Kuestermeyer and Bonney both expected to make a strong showing in the 200 and 400 events. DIVING Coming off a year in which they had one of their best-ever season-long performances, the Rebels return six divers that once again look to make the difference at the conference championships. Nichole McLean leads the divers, while UNLV added a key freshman in Brandy Chapman, a Las Vegas native and high school state champion. RELAYS The Rebels are stacked in the freestyle relays, returning all four members of last year s title-winning 200 and 400 free relays. UNLV also returns half of the championship 400 medley relay and have the pieces to challenge for gold in both the 200 and 400 as well. 18 UNLV Men s & Women s Swimming & Diving Media Guide
