Nawrocki, the reigning conference player of the week, delivered his second game with 20 or more points this season and his team-leading third double-double (points-rebounds). Hopkins jumped out to a 39-23 lead at the half, holding McDaniel to only 22.6 percent shooting from the field. A pair of three-pointers by the Green Terror to open the second half closed the lead to 10, at 39-29. However, a 12-4 Hopkins run in the first six minutes of the period put the game out of reach. The Blue Jays would later raise their advantage to as much as 27, going up 72-45 with 5:28 remaining. Hopkins finished the game shooting 54.4 percent (31-57) from the field, while the Green Terror made only 33.3 percent (20-60) of their field goals. The Blue Jays out-rebounded the Green Terror, 53-21, including 16 Hopkins offensive boards. Three other scorers reached double figures for Hopkins, including Matt Griffin with 15. Griffin was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw stripe. Scouting the Red Devils Dickinson took down the league s other remaining undefeated team, Franklin & Marshall, with a 59-54 win on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Mayser Center. The Red Devils claimed their second consecutive win in Lancaster by shooting 50 percent (24-48) from the field and knocking down 8-of-15 from behind the three-point arc. Matt Keys led the way for the Red Devils, scoring 24 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Keys leads Dickinson with 14.3 points per game this season. In seven games this season, Dickinson has only played the F&M game away from Carlisle. After Saturday s contest with the Blue Jays, the Red Devils will play six of their next seven on the road, beginning with a matchup against Division I Lafayette on Dec. 20. Last meeting Johns Hopkins guard T.J. Valerio hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining and Dickinson s Matt Keys misfired from three-point range at the buzzer as the Blue Jays picked up their seventh win in eight games with a 58-57 victory over the host Red Devils on Jan 22, 2005. After the Red Devils gained a 57-55 lead with 20 seconds left, Hopkins worked the ball to Valerio, who wasted little time launching what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer. Dickinson used a timeout to set up one final play, but Keys was off the mark and the Blue Jays picked up their third straight win in Carlisle. Matt Griffin scored a career-high 22 points in just 23 minutes to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who count three one-point wins in their last four games. Valerio contributed 11 points off the bench. Brad Litchfield had game-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds, while Keys added 12 points. 300 and counting Head coach Bill Nelson is entering his 20th season at Hopkins, sporting a 315-188 (.626) record. Nelson earned his 300th win in a 85-38 win at Cal Tech on Dec. 31, 2004. Under his guidance, Hopkins has compiled 10 consecutive winning seasons, including five 20 win campaigns and six NCAA Tournament appearances. Nelson has logged 25 career seasons, including two at Rochester Institute of Technology and four at Nazareth, giving him a 420-241 career record. 500 times The Nov. 26 game at Furman marked the 500th time that the Blue Jays have taken the court with head coach Bill Nelson at the helm. Since 1919, Hopkins has played in 1,625 games. Nelson s tenure with the Blue Jays has spanned over 30 percent of the games that the program has played since its inception. McCone signed on with the Blue Jays in the 1989-90 season, the first time a Nelson-guided team qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Richardson has been alongside Nelson for 310 Hopkins wins, entering his 20th season with the Blue Jays program. Joining McCone and Richardson this season is former Blue Jay guard Danny Burruss, who appeared in 61 games for Hopkins from 1999-2003. Masters of their domain From the 1994-95 through the 2004-05 season, Hopkins has racked up a 121-37 record in Goldfarb Gym, the second-most home wins among Centennial Conference teams. In Bill Nelson s 19 seasons, Hopkins is 189-49 on the Goldfarb floor. Making his mark After two complete seasons, Danny Nawrocki s name appears in the Hopkins record book, as a career scoring average of 12.7 places him 11th all-time. Nawrocki also has an opportunity to finish his career among the leaders in field goal percentage, as he s made 60.9 of his attempts in two seasons. Dan Jackson (1978-82) heads up the all-time list with a 60.9 career percentage entering this season. Lock-down defense Last season, Hopkins held its opponents to 40.2 percent shooting from the field, while the Blue Jays enjoyed 46.7 percent shooting. Behind the arc, Hopkins has been even tougher to score on, as opponents only hit on 25.9 percent of their chances last season, leading the Centennial Conference in both categories. Hopkins held its opponents to fewer than 60 points seven times in 2004-05. Nationally, the Blue Jays ranked 40th in Division III scoring defense (64.2 ppg), 43rd in field goal percentage defense, In 2005-06, Hopkins opponents have shot 43.9 percent from the arc, but only 33.3 percent from behind the three-point arc. Seasoned juniors Coming into the 2005-06 season, the junior class and its six members (Armen, Griffin, Morley, Nawrocki, Valerio) have collected the most minutes along with the most points and rebounds of any of the three returning classes of players. Entering the season, the juniors have made a combined 67 starts, as opposed to the sophomores 27 and the 25 for the seniors. On the scoresheet, the third-year players have been the most dominant, collecting 1,347 points, while the sophomores and seniors have combined for 577 points. The juniors have also cleaned the glass, collecting 790 boards, while the sophomores and seniors have 303 total rebounds. Minimizing the losses Hopkins only loses one player from its starting lineup in 2004-05: Eric Toback. A First Team All-Centennial Pick last season, Toback was the team s leading scorer with 14.5 points per game. Toback closed out his career 12th on the Hopkins career scoring list with 967 points. Inside contribution This season, the Blue Jays are getting a siginificant scoring boost inside from Matt Griffin and Danny Nawrocki. Since last season, Hopkins is 11-3 in games where Griffin scores 10 or more points. Nawrocki has scored in double figures in each game this season, scoring 18.3 points per game in conference play. All-tournament A pair of Blue Jays got Pride of Maryland All-Tournament nods, as Matt Griffin and T.J. Valerio led Hopkins to a 2-1 record during the tournament. Valerio scored 51 points during the three-game stretch, while Griffin averaged 16 points per game, shooting 69.2 percent from the field. For both Griffin and Valerio, this was their first career all-tournament nod. Charity stripe success After hitting on only 61.6 percent of their tries from the line in 2004-05, the Blue Jays connected on 76.2 (16-22) percent of their attempts in the season opener against Salisbury and 77.3 percent of their tries (17-22) against Villa Julie. Since then, Hopkins has gone 73.1 percent at the line for the season, including a season-best 77.3 percent in a loss at Villa Julie on Nov. 20. The Blue Jays are 73.1 percent in conference games. Individually, Matt Griffin produced a team-best 7-for-7 at the stripe in a home win over McDaniel on Dec. 6. Overtime struggles Hopkins 81-78 loss at Villa Julie in the Pride of Maryland Tournament was their fourth overtime loss in five tries since the 2000-01 season. The Blue Jays picked up their only overtime win this decade last season in an 86-81 win over Frostburg State on Nov. 19.
