Game #51, Road Game #27 Wednesday, May 31st Durham Bulls Athletic Park 7:05 PM Rochester Red Wings (23-23 / 4th / 9.5 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (30-20 / 1st) RHP Yohan Pino (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Blake Snell (1-0, 3.86) Tonight s Game The Bulls and Red Wings play their third game in 24 hours tonight one night after the two clubs split their doubleheader at the DBAP. Durham is trying to finish a back-and-forth month of May on a high note, which would give the club a second straight winning month to begin the season. The Red Wings meanwhile are already guaranteed a losing month with a 10-13 record in May after going 13-10 to open the season in April. Including tonight, the two teams have only two games against each other all season, with the clubs having split their first four contests this season. Last Night The Durham Bulls both extended and snapped their losing streak Tuesday night against the Rochester Red Wings, as the Bulls dropped game one 6-1 before cruising to a 4-0 victory in the night cap from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The defeat in the first game was the fifth straight loss for the Bulls, the longest skid of the season for the top team in the International League South Division. Durham recovered in game two however, with the team recording their sixth shutout of the season to win their seventh home game in their last eight contests. Losing Streak Extended, Then Snapped By losing the first game of their doubleheader on Tuesday, the Bulls extended their losing streak to a season-worst five consecutive games. Fortunately Durham was able to stop the skid there, with the club s 4-0 victory in the night cap putting them back in the win column for the first time since May 24. Prior to the five-game losing streak, the Bulls had previously suffered through a four-game skid from May 9-12. Let s Hope This Isn t A Trend While there s no way to predict the frequency of doubleheaders, the Bulls two twinbills this early in the 2017 season already puts them on pace for roughly six such days this year. That would be the most doubleheaders in a season for Durham since the club played in seven back in 2014, where they went 6-8. Field Day for Johnny & Mallex Tuesday s two games and 14 total innings provided outfielder Johnny Field with seven total at-bats, which he took advantage of with three hits (two doubles), two runs, and an RBI. Mallex Smith also enjoyed a good overall night, going 1-3 with a stolen base in game one before finishing 3-3 with three swiped bags in the nightcap for a 4-6 day overall. The only other player to record at least one hit in both games was Casey Gillaspie, who went 1-3 and 1-4 in game one and two respectively. Runnin With the Bulls The Bulls saw an uptick in their extra-base hits on Tuesday but the most noticeable improvement in the offense came from the running game, as Durham stole three bases in each contest while only being caught once. Mallex Smith unsurprisingly led the way for the Bulls, with the speedster going 1/2 in stolen bases in game one before taking a trio of bags in game two to give him a team-high 12 on the year. Also picking up steals in the doubleheader where Johnny Filed (3) and Kean Wong (3). Pitchers Pick up the Innings Doublheaders always pose the threat of milking a team s pitching staff, but the Bulls made it out of Tuesday s twinbill needing only four total hurlers. LHP Ryan Yarbrough carried the load with six innings pitched in game one before Jeff Ames tossed the final frame. Game two saw reliever Yoel Espinal eat up four innings in a spot start, while Andrew Kittredge finished off the shutout with three scoreless frames. Shutout No. 6 Speaking of shutouts last night s game two blanking marked the sixth shutout of the season for the Bulls pitching staff, and their first of only seven innings. Durham is currently on pace for 17 shutouts this year, which would be the most for the club through at least 2014. Defense Delivers A big reason why the Bulls were able to shutout the Red Wings in game two last night was because of several standout plays by the Durham defenders. Mallex Smith led the highlight reel with a leaping catch at the center field wall to take away a double in the fourth, before he came charging in and drove to snag a line drive in center in the fifth. The Bulls also turned in a pair of gems in the fifth inning of game one, as Johnny Field made a great sliding catch in the foul territory of right field for the first out before Willy Adames dove to his right to snag a line drive at short for the inning s final out. Sole Still Searching Infielder Alec Sole joined the Bulls on Tuesday for his third tour of duty with the team in the last three years. The 23-yearold Holbrook, NY native is still searching for his first hit with Durham however, as he was a combined 0-14 in his time with the Bulls before going 0-3 in game two last night. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak W1 Home 17-9 Road 13-11 vs. RHP (starter) 24-16 vs. LHP (starter) 6-4 vs. South Division 16-7 vs. North Division 7-7 vs. West Division 7-6 Day 3-7 Night (5:05+) 27-13 Extra Innings 3-5 Shutouts 3-1 One-Run Games 7-4 Three or fewer 10-10 Four or more 13-6 Scoring First 19-10 Opponent Scores First 11-10 Leading after 6 25-0 Trailing after 6 4-19 Tied after 6 1-1 Series Openers 10-6 Series Finales 5-7 Rubber Matches 2-0 Doubleheader Games 3-1 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/0/1 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/1 3-Game Series 6-2 Sweep/Swept 1/1 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 3/2/0 Sweep/Swept 2/1 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 2-2 Tuesday 5-4 Wednesday 5-2 Thursday 5-1 Friday 4-3 Saturday 7-2 Sunday 2-6 April 16-7 May 14-13 June 0-0 July 0-0 August 0-0 September 0-0 2017 BULLS vs. RED WINGS Overall 2-2 DBAP 1-1 Frontier Field 1-1 2016 Head-to-Head 3-4 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Thursday, June 1 vs. Rochester RHP Jake Faria (5-1, 3.48) LHP Nik Turley (0-1, 3.38) 7:05 pm Friday, June 2 vs. Pawtucket RHP Brent Honeywell (3-5, 4.93) TBD 7:05 pm Saturday, June 3 vs. Pawtucket TBD TBD 6:35 pm Sunday, June 4 vs. Pawtucket LHP Ryan Yarbrough (3-3, 4.27) TBD 5:05 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
